Actor Sahil Khan has filed for divorce from his Norwegian wife, Negar Khan. Sahil married Negar on September 21, 2004.

When Indian authorities deported Negar in February this year, Sahil pleaded with officials to let her stay in the country, supplying their marriage documents as proof. He tells hitList he even made several trips to Europe to try and get Negar back to India.

Have you decided to divorce Negar Khan?
Yes, I have spoken to my lawyers and they are getting the papers ready. After a lot of thought, I have decided that it is high time I separated from Negar. I am no longer responsible for what she does with her life. She's free to take the path she chooses. Her lawyers are in Italy and they too are working out the divorce.

What prompted you to take this decision?
Over the last few months, a lot of things happened which were responsible for my decision. The main thing was the cultural difference. Her background is very different from mine, and so are her upbringing and values.

Secondly, the distance (after she was deported) was a hurdle. I tried my best to get her back to India, but it wasn't possible. My work started getting affected.

Also, her recent topless pictures, which were splashed in magazines and newspapers all over the world, cemented my decision to leave her. I don't know if she did it deliberately or it happened by mistake, but I cannot stand my wife being shown naked in public. It is just not a part of my upbringing.

What was her reaction to your decision?
We were shooting in Singapore for our movie, Short Cut, when I told her about my decision. She didn't say anything, but her mom said it was in her best interest to separate from me. There is no bitterness in the divorce; it's a mutual decision. I have no regrets whatsoever. But here onwards, she will have to find work on her own.

If a producer is willing to spend money and go abroad to shoot with her, I don't mind it. Her mom used to interfere a lot in our marriage. In fact, when I told Negar I wanted a divorce, it was her mother who did the talking — not my wife.

How has your family reacted to the news?
They are in shock for the second time. I hadn't told them about my marriage to her initially — they only found out we were married when she was deported. This time around, they are surprised that I am divorcing her.

They actually wanted to see us settled happily and have kids. But I guess that wasn't our destiny.
