Hello Alisha and Madhura!!!
It's quite an interesting topic that you had started so couldn't resist myself from joining it. 😛
To be completely honest, I solely blame audience and specially a certain amount of online audience for the degradation of the shows.
We can't blame the producers always as in recent times there have been shows with great/bold concept but none of them could fetch TRP. Courtesy - P.O.W. , Dehleez, Silsila, Kya Qusoor Hai Amla Ka and probably there are more which I have no idea about.
What I personally found offending is that in almost every forum where I have visited, people have this great idea about their choice and they always belittle the middle aged women for liking Saas-Bahu. But at the end of the day, even these educated people settle for hot romance.
I had caught glimpse of Shrenu Parikh when EBP was on air. She looked so innocent and bubbly. In fact my mother, who hardly likes any actress, used to say this girl's innocence and chirpiness is infectious. When Ek Bhram's promo came out, I would be honest, the mantis and spider promo was funny but the other promos featuring her intrigued me. I mean the subtle change in her expression within seconds was amazing. I even watched the initial episodes of that show. But the forum became so negative that I had to leave.
A huge portion of people just wanted Zain with Aditi and actually did negative publicity to the show. Another portion just wanted him with Shrenu because together they looked hot and the best one - the actor who was playing her husband, was shamed saying he is only a side character and doesn't deserve to be paired with Shrenu. 👏 Some said Jahnvi character was spicy so a SEEDHA hero wouldn't be appreciated. 👏 But all their complaining stopped when two good-looking actors were paired together and ultimately story became pure shit.
So how can we really expect producers to take chances when this is the actual reaction of audience who can't see anything beyond looks and hot romance?
Like Alisha had said that people should have rejected the TAWAIF track to show their disregard for misogynistic stories. But I actually came across tweets where people were excited for the resulting TASHAN. 🤢 I have seen comment in Jinn forum like as long as there is romance, they are okay with it. So ultimately it's the educated/technologically active portion of the audience who are encouraging the makers to show us so called TASHAN WALA LOVE or HOT ROMANCE where they incorporate the good girl getting attracted to the bad boy to the extreme level and make them downright abusive.
What's funnier is that these same people mock SAAS-BAHU shows and their audience saying they can't see anything behind MASALA. When you can't see beyond ROMANCE, who are you to judge others?
I have honestly seen the recent episodes on FF mode as I was finally free after my exam and after that I made this comment.
If any show luckily attracts a big portion of the audience then they can go on and on about how extremely UNIQUE and OUT OF THE BOX their show is and thrive.
Truth is, at the end of the day, apart from a handful of audience, no one really gives a shit about story progression or character development. The audience are actually the main hurdle now for showing good shows with better/sensible stories.
