Chapter 57
"Reputation is what others think of us; character is what God knows of us. When you have spent what feels like eternity trying to repair a few moments of time that destroyed the view others once had of you then you must ask yourself if you have the problem or is it really them? God doesn't make us try so hard, only enemies do."? Shannon L. Alder
There was once two houses. One house was on the sunny side of the street. It was brand spanking new, had a rose garden, a new car, and a furniture truck was pulling up bringing lots of new couches and beds. Life seems good. Across the street, the sun hardly ever shined through the windows. The house was brown and run down. There was an eviction notice on the door and the electric was shut off. The siding was coming off the house and the windows were drafty.Life seems dismal.
There were two women. One woman lived on the sunny side of the street. She had long blonde hair and blue eyes and a pretty smile. She had an easy way about her. Many people wanted to be her friend. The people didn't stay very long though only long enough to look at all of her possessions and then they were gone. The woman sat on her patio and gazed across the street. She wondered what it would be like to live over there for just one day.
The woman on the dark side of the street coughed. She wasn't feeling very well. She had this cough for over a month now. There wasn't any money for medicine but somehow she found a reason to smile. It was a beautiful day and the children were playing down the street. She loved the smell of autumn in the air. She looked across the street. She noticed that the rich woman didn't look very happy. She wondered why.
The woman on the sunny side of the street goes inside. She takes off her sunglasses to reveal a black eye. She wonders if anyone heard the terrible argument that occurred last night. She would feel shame if they did. How could she hold her head up if anyone knew the truth? How she envied the woman across the street. She always was smiling. She wondered why someone with nothing could be so happy about life. She wished she knew the secret. She wanted what she had. The woman on the dark side of the street felt sorry for the rich woman.Of course, she had money and friends, but something good was missing. Her eyes were empty. There was no glow to her cheeks. No life inside. Maybe she could help. She went inside and cut up some pie and made a
thermos of coffee. She walked across the street with her small token of friendship. The woman on the sunny side of the street was baffled. Why would she
want to visit me? What does she want? Money?
The woman came over and shook her hand. "I know we have been living across the street for ages, but I always wanted to meet you. I never
had the courage to come over until today." Hello, my name is Susan.. She smiled at her. She gave the rich woman the pie and coffee.
The rich woman wept. "You know many people visit me to just look at whatI have. Many people envy me and want to be like me. This is what I am really like." She took off her sunglasses to reveal her black eye.
"Oh my! You need a doctor now. Let me drive you there?"
"You would do that for me, a stranger?"
"Yes. Not a stranger anymore. A friend."
She took her hand and helped her in the car. Compassion check mated Envy and Friendship conquers Fear.
"It will be alright from now on. Open your heart. You never know what goes on across a tiny street. A friend is only a few feet away that can turn your life around.
"Let's see if we can take care of that cough."
Two women as different as day and night.
"Right after we call the police and make sure you are safe."
"Thanks for looking out for me."
"I just care. What is life without compassion?"
"Nothing except empty envy and jealousies."
The burden of Maravarman
Good people, normal people change when they are burdened with great expectations from those that surround them and their peers. Some succeed to a certain extent but many wilt like the flowers under the burning sun.Still some let these expectations change them and charge them with arrogance, intolerance and ego and then it becomes too late for them to get back to the very start and only a miracle or a major life-changing or sometimes life threatening experience can bring them to their senses.
Maravarman grew under his brother and king as a son and lived a carefree life as a prince does and the only thing that mattered to him was pleasing his brother kulashekara pandyan. But all that changed when the pride of the pandyan nation, the coronation hall was burnt down by kulothunga cholan and it also brought kulashekaran to his knees and reduced him to the state of a blabbering and paralysed infant.Seeing his king and brother thus brought the darkness into maravarman's soul and filled it with vengeance and he was now prepared to do anything to please and impress his brother.
This mindset led him to commit his first mistake of launching a sneak attack on the prison in thanjai where his minister and generals were held captive and that mistake lay the grounds for war and invasion by the chola king and it was a war the pandyans were not prepare for. With the situation thus they had escaped with their lives and now had managed to reach madurai by the grace of a mighty feat in which moorkan and rajendra cholan's war party had been annihilated.
Maravarman's thoughts were filled with gratitude and yet he envied those that had saved him and thenmozhi from certain death and was eager to meet and know more of these mighty warriors.
The noise of celebration reached maravarman and his group's ears long before they entered madurai.Flowers were strewn on the streets and people were celebrating as if it was harvest time. The excitement that ran through the pandyan citizens and that pulsed through madurai touched and echoed in maravrman and he was sure that the people who had killed moorkan and his army were assembled at the palace.
He urged his horse to go faster and reaching the palace jumped down questioning " where are they, where are the mighty warriors who brought pride back to our race?Bring them to em immediately for i want to see them and congratulate them and thank them."
The chief of the palace guard bowed " lord,i don't know what you are talking about for only thenmozhi, her father and our generals who had been held captive have returned safely.they all are right now in the presence of our king."
Maravarman did not know what to make of this news and decided that he would talk to thenmozhi and get all the information from her and rushed into the palace and into the king's chambers.
Thenmozhi lay her head on the king's chest and he gently stroked her head with his good hand and nikantan and the rest of the people stood watching them both.
Maravarman rushed in and was relieved to see thenmozhi unarmed and then touched kulashekaran's feet and paid his respects.
The king beckoned him close and fixed him with a burning glare and whispered " with whose permission did you launch the attack on the chola prison."
Maravarman stood with his head bent and for the first time in his life he had no answer to give and this reflected on his body and on his face for slowly the tears flowed and fell at his feet and stained the floor.
Kulashekaran " I have brought you up not just as my brother and son but i have groomed you as the future king and are these the actions befitting of a king."
It was just one question and it was enough and it broke maravarman and he collapsed to the ground in shame and guilt.Nikantan rushed to his side and consoled him.
Kulashekaran whispered " you not only put you and our men in danger but this child who consider a part of my soul in mortal peril. This is the first time you have erred and have done a mistake and so for that i will forgive you.But until further orders you will remain in your chambers and if you dare venture out without my knowledge then i will throw you in prison.Do you understand ?"
Maravarman gently nodded nd kulashekaran turned to thenmozhi " My child, you are my very eyes and all of my senses.I held on to my life just to hear the news that you are alive and safe.I did not even worry about maravarman but i was worried sick about you.Come now, tell me what is happening and all that has happened.I am a king in name only but in reality i am an old man,a cripple and a burden.I think everyone is waiting for me to die so that they can get on with their lives rather than being reminded that they are ruled by a broken king.Nobody tells me anything.so tell me what happened for everyone is talking about a mighty war and a mighty warrior.who is this hero ?i want to see him and thank him."
Thenmozhi wiped her tears " You know this hero and mighty warrior for he was the one who sent you the message through the old man appanar iyya and also gave you that pearl necklace.he is the very same boy whom you dreamnt coming from the light and the one who raised you from the darkness you were in."
Kulashekaran's face mirrored the expressions of their court dancer for shock, happiness, suspicion, gratitude and so much more ran one after another " please tell me exactly what happened and don't leave even one bit of information for i want to know everything."
Thenmozhi slowly explained the whole tale and as she kept telling what had happened maravarman absorbed and slowly realised that the boy who had bowed to him was the mighty warrior and he froze in shock and in fear.
Thenmozhi whispered " his name is Azhagan and he comes from our village perumalvaram."
Kulashekaran's body trembled in excitement and happiness " azhagan, perumalvaram.yes how befitting for it must have been perumal himself who disguised himself as a boy and came to our rescue.I knew the first time i met him that there was something special about him and i have been proved right.I have to meet him and thank him personally."
Kulashekaran called for the palace security chief " take a few of our ministers and go to the village of perumalvaram and deliver the message to azhagan that i want to see him.Carry gold, silk, food grains and a hundred cows and place it at his feet and tell him that they are gifts from me to him and his village.Inform the village head that from this day forth and as long as there is a pandyan ruler, they do not have to pay taxes to the king and it will be the king who will pay them taxes.Go now and carry my official seal with you."
The seeds of darkness and vengeance have been sown and two destinies, that of a prince and a young village boy will collide in love, hate and war.But only you and me know that the boy azhagan is also a prince and his father a mighty king stands hidden in the lights of the forest.
I am azhagan.I am the son of avini and i remain in the light.
