CHAPTER 8
Whoever you are, holding me now in hand,
Without one thing, all will be useless,
I give you fair warning, before you attempt me further,
I am not what you supposed, but far different.

There are some who although exist in the light live in the dark,darkness of their mind and soul.They carry a heavy burden of knowledge that they are different and learn to accept it.They don't show much emotion and stay in the dark and cry in the dark.They prefer to remain there to protect the rest from the sorrow they carry and the burdens they might unleash.They know that being different means you live outside the tribe and far away from fellow people.they know that they are pariahs and outcasts deemed to be ridiculed and laughed at.But they know,understand and bear it all for they realise that the rest of the world is important and that the rest of the world need not know or try to understand their depths of darkness.
Even together we are alone
Mani looked at shalini and smiled gently.It was a smile from the soul where he had locked her away and it burst forth like a gentle spring.It was a smile that reached his eyes and that glow covered his whole body with an aura for it was innocent and pure to its core.Shalini saw the smile,felt the smile and it brought tears to her eyes for she knew she then that mani was special and that she had been correct to have held him in her mind for so long.Without even realising it her hand reached out across the table and held his hand.Mani who had been looking at her all this while,felt the touch of her fingers and for the first time felt his spirit move in ways he had not known it could move.This spontaneous contact by shalini was not just that but it everything that needed to be said and unsaid.For mani it was a touch on the physical level and yet it transcended into something that had been an ache and an emotion that had been haunting all his life.This simple and yet loving touch by shalini reminded him of his loneliness and how much he needed to belong,to be loved and love in return.Not knowing how to react mani gently removed his hand and looking at shalini asked how she was and what she was doing here in this building.
Shalini replied i work here on the 29th floor for Apricot business solutions.And then she asked him what he was doing here and he shyly smiled and with a smirk said " so do i".Shalini looked at him and said " surely you are not joking.I work here and you work here and yet we have never met.".Then with concern she asked him how he had hurt his forehead and mani said " well it was a silly accident which took place yesterday near the elevators.Shocked shalini said "wait a minute.That guy who got pushed and who fell to the ground,it was you.Mani nodded yes and asked her how she knew about something which had happened to him.shalini replied that she had seen the whole thing taking place and had felt guilty that she could not be of any help.Then shalini looked at mani and asked him if she knew that the guy who had pushed him to the ground had killed himself the previous morning.Mani smiled gently and said " well the man must have really felt guilty for what he had done and probably killed himself out of shame".for a second they both looked at each other and burst out laughing.
Mani than asked shalini if she was in a hurry and if not then they could have a coffee together.Shalini said yes and mani went off to the counter to pick up their coffees.Shalini looked at him go and sighed deeply.And then things got cold rapidly and a sense of dread smothered shalini.she felt the same way she had felt the previous night on the 20th floor.Mani who was standing near the counter happened to turn towards her and seeing shalini's reactions and expressions immediately knew that something was terribly wrong.He rushed back to their corner table and shalini with fear in her eyes just stood up and mani knew what was wrong.Without a seconds thought he threw his arms around her and gently said it was okay.shalini was shivering in cold and fright and just like that the air got warmer again.taking a deep breath mani asked shalini to wait near the elevator while he paid for the coffees.Nodding her head she said ok and left.Mani watched her leave and then looked around to see if anybody had seen what had happened.But thankfully the restaurant was empty since everybody had left to their offices and the remaining people were deep in their lap tops and i phones.
Mani sat down and taking a deep breath he whispered " did you do that "." did you just scare my friend whom i havent seen in so many years".She stood next to him and said yes.Mani looked at her and asked her why she had done that.She stared back and simply said " i am here to protect you".mani asked " protect me from what ".She replied " from everything that can hurt you or want to hurt you.it is my duty to protect my child ".mani placed his head in his hands and let out a sigh and then gently looked up at her and asked her if she would listen to what he had to say.She nodded.Mani said " i am old enough to protect myself and old enough to know whom to trust and not to trust and i dont need you to worry about those things.She looked at him and said " you might think that but you dont know how cruel this world is and how mean they are.you of all people should know that for you have experienced so much sufferings just because you dont fight back.i am here for you and i will fight back and will not remain quiet when they mean harm to you".
Mani was by now quite angry and he felt more anger than he had ever felt in his life.He looked at her and said " shalini is my friend and i dont want you disturbing her or scaring her anymore".She looked at him and whispered okay and left.slowly mani got up tired in his mind but relieved that nothing untoward had happened.He walked up to the elevator where shalini was waiting and asked her is she was okay.Shalini did not know what to say but since she had no idea what she had experienced she shook her head and said " that was weird and that too the second time.Maybe i need to go see a doctor and get a check up done as to why i am getting these chills ".
Mani looked at her and said what do you mean the second time.Shalini said " well yesterday evening as i was leaving my office,out of curiosity i went down to 20th floor to see the place where the man had jumped to his death".mani shocked asked her " was that woman you ".shalini asked him how he knew and mani replied it was him standing there in the dark feeling bad for the man who had killed himself.They both looked at each other and did not know how to react or what to say.Mani told shalini that he would walk the four floors down to his office and gently saying bye left.shalini watched him go and feeling happiness,confusion and a bit of unease got on to the elevator and went up to her offices.
The most beautiful kiss is one you have never had.the most beautiful love is one that you pine for and is like a nail in your soul.Love is so mysterious and tragic for the one who can put a smile in your face,for the one who can give you wings to fly can also break you and leave you lying in the dust.Yet we fight for thsi love,acceptance from the one we love.we are willing to suffer for the ones we love.How is this possible and why is this possible.mother nature in her evolution has this trick up her sleeve to bind us and so bound we go on and on.and these ties that bind apply for both the living and the undead.
