Crimes against children are the worst kind and those that commit them should not be spared or let off lightly. Those that are found guilty should be punished so severely that they will serve as an examples and be a deterrent to those who think of such deranged acts.

Nearly one lakh children go missing and half of them have been found raped, molested but half of the missing have not been heard of again.

Something is going on,something terrible is happening right under our noses,in our homes,in our cities and yet we ignore, turn a blind eye and get on with life.

Kesavan 35,from a lower middle class iyer family works as a cashier and accountant in a small private company in broadway. His only daughter meena aged 7 went missing on her way back from school. It has been 10 years and time and everyone has moved on but for kesavan. He goes to the local police station every week to find out if there is any development in the case of his missing daughter. In the ten years three inspectors have come and gone and today would be no different thought kesavan as he waited outside the new inspectors cabin.

But the minute kesavan sits opposite the new inspector Rudran, his hopes of finding out what happened to his daughter rise just a bit.For the man who sits opposite him does not look or talk like an ordinary inspector but one who is kind and understanding.

Kesavan looks into the man's eyes and knows that something was different about this inspector.

There are hardened criminals who prey on the weak, innocent and children and then there are harder and more violent men who are set upon them to hunt and kill and no questions are asked.Yes they are as violent as the criminals but the biggest difference is that they come from the light and carry righteous anger and will mete out justice when and as it is required.

But unknown to all and known to very few is that inspector rudran reports directly to the police commissioner and that he is from the special branch of CID and has been placed in the station for a specific reason. His army records have been placed in secret files and only a select few in the country have access to it.

So with these new characters i will start the next story after i have finished with The boy who went into the dark and came back with light.

The voices of those missing are heard by rudran and they cry out for him to help them and he will walk one step at a time towards them and by the time he is done the path of destruction will lead to some of the holiest men and will lead to the spider who sits in the center of the web.

As always the men who stand in the light will battle the men who scurry in the dark and conduct their business in the underbelly of the city.

They go missing and are never seen or heard about
Everyday someone's son or daughter goes missing
It is just not missing but evil that has walked hand in hand as we have evolved
Unspeakable crimes and misery are experienced by children
before they are drowned, buried, burnt and dissolved in chemicals
Their bodies are gone but wait only their bodies have gone
their souls still linger and they are screaming in pain
they cry out for someone to notice and they cry for help in fear
who will sing for them, who will search for them
so they wait lost in the dark for their saviour
they wait helplessly and hopelessly for a god,a real god
to come alive and bring them out from the hell they are trapped in

Chapter 56

"Class is an aura of confidence that is being sure without being cocky. Class has nothing to do with money. Class never runs scared. It is self-discipline and self-knowledge. It's the sure-footedness that comes with having proved you can meet life. "? Ann Landers

Offlate, say for the past 5 to 6 years talking to customer care people who help you with your mobile problems, banking,Dth services has become a pain and always leaves me frustrated and in wonder.Whether you call or if they call, you invariably find yourself talking to a person whose english skills are bad and when you politely ask them if it is okay to talk in tamil, very few switch to tamil and most assault you with their english diction " i walk english,I talk english,i kill english and i will molest you with my english." Once i tried booking a cab using fast track taxi service and i swear the girl was talking to me in mandarin or cantonese and only after a few minutes did i realise i was the guinea pig for her english classes.well i just about managed to book the cab and yet next day i called up once more and confirmed the booking.

Trying to learn, trying to teach yourself and better yourself is all very good but in a society where time is off the utmost importance one cannot and should not waste others time and energy.I allude to the above experiences of mine and cite it as an example for the most important virtue and that is accept when you have lost and when you are in the wrong and go ahead with the one who is right rather than burn yourself and the world in shame, jealousy and revenge.

Two worlds collide

The two small groups, one with maravarman and the other one consisting of his personal guard fled with the chola army not far behind them but at one point they came together again and maravarman decided that he would go back for thenmozhi and try to save her.So he turned back and led the chola army on a wild goose chase and making a complete u-turn came back to where he had left thenmozhi.

The clearing where azhagan had killed moorkan and the rest of the chola army was filled with all sorts of birds, jackals and wild dogs and they were happily feeding on the dead.Hearing the horses coming towards them, the scavengers took to the sky and the others fled into the safety of the jungle and waited for the intruders to pass,so they could continue with their meal.

Seeing all the bodies lying dead, maravarman nearly fainted in shock for he thought the worse had happened and thenmozhi had been killed along with her father and the rest of their men. With a heavy heart,he requested some of his men to see if they could find the remains of thenmozhi and the others.

One of his generals came towards him " lord, there seems to be no remains of either thenmozhi or any of our people. All those who lie dead belong to the chola army and there is something else that you need to see.for you will not believe my words but you might trust that your eyes are not cheating you."

His curiosity aroused, maravarman went with the general to the middle of the clearing and saw the headless body of moorkan and a little distance away lay his head, frozen with an expression of fear and shock.

Maravarman was stunned " but this is the head and torso of moorkan the giant.Yet here he lies dead, ripped in two pieces.how is this possible and who could have felled this giant in this way.Who is this person who is so strong that he has slayed a legend,a villain whose might is known all over our lands."

A soldier hurried to maravarman's side " lord, there are two sets of tracks leaving this clearing and one is headed towards madurai and the others lead to gangaikondacholapuram. But the tracks leading to madurai have been made by a very small group of people and the other tracks by a small army.i think thenmozhi and the rest were rescued and have fled this way.but this is where it gets confusing for there are no tracks of soldiers chasing or following them but for one set of footprints who is following them very carefully."

Maravarman screamed to his men and asked them to follow the tracks leading to madurai and they raced on the path left by thenmozhi and azhagan.

About half an hour later the other two teams of the chola army with their own trackers came to the clearing and were stunned to see their soldiers dead and dying.but the greatest shock to them was seeing the body and head of moorkan.

One thought echoed in everyone's mind " if someone as mighty and invincible as moorkan could be killed and torn to pieces then who among them could challenge this person or the people who did this awesome feat."

All those that stood there understood and realised that something strange and beyond their senses had taken place and when the other trackers told them that a few survivors along with rajendra cholan had returned to gangaikondacholapuram, they jumped in joy and relief and decided to follow their prince back to their capital.

The trackers realised it was the prince rajendra cholan by the hoofmarks that his horse left behind (spain, that bit of explanation was for you)

Maravarman and his group of soldiers followed the tracks that thenmozhi and her small group of people had left and in the forest the way to follow people who have crossed that place is to see broken twigs or broken branches of low lying trees and dung which has been dropped by horses and thread or pieces of cloth caught on thorns. But the birds of the forest and the monkeys are sure guides for they raise a hue and cry when humans or large predators pass beneath them. One has to worry about danger only when the forest goes strangely quiet and there are no noises in the air.

Maravarman and his group slowed to a crawl when in the distance they caught sight of a lone man who stood right in the tracks left by thenmozhi and their people.

As they got closer they saw it was just a young man who stood casually leaning on a stick as if he was expecting them to show up.

Seeing maravarman the young man bowed his head " greetings my lord."

Maravarman jumped down from his horse and his eyes scanned the forest for other people who might attack them and the stranger " there is no one here but me my prince. Now that you are here i guess my job is done and i can leave. Will you please tell thenmozhi and nikantan that i have to return to my village to see my mother and will come to madurai soon."

Marvarman wondered how he knew thenmzohi " who are you young man ? I feel as if we have met before and yet i cannot recollect where.but most importantly i want to know how thenmozhi and the rest of our people are doing. We passed the place where a great battle had taken place and the mighty moorkan lay dead along with scores of chola soldiers.Could you please tell us who the mighty warriors were who launched this fantastic attack and slaughtered the cholas.i want to thank each one of them personally."

Azhagan smiled casually " oh that battle.Silly fools, they were warned and yet they fought and now lie in the sun as food for the forest dwellers. And that mighty moorkan,i have no idea how he lasted this long and why someone did not kill him earlier than this."

Maravarman irritated and thoroughly frustrated by this young man talking so casually about the mighty cholas raised his voice " boy,do you know who moorkan was and how many people he had killed with his bare hands.don't shoot off your mouth about things you have no clue about for these are matters for adults and not for children like you."

Azhagan sighed and bowing again left quietly with a gentle smile on his lips.

Maravarman stood watching him disappear into the forest when one of his men came close to him " lord, don't you recognise that boy.Remember many years ago we came upon an old man and a young child with him on our way back from the chera kingdom.I am sure it is the same boy who has now grown up into man."

Maravarman frowned and tried to recollect that incident and then asked the general how he had happened to recognise the boy and the general said " i remember those markings on his left forearm but most importantly i remember those eyes and will never forget it."

Then the blood in their bodies chilled in fear as they heard the loud roars of a male lion and they all decided that it was better to move on and follow thenmozhi and the rest of their group and soon they entered the safety of their pandyan land.

The long grass parted and the huge black maned lion stepped out and watched as maravarman left in search of thenmozhi and was soon joined by azhagan who scratched the lions ears and both stood watching as the future king rode away.

Azhagan whispered '" come buddha, let us go see mother. My heart aches for her love and touch."

The spirits stood quietly shrouded in darkness and the king whispered " so much power.i am truly scared now for my son even takes one step into the darkness then all will be lost and even all of us,mighty as we are will not be able to match him or beat him.We just have to hope and pray that the source knows what it is doing, for the source is never wrong."

Even though azhagan was nearly a 100ms away from them he quickly felt the presence of someone or something and he closed his eyes and let his senses travel around and at one point he felt he had touched something but was not sure what it was and continued on his journey.

The king sighed " see how strong he has become.he nearly caught us there with his senses.we have to be more careful and hide ourselves better."

your next story that deals with child trafficking sounds very interesting too.

Uttama villain

"We are all ordinary. We are all boring. We are all spectacular. We are all shy. We are all bold. We are all heroes. We are all helpless. It just depends on the day."
Brad Meltzer

There are certain things that are very sacred and sacrosanct in life and when it comes to the topic of films,Kamal hassan the actor is one such thing. A multiple national award winner and a national award winner for his first film kalathoor kannamma, though it was a special jury award in recognition for his performance regardless, then speaks for itself the man's calibre and talents.A performer, entertainer who did not just rest on his acting skills and took on other avatars, such as director, producer, story writer, screenplay and dialogues. It is the unanimous opinion of all those who are in the business of movies that the man eats, drinks and breathes movies.

For the past 45 years,the man has strode like a giant across indian cinema,leaving behind a trail of masterclass perfomances in films like avargal,16 vaiyadhinile,Meendum Kokila,Raja Paarvai,Vazhvey Maayam,Moondram Pirai,Sagara Sangamam,Saagar,Punnagai Mannan,Nayakan,Sathya,Apoorva Sagodharargal,Michael Madana Kama Rajan,Thevar Magan,Guna,Mahanadhi,Subha Sankalpam,Sathi Leelavathi,Indian,Kuruthipunal,Avvai Shanmugi,Anbe Sivam,Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu.

Such is the legacy of the man, that any good performance by an actor from the current generation is compared to what kamal hassan has done and most cannot compare to the master. From dancing skills, fighting and action scenes, comedy, romancing heroines the man succeeds in trying to rise above the trends and norms of the industry.

I have sat and cried while watching his performances in films such as Vazhvey Maayam,Moondram Pirai and Sagara Sangamam.

But nowadays he makes me cry in frustration with bullshit movies such as vishwaroopam and dasavatharam.

I saw uttama villain and the first thing that struck me was how fat and overweight he looked. The flesh hanging from his cheeks and jowls were sad and do not belong in an actor of his calibre. Those pointless kissing and romantic scenes with andrea had me cringing for they looked so forced, stale and cliched.
I guess you might think that finding faults is easy and doing the job is lot tougher but i guess time and tide wait for no one and not even kamal hassan.

My biggest complaint is how tedious it is to watch this film for it jumps through real and reel portions and unlike others i did not have any problems following the characters of manoranjan and uttaman. My problem lies in the yawnnn and sleep inducing scenes of the film shot inside the film and how boring they were. The particular scenes are saved again and again by the master actor and in the end it just is that,a showcase for an aging actor. We see the same expressions that we have seen in the last thirty to forty years and in better films, the same comedy and fun with words and misunderstanding situations which started with Michael Madana Kama Rajan and then it strikes you and what strikes you is this " god,i am so bored and i can't take this crap anymore."

From moving us to cry with his amazing performances to now making us cry with frustration kamal hassan has come a full circle. We expect more, new and a healthier looking kamal hassan and not those silly kisses and romantic scenes that proves he is still virile and manly or cry baby expressions that worked before jesus christ came to earth.

I last enjoyed kamal hassan in Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu where he kept everything under check and in tight control.Times change, new trends have come and people's expectations have risen more and more and there is nothing anyone can do with it.

Change, adapt, renew, recreate and rise again and again for each film.

This review is my opinion and if anyone is offended by it,then i am sorry.I remain in awe of kamal hassan of the 70's,80's and 90's and that is that.

Nice trailer, Satish.
Looks promising...
Unfortunately, I don't understand Malayalam...but it sounds like your role is crucial to the story.
Wishing you all the very best for it!
I liked your review on "Uttama Villain".
I walked out of the movie half-way through...found it very boring and very painful to watch.
But I liked Parvathy Nair's role in the very little I saw of this movie.
I got to see "Kaaka Muttai" yesterday...
and I felt it was the best Tamil movie I've seen this year so far.
It is not condescending (like "Slumdog Millionaire"), it is not preachy (like "36 Vayadhinile") and it is not a documentary kind of film.
It's about two slum kids (a self-respected elder brother - periya kaaka muttai and his kutty thambi - chinna kaaka muttai) who ache and work hard for their first taste of pizza - and it is told with light-hearted humour.
They need money and good clothes to walk into a pizza shop and order a Rs. 300 pizza...
but living in the slum area, they decide they will not beg nor steal to get the money.
It is childhood re-visited for many in the audience...
because it is a simple tale told in a very simple way.
I adored the little kid who acts as "chinna kaaka muttai" - he is playfully naughty and happy - without realizing or worrying about how cruel the outside world is to poor kids.
He is delightfully happy in his own little world as "chinna kaaka muttai".
It is a lesson for many adults.
The lady who plays the slum mother to the 2 kids - 25 year old Iyshwarya Rajesh - looks very dignified and restrained as a responsible young mum.
She cannot afford to wear good saris, her husband is in jail, she needs money to get him out of bail, so she cuts down on the school fees and stops sending her kids to school.
The klittle kid asks her to buy a tv...she tells him when he stops wetting the bed at night, she will do so.
The kid tries really, really hard to control his bladder, but he can't!😆
When he wakes up one morning to find himself dry, he is jumping with joy to his mum that he's a grown-up man now - and it's time to buy him a tv!
Such simple joys of life...
It's great to know such good films come from Tamil cinema...
I wish it was screened in the Cannes film festival...
even Aishwarya Rai's red carpet gowns pale in comparison to this natural beauty.

Hi spain

Kaaka muttai deserves all the attention, praises and awards it is garnering for the simple reason that it is a testament to the fact that good cinema does not have to be boring or be branded as the so called art cinema. There was a time when art cinema and good cinema meant scripts where a man will smoke beedis, scratch and stare vacantly.ok.i will stop bitching but damn it,i was tortured by these films every sunday morning when i was growing up and five minute into these films i used to have bowel movements and these films were and are surely the best medicines for people who suffer from insomnia

It shows that any story from any setting can be told beautifully and that we dont have to be moved or forced to cry like babies while our guilt works overtime on seeing poor people and their sufferings.

It proves that even among the formula films such as ettu paatu, pattu sandai, anju double meaning comedy scenes and 2 thoppula omelette scenes not withstanding good cinema told in a light hearted manner can triumph and be time well spent in the theater.

Now all the scavengers will run for scripts with similar tones and the next few years you will so many similar films until a new trend arrives.

Thank you for the review.be well.

Chapter 57

"Reputation is what others think of us; character is what God knows of us. When you have spent what feels like eternity trying to repair a few moments of time that destroyed the view others once had of you then you must ask yourself if you have the problem or is it really them? God doesn't make us try so hard, only enemies do."? Shannon L. Alder

There was once two houses. One house was on the sunny side of the street. It was brand spanking new, had a rose garden, a new car, and a furniture truck was pulling up bringing lots of new couches and beds. Life seems good. Across the street, the sun hardly ever shined through the windows. The house was brown and run down. There was an eviction notice on the door and the electric was shut off. The siding was coming off the house and the windows were drafty.Life seems dismal.
There were two women. One woman lived on the sunny side of the street. She had long blonde hair and blue eyes and a pretty smile. She had an easy way about her. Many people wanted to be her friend. The people didn't stay very long though only long enough to look at all of her possessions and then they were gone. The woman sat on her patio and gazed across the street. She wondered what it would be like to live over there for just one day.
The woman on the dark side of the street coughed. She wasn't feeling very well. She had this cough for over a month now. There wasn't any money for medicine but somehow she found a reason to smile. It was a beautiful day and the children were playing down the street. She loved the smell of autumn in the air. She looked across the street. She noticed that the rich woman didn't look very happy. She wondered why.

The woman on the sunny side of the street goes inside. She takes off her sunglasses to reveal a black eye. She wonders if anyone heard the terrible argument that occurred last night. She would feel shame if they did. How could she hold her head up if anyone knew the truth? How she envied the woman across the street. She always was smiling. She wondered why someone with nothing could be so happy about life. She wished she knew the secret. She wanted what she had. The woman on the dark side of the street felt sorry for the rich woman.Of course, she had money and friends, but something good was missing. Her eyes were empty. There was no glow to her cheeks. No life inside. Maybe she could help. She went inside and cut up some pie and made a
thermos of coffee. She walked across the street with her small token of friendship. The woman on the sunny side of the street was baffled. Why would she
want to visit me? What does she want? Money?

The woman came over and shook her hand. "I know we have been living across the street for ages, but I always wanted to meet you. I never
had the courage to come over until today." Hello, my name is Susan.. She smiled at her. She gave the rich woman the pie and coffee.
The rich woman wept. "You know many people visit me to just look at whatI have. Many people envy me and want to be like me. This is what I am really like." She took off her sunglasses to reveal her black eye.

"Oh my! You need a doctor now. Let me drive you there?"

"You would do that for me, a stranger?"

"Yes. Not a stranger anymore. A friend."

She took her hand and helped her in the car. Compassion check mated Envy and Friendship conquers Fear.

"It will be alright from now on. Open your heart. You never know what goes on across a tiny street. A friend is only a few feet away that can turn your life around.

"Let's see if we can take care of that cough."

Two women as different as day and night.

"Right after we call the police and make sure you are safe."

"Thanks for looking out for me."

"I just care. What is life without compassion?"

"Nothing except empty envy and jealousies."

The burden of Maravarman

Good people, normal people change when they are burdened with great expectations from those that surround them and their peers. Some succeed to a certain extent but many wilt like the flowers under the burning sun.Still some let these expectations change them and charge them with arrogance, intolerance and ego and then it becomes too late for them to get back to the very start and only a miracle or a major life-changing or sometimes life threatening experience can bring them to their senses.

Maravarman grew under his brother and king as a son and lived a carefree life as a prince does and the only thing that mattered to him was pleasing his brother kulashekara pandyan. But all that changed when the pride of the pandyan nation, the coronation hall was burnt down by kulothunga cholan and it also brought kulashekaran to his knees and reduced him to the state of a blabbering and paralysed infant.Seeing his king and brother thus brought the darkness into maravarman's soul and filled it with vengeance and he was now prepared to do anything to please and impress his brother.

This mindset led him to commit his first mistake of launching a sneak attack on the prison in thanjai where his minister and generals were held captive and that mistake lay the grounds for war and invasion by the chola king and it was a war the pandyans were not prepare for. With the situation thus they had escaped with their lives and now had managed to reach madurai by the grace of a mighty feat in which moorkan and rajendra cholan's war party had been annihilated.

Maravarman's thoughts were filled with gratitude and yet he envied those that had saved him and thenmozhi from certain death and was eager to meet and know more of these mighty warriors.

The noise of celebration reached maravarman and his group's ears long before they entered madurai.Flowers were strewn on the streets and people were celebrating as if it was harvest time. The excitement that ran through the pandyan citizens and that pulsed through madurai touched and echoed in maravrman and he was sure that the people who had killed moorkan and his army were assembled at the palace.

He urged his horse to go faster and reaching the palace jumped down questioning " where are they, where are the mighty warriors who brought pride back to our race?Bring them to em immediately for i want to see them and congratulate them and thank them."

The chief of the palace guard bowed " lord,i don't know what you are talking about for only thenmozhi, her father and our generals who had been held captive have returned safely.they all are right now in the presence of our king."

Maravarman did not know what to make of this news and decided that he would talk to thenmozhi and get all the information from her and rushed into the palace and into the king's chambers.

Thenmozhi lay her head on the king's chest and he gently stroked her head with his good hand and nikantan and the rest of the people stood watching them both.

Maravarman rushed in and was relieved to see thenmozhi unarmed and then touched kulashekaran's feet and paid his respects.

The king beckoned him close and fixed him with a burning glare and whispered " with whose permission did you launch the attack on the chola prison."

Maravarman stood with his head bent and for the first time in his life he had no answer to give and this reflected on his body and on his face for slowly the tears flowed and fell at his feet and stained the floor.

Kulashekaran " I have brought you up not just as my brother and son but i have groomed you as the future king and are these the actions befitting of a king."

It was just one question and it was enough and it broke maravarman and he collapsed to the ground in shame and guilt.Nikantan rushed to his side and consoled him.

Kulashekaran whispered " you not only put you and our men in danger but this child who consider a part of my soul in mortal peril. This is the first time you have erred and have done a mistake and so for that i will forgive you.But until further orders you will remain in your chambers and if you dare venture out without my knowledge then i will throw you in prison.Do you understand ?"

Maravarman gently nodded nd kulashekaran turned to thenmozhi " My child, you are my very eyes and all of my senses.I held on to my life just to hear the news that you are alive and safe.I did not even worry about maravarman but i was worried sick about you.Come now, tell me what is happening and all that has happened.I am a king in name only but in reality i am an old man,a cripple and a burden.I think everyone is waiting for me to die so that they can get on with their lives rather than being reminded that they are ruled by a broken king.Nobody tells me anything.so tell me what happened for everyone is talking about a mighty war and a mighty warrior.who is this hero ?i want to see him and thank him."

Thenmozhi wiped her tears " You know this hero and mighty warrior for he was the one who sent you the message through the old man appanar iyya and also gave you that pearl necklace.he is the very same boy whom you dreamnt coming from the light and the one who raised you from the darkness you were in."

Kulashekaran's face mirrored the expressions of their court dancer for shock, happiness, suspicion, gratitude and so much more ran one after another " please tell me exactly what happened and don't leave even one bit of information for i want to know everything."

Thenmozhi slowly explained the whole tale and as she kept telling what had happened maravarman absorbed and slowly realised that the boy who had bowed to him was the mighty warrior and he froze in shock and in fear.

Thenmozhi whispered " his name is Azhagan and he comes from our village perumalvaram."

Kulashekaran's body trembled in excitement and happiness " azhagan, perumalvaram.yes how befitting for it must have been perumal himself who disguised himself as a boy and came to our rescue.I knew the first time i met him that there was something special about him and i have been proved right.I have to meet him and thank him personally."

Kulashekaran called for the palace security chief " take a few of our ministers and go to the village of perumalvaram and deliver the message to azhagan that i want to see him.Carry gold, silk, food grains and a hundred cows and place it at his feet and tell him that they are gifts from me to him and his village.Inform the village head that from this day forth and as long as there is a pandyan ruler, they do not have to pay taxes to the king and it will be the king who will pay them taxes.Go now and carry my official seal with you."

The seeds of darkness and vengeance have been sown and two destinies, that of a prince and a young village boy will collide in love, hate and war.But only you and me know that the boy azhagan is also a prince and his father a mighty king stands hidden in the lights of the forest.

I am azhagan.I am the son of avini and i remain in the light.
