Chapter 9
"Winners were not born winners; they learnt and practiced how to win and they have it! Everyone who gives a great testimony about his/her life begins with a beginning that was "inadequate" until something happened... an a breakthrough became evident!"? Israelmore Ayivor
Sometime in 1929,edwin hubble peering through his large telescope, discovered that all the galaxies in the universe were moving away at great speed from one another and then after calculations were made it was found that all matter originated from a single point of origin, the big bang.Galaxies, stars, planets and time itself started at this one point about 13 billion years ago.so the universe has a beginning although the end is not in sight.Going back, back into time scientists now know a lot about how the universe started and are slowly retracing the growth of the universe and have come close to about 300 million years after the big bang.
UNRAVELING
"There is always a pleasure in unraveling a mystery, in catching at the gossamer clue which will guide to certainty."? Elizabeth Gaskell, Mary Barton
Priya sat in her parked car staring at students coming and going out of loyola college campus. She was here to meet Mr.peter muthukumar, the person who was handling the alumni association and its day to day affairs. She took a sip of water from the bottle and rewound the past weeks happenings and how well the anniversary celebration had taken place. Her boss chandrashekar had flown back with the I&B minister to follow up talks regarding a hindi edition of their national paper and would not be back for a few days.Chandru had called priya and briefly told her to start from the beginning and trace her steps carefully without leaving any detail. So that in case they were questioned, they could safely say that they were doing an article about their now world famous chief minister and were trying to bring to the public his past glory and achievements.
Priya's mobile hummed her favourite song "Akkam pakkam yaarum illla bhoologam vendum" from her favourite actors film kireedam and she answered it.It was peter muthukumar and he apologised for the delay and asked her to come to the alumni chambers behind the college.Priya said okay and walked towards the alumni and she smiled to herself when whistles and catcalls were made as she swept past a group of students.
Mr.peter muthukumar was waiting for her near the entrance and said "good morning" and priya smiled a greeting.Peter led her into his office complaining to her that traffic was getting worse day by day and that he found it really difficult to ride his bike to reach the college from his house near poonamallee.Seeing her expression,he said " with the salary i am getting paid a house on the outskirts of the city is my only solution for rentals are more affordable there. He called the office boy and requested him to get two cups of tea and a plate of vadais.Hearing priya protest, peter "take a bite and i will bet that you will finish the rest in a second. For our canteen is famous for its cook who makes the best vadai in the whole of chennai."Then he looked at her and said well off late our college seems to be more famous for its chief minister than its high standard and heritage.Everyday i get calls asking for any info i can give or any new light i can shed about dhana.oh, dhana is how i and the rest of us know him and are still supposed to call him, although we do that only in private."
Priya spent nearly an hour talking to muthukumar and like he had predicted did finish the plate of vadais and then seeing how much she had enjoyed them parceled a few for her to takeaway.Just as priya was getting up to leave muthu said " priya,i know i have not been of much help but then i just handle this association and moreover dhana came a few years after i passed out and was in the gulf working. But there are two people who might be able to help you better and that is the watchman samuel aiyasaamy and our cook vaidyanathan. Both have been working here for more than thirty years and dhana was their favourite student.
Priya sat with samuel in his small cottage which was located at the far end of the college campus and spoke to him about dhanashekar pandiyan. The canteen cook, vaidyanathan was busy and told her he would meet her after lunchtime was over and he would be free to talk to her without any disturbance.Samuel aiyasaamy coughed heavily and "amma, its been five years since i gave up smoking, but looks like the effects will not let go so easily."Priya concerned for his health "i can come back another day, when you are feeling better." samuel looked at her "no,today is okay for i am not sure how much longer this lung cancer is going to let me live.anyway the doctors have told me i have a few months left. The management knows about my condition and have granted my request to go in peace right where i have lived my life for nearly 65 years.I came here as an orphan and i was just 8 years old and father john who was the then chemistry lecturer kind of adopted me and let me stay here.God bless his soul for he has been gone for nearly 20 years.Sorry, knowledge that i am going to go soon is bringing back memories and i have been lucky for my life here has been filled with only good and happy memories."
Priya smiled at this gentle and brave man and wondered when her time came, would she go with this much dignity.Samuel drank a glass of water and spoke about dhana."Dhanashekar pandiyan was an extraordinary human being and in my time here i have yet to see anyone as good as him.for he was great in sports, great in his studies and much more than that when it came to helping people and being there for them.i have to really strain to think of one incident where i saw him angry or violent or when he got into a fight with anybody else.Even during the college elections when arjun confronted him, dhana remained calm and restrained his best friend balaji from attacking arjun. Many students witnessed what happened and everyone there knew that if dhana had wanted he could have knocked down arjun in a second, but didnt." Priya "samuel sir, could you please elaborate on why arjun attacked dhanashekar.was it because of the elections or just plain jealousy."
Samuel squinted and frowning tried to recollect what happened. He said " i am not sure why he attacked dhana but he was going through a tough time for there was a death in his family,i think it was his sister.Rumors were that dhana's best friend balaji was going steady with her but due to some misunderstanding broke off with her and that girl committed suicide.I am sorry for all this happened some time ago and i am not able to recollect the exact details.Maybe if you contact other batch mates of dhana, you might get some more information." the little bit of talking took a toll and he started coughing violently.Deciding that he needed to rest, priya thanked him and tried to offer him some money which samuel refused saying he had everything that he needed and money was of no use to him.Priya took leave and rather than waiting to meet the canteen cook vaidyanathan decided that she would come back after a few days for she wanted to follow this new information which samuel had given her.Her mobile rang and priya said hello and the mysterious voice spoke " you are on the right track but it is not a game anymore for you need to really watch your back." and once again before priya could ask who he was the call was disconnected leaving priya wondering if she was being led on a wild goose chase.
The dinosaurs lived about 250 million years ago and yet we know a lot about them.Like i alluded in the beginning, everything leaves a trace,a track, a note for someone to follow and tell their story.one has to just pick up the scent and follow the trail and soon the story is unraveled by following a single thread.yes, all it takes the right string to be pulled at the right time and soon the material is threadbare. But when a cupboard full of skeletons is opened and they all tumble out,how does one know or choose which skeleton's story you are going to follow.and most importantly what if you become one of those skeletons.
If you can't get rid of the skeleton in your closet, you'd best teach it to dance.------------George Bernard Shaw
