SATI is a young woman in black…black saris, black choli, black bangles, black bindi, black everything…the colour of mourning to fight the crimes against women, the injustice, the oppression, the suppression, the torture, the exploitation that women have to bear day in and day out at home, at work, on the road, wherever they happen to be.

SATI draws her strength from the black she covers herself with; to fight the darkness women have to face at every step.

SATI is married to law to fight the miscarriage of law.

'SWAYAM' is the name of the law firm that takes the cases of primarily women victims and fights for them. Not only the lawyers, even the drivers and peons in 'SWAYAM' are women and wear black. 'SWAYAM' is an all-women law firm but not a feminist law firm. They also fight for men if they happened to be victims of miscarriage of justice.

SATI is 'Satya Ki Shakti' and the cry of millions of Indian women in pain.

Indiantelevision.com Team

(23 May 2006 11:00 pm)

MUMBAI: Sahara One Television has launched yet another new primetime show with a strong female protagonist. Sati… Satya Ki Shakti will be aired in the 8 pm slot from Mondays to Fridays from 29 May and will replace Buniyaad.

What's interesting here is that the story has been penned by Rang De Basanti writer Kamlesh Pandey and his team of writers. Sati… is about a victim of rape, who fights for her rights, challenges the decisions of the law and attains justice. The show revolves around an all women law firm who are shown to be fighting their personal and professional battles at home and in the court.

The show has been produced by Percept Picture Company and is directed by Hemant Prabhu.

Sahara One Television COO Purnendu Bose said, "Sati… Satya Ki Shakti is the story of today's changing times, where women are speaking up not only for themselves but for others as well. This show is yet another colour and feather in the cap of Sahara One Television entertainment basket – Television Ka Naya Rang. This is a story about one woman's fight against the atrocities committed against other women. Above all, it sends out a message of hope that justice will prevail if women stand together in times of adversity."

</>
Pandey added, "Sati… Satya Ki Shakti is a meaningful subject, which means the 'power of truth.' It is a unique concept on Indian television where the dividing line between fiction and reality almost disappears."

Yet again, Sahara One has made an attempt to dish out something different from the staple TRP topping kitchen politics on Indian television. The channel's other shows with strong female protagonists include Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki, Haare Kaanch Ki Chuudiyan, Kituu Sabb Jaantii Hai and the most recent – Suno… Harr Dill Kuchh Kehtaa Hai

Sati-Satya ki Shakti NEW SERIAL : Power of truth

By Ashish Mitra

Taking a break from domestic strife Sahara One launches a series of female protagonistsin their new daily serial, Sati-Satya ki Shakti penned by Rang De Basanti fame Kamlesh Pande. Watch the woman in black fight legal battles for her gender
Sati played by Manasi Salvi is a happy go lucky third-year law student at a stage where colours, fun and dreams make up the fabric of life. But in one tragic turn, one act of rage - she is raped by the very people she thought were her friends - changes her life. The culprits walk free through a shameless miscarriage of justice helped by hostile witnesses. Sati's dreams shatter, diffusing shades of black and darkness all around, her family distance themselves from her. This is one point where any other woman's life would cease. But Sati strives to fight back. Fight for justice and truth, for self -respect and dignity. Sati survives her ordeal, regains her health, completes her law education while recuperating emotionally and physically, and finally fights her own case. She decides to give the society, which had raped her identity and her beauty, a taste of her brains. And wins finally. Her rapists are imprisoned so are the conspirators. She becomes a role-model giving other women confidence and courage to fight for their cause. Realizing this fact with the support of other motivated women she establishes "Swayam", an all-women law firm to voice the unheard stories pleading justice at the foot of law. It symbolizes victory and power, similar to what her dark stages exemplified in her life. Thus Sati always covers herself in black. It is this black from which she draws her strength from to keep moving on and touching that extra mile to uncover the truth. With honesty in her heart, satisfaction in her mind Sati has everything that she ever hoped for. Except for the presence of her loved ones. This vacuum in her life leads to different turns and twists. These clearly reflect in her decisions and at different junctures of Sati's journey. Says Purnendu Bose, COO, SaharaOne Television, "We at SaharaOne have been constantly portraying various shades of woman through our serials. This time we wanted to portray a woman who is around, a simple woman who fights evil. This is a story about one woman's fight against the atrocities committed against other women. If not for anything else, the serial sends out a message of hope that justice will prevail if women stand together in times of adversity." After Rang De Basanti, writer Kamlesh Pandey has taken it upon himself that entertainment ought to have some substance and set out to make a point, difference to society. With the development of the storyline for Sati...Satya Ki Shakti, he yet again reinforces this belief alarming the industry for a wake up call. Says Pandey, "The dictionary meaning of Sati is the woman who stands by truth. But the word has lost its real meaning. Like a blind man is named 'Nayan Sukh' in this land. Sati..Satya Ki Shakti is a meaningful subject which means the 'power of truth'. It's a unique concept of Indian television where the dividing line between fiction and reality almost disappears." Sati...Satya ki Shakti is SaharaOne Television's endeavour to present on the Indian television, a point of transition from the unreal and generic taste that has developed lately. Produced by Percept Picture Company, Sati...Satya ki Shakti is directed by Hemant Prabhu who has shows like Kundali, Kanyadaan and Koshish ek Asha to his credit. The lead protagonist Sati is played by Manasi Salvi who has impressed viewers by her strong roles including the Marathi film Sari Var Sari for which she has won the state level award - Maharasthra Puraskar.Incidentally, Sari Var Sari, also won the Best Film award at the Star Screen Awards 2006. After Aashirwad, Koi Apna Sa and Saarthi, Manasi now plays Sati, a determined, headstrong lawyer all ready to take up revelant social issues and stand by them. Others in the cast includes Sandeep Rajaura, Karan Mehra, Dimple Inamdar, Dimple Hirji.

SaharaOne Television which has been focusing on providing an entertaining and engrossing portrayal of strong, independent thinking Indian women in its soaps and serials has made female characters like Kituu from Kituu...Sabb Jaantii Hai, Shyamlee from Hare Kkaanch Ki Choodiyan, and Rani of Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki and the recent Ambika of Suno...Harr Dill Kuchh Kehtaa Hai household names among television viewers.

Makeover time for Indian telly

HT Style

Mumbai, May 22, 2006

All our ducklings-turned-style divas and neighbourhood brats like Jassis and Miilees are out. The couch potato can sit back and relax in the fresh new breeze blowing over channels.

After almost two years of playing it safe with hackneyed ideas at prime time, the channels have finally decided to give viewers a break from overdone makeover shows and never-ending sad tales of saas-bahus.

Served fresh It's not just new faces that we are going to see at prime time, there are new genres, too, to replace the kitchen politics.

And, after flogging the weekend slot to death, the channels are now targeting weekdays. Come June 12 and Star Plus will launch Virasat, a new drama that will replace the successful show, Miilee.

Directed as well as produced by Ravi Chopra, Virasat boasts a big cast — Sangeeta Ghosh and Rohit Roy play the romantic lead; Amarr Upadhaya, Aman Verma and Kiran Kumar appear as other prominent characters.

It traces the travails of a business family with romance as its prop.

Says Shailja Kejriwal, senior creative director, Star India, "Priyanka Kharbanda, the female protagonist of this show, is romantic and tough at mind." On May 29, Sahara One is set to launch Sati - Satya Ki Shakti.

Channel officials decline to give out details right now. Mushy moods The small screen is not shying away from trying out the love theme at prime time.

Bani's shy love tale, Kassam Se (Zee TV), is already on air to give competition to the innocent romance of Rusty in Aisa Des Hai Mera (Sony).

And with Virasat, TV's original romance queen Sangeeta Ghosh will add oomph to the 9 pm slot.

According to Ashish Kaul of Zee TV, "Though romance has always been an intrinsic part of tele-tales, this is after a long time that channels are dedicating prime time to out-and-out romantic soaps."

Just got younger Whether it's Kittu of Kittu Sab Jaanti Hai (Sahara One) or Chandini of India Calling (Star One), the female protagonist of the new shows no more come draped in saris, worrying about their husband's second wife.

Naughty characters like Radha of Pyaar Ke Do Naam-Ek Radha Ek Shyam (Star Plus) and Ananya of Jab Love Hua (Zee TV) are more likely to strike a chord with the viewers with fun loving fizz than Dr Simran of Astitva or Jassi.

Says Kavita Barjatya of Rajshree productions who've made Pyaar..., "The youthfulness of the character helps it grow and live for long."

Sahara One set to reveal kiska time shuru

Posted online: Friday, April 07, 2006 at 0000 hours IST

Khit-pit saas ka time khatam..says one ad... Pati parmeshwar ka time khatam shouts another...No, this is not a promo for another serial. It is bigger than that. It's a campaign against existing soaps and the channels airing them. Though not exactly a new refrain, it is being done differently from Sony which has been claiming that its soaps "take you away from kitchen politics" and Zee that too has been trying to go one up on STAR Plus, the numero uno satellite channel today. This time it's Sahara One that is donning a new look and changing its positioning.

On April 3, Sahara One unveiled its new packaging television ke naye rang and programming menu. The logo colour that was earlier specific to a time band has now turned pink and that will be the colour for all time bands. However, the distinctive saffron and green stripes have been retained next to the name Sahara.

Pink which is a feminine colour, projects a "soft" appeal but Purnendo Bose, COO, Sahara One, also points out that it has an inner strength exuded via the bloom. "We wanted to bring a vibrant, youthful look that reflected our target audience," he informs.

Speaking about the new avatar, Bose says that the logo and the programming is indicative of the channel's new branding. It is targeting today's woman who, according to Bose, is strong, intelligent and independent. "Our shows Kituu Sab Janti Hai, Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon and Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyan already project that thinking. TV is supposed to be a reflection of society and it is not restricted to or defined by saas-bahu conflicts. The woman today is efficiently managing her home and career and that is what we want to showcase," Bose asserts.

Since Sahara already has major characters like Kituu, Rani and Shyamlee, three independent thinking women as its icons, the channel is not overhauling its programming, majorly. Nor are any serials being taken off the air. However, four new shows, symbolic of the current strategy, will be introduced gradually over the next couple of months. One of them, Sati, Satya Ki Shakti will replace Buniyaad which is ending on May 27.

The makeover has been announced through a series of promos and teaser campaigns across medium, on-air and off-air. A Singapore-based agency, Bruce Dunlop Associates (BDA) was roped in to design the new on-air look for the channel, with Shantanu Moitra composing the sound for the new packaging. The three-pronged strategy of the channel's transformation includes catchy promos, the launch of four new shows and finally a campaign that reveals kiska time shuru.

That's not all. If Sony popularised the game of cricket with women through the glamorous Mandira Bedi, Sahara One has gone a step ahead and launched a cricket-oriented contest exclusively for the fairer sex. 'Naya Rang-Cricketers Ke Sang-NRCKS which started on March 27, will run till April 8. As part of the contest one question will be asked between 8 and 10 pm everyday. The winners along with one of their loved ones stand a chance to win a fully paid trip with Indian cricketers on a chartered plane for the last five one-day Internationals to held from April 3 to April 15. The lucky ones of NRCKS contest will be announced on the channel six days prior to each match. They also get the opportunity to dine and wine with cricketing superstars and watch the match from exclusive seats.

Bose says that the contest is an extension of their strategy of luring in and targetting the women audience. "Cricket has passion, humour and drama—-emotions that are reflected in our serials," is Bose's interesting analysis.

While rival channels are investing crores in reality-based talent hunts, Sahara One is content with airing Mrs India World and Indian Divas contest. "We want women to pariticipate in our shows and this is the best way to do it. The other talent-hunts have been done to death," argues the channel's COO. Bose however is not averse to game shows which will happen once these new shows get underway.
