The Curry-ous Readers 🍛 Book Talk Reading Challenge September 2025
It was a humid morning in Mumbai with the rush hour at its peak the noise of travelling scooters and auto rickshaws bombarded the roads of Mumbai with exhilarating CO2 emissions. A young girl lay in her bed hearing the noise of her mother woke up not wanting too. "Navya wake up now otherwise you are going to be late and then don't complain to me I want you out of your room in 5 minutes otherwise you're in trouble!" Navya jumped out of her bed. "Oh God Mamma aap bhi na, sone hi nahi dehte hai!" she huffed and puffed and finally came out of the washroom dressed in a simple salwar suit and she combed her long silky hair in her mirror. She was beautiful. What an Indian girl should look like. Not even the slightest bit proud, innocent and pure. She applied a little bit of kajal and that was it. This girl was called Navya she is a sweet, cultured girl and extremely intelligent. Not only clever she topped each exam every year and has won student of the year in nearly every year. She was an achiever and she wanted to bring change in India, she wanted to be the biggest doctor in India and change the way the healthcare ran in India and bring equal chances for the poorer people. She had dreams of her own but she never underestimated her parent's dreams of getting her married. She had Nayi Soch but she was also well cultured and believed in cultural norms. She quickly grabbed her bag and walked out of her room. She greeted her parents and grandma and they then did the aarti. Her mum always told her that in the morning if you pray to god and then go to work or school you will always have a good day. After singing the aarti they all had a family breakfast together. "Mamma I don't know how long I will be today because it is the first day, but I will ring you if I am late!" Meeta nodded and smiled "Beta jaldi aana aur thumare papa aaj apko drop kar denge!" Deepak sat on the sofa reading the financial times as he looked over to Navya ready "Come on Beta I need to get to work urgently today, I have a big meeting with American investors if I get this deal I am sure in for a pay rise!" Navya smiled at her papa and his enthusiasm to going to work! She always wanted to be like him, enthusiastic and the urge to work and succeed. She was sure of it, in 4 years time she will be Dr Navya Mishra! Navya was dropped off by her Dad to her new medical school. She was impressed there were a few long towered glass buildings assuming they were labs and classrooms. There were also pretty gardens with fountains and flowers everywhere. Perfect for picnics at lunch. Towards the far end of the university there was a large canteen. There was an oozing smell of Bombay club sandwiches and fresh salads. Her Dad hugged her and wished her good luck as he drove into the campus in his new BMW 5 series. "Navya beta take care today and make sure you work hard and stick with your friends don't be around strangers!" Navya nodded and agreed to his every word. She knew he wanted to look after her and make sure she was okay. He was a bit overprotective but he only said it because he truly cares. Navya walked out of the car and waved her dad goodbye. She walked down the small path leading to the entrance of the school. There were a few people around some students running around like lunatics. What are they even doing here? Its medical school not college where you can mess about and still pass. Where is there discipline if I ran this school I would make sure students like this don't even get in, they are wasting their parents money and most importantly their faith. As she walked by people were eyeing her. Voices whispered "This is that girl Navya Mishra topper in every year; she surely is going to be a success this year!" Navya looked at them from the corner of their eye. She slowly walked past and the only reason why they knew her was because she always got into the newspaper. She walked into her first lecture nice and early and started preparing herself. The tutor walked in and was shocked to see a student here so early even before the teachers got here "Excuse me why are you here so early dear, classes dont start until another 15minutes!" The teacher was still in shock but appreciated Navya's dedication to university on the very first day. "Sorry maam, I thought I would start preparing for the lecture early if it is a problem I can wait outside!" She ruffled her books and pens and started standing her was about to reach the door when a tall figure collided with her and everything scattered on the floor. "Oh no!" Navya looked down worried and lost. The tall figure looked at her strangely and slightly annoyed at why she is getting so scared. He helped her pick up all her sheets and then they share an eye lock. She is completely lost in his eyes. They are a hazel brown colour and he is lost with her long hair blowing ever so gently with the breeze. But he is annoyed as she is pulling a weird expression at her. "Here are your books!" Anant slowly passed the books and she smiled a little. He thought she looks real familiar but she didn't even say thanks how rude. Anant shrugged it off and the bell went for the start of the lecture. He was there early as well because he was a workaholic and a hard working guy he wanted success and his dream was to change the medical world just like Navya. He was unaware of this. As a coincidence these two were in the same lecture. Navya sat on her own and Anant was sitting in the other row of seats. Anant looked over to see her there. He couldn't take his eyes off her. She didn't look to see he was there and then she saw her friends Appy and Shraddha. She smiled over to them and they were very happy to see her after the long summer holidays. They shared their girly talk and Shraddha looked towards Anant who was watching Navya laughing. She smiled a little. The class started and their first topic that they were going to learn about was the heart, Navya loved medicine and always dreamed of being a doctor, so did Anant he didn't believe he could place his name in the family business but he wanted to carve his own dreams and make a name for himself. The tutor quickly identified the stronger students and she could clearly see that Anant and Navya were very intelligent. She asked them both a lot of questions and they answered them correctly. But Anant was very competitive. Every time Navya tried to answer a question he would always interrupt her. This irritated Navya so she did the same back. Class ended and Navya and her friends chilled out on the grass outside. Anant walked past the trio and rolled his eyes when he looked over at Navya. He met Sameer over at the entrance as his class was different and also his classes started a bit later. "Hey Sameer yaar you okay?!" Anant hugged him and they shared their greetings. Anant looked a bit annoyed "Yaar itne gusse me kyu hai? Kya hua aaj mood thik nahi lag raha hai?" Sameer held his friends shoulder to see what the matter was. "Are kuch nahi yaar, rene de chal coffee pene chlate hai kahe baar?" The duo went out of the gates and they went out for a coffee for lunch. The day ended with classes complete and the three friends went to their respective homes in the rickshaws. Navya reached home on time and her mother enquired about her day at university "Kesa din raha aaj beta?" Navya sat on the coach with her cup of warm ginger tea and she didn't realise that her mum was asking her a question. She felt bad today. For some reason. Meeta came and put her hand on her shoulder. "Navya beta kaha kogayi hai tu?" Navya came back to reality and she made her mum sit down and she smiled. "Mum it was okay, nothing special just studied hard and spent time with friends!" Navya smiled and then went into her bedroom to get fresh and then also went and sat on her balcony. There was rain falling in the sky and she felt the little rain droplets on her palm and closed her eyes as the gentle breeze brushed over her soft skin. As she closed her eyes a small smile crept on her face and then she was interrupted by her phone flashing at her it was Shraddha and Appy on a conference call. She happily picked it up "Hey Guys! You all okay?" Navya spoke sweetly through her handset. "Yaar Navya aaj lagta hai tu kaafe pareshan thi college me?!" Appy spoke quite concerned there was a short period of silence on the phone and Shraddha spoke "Navya come on kya baat hai lagta hai is ladke ne thume kaafe hurt kiya?" Navya continued her silent treatment and then decided to speak her heart out to her friends "Guys me theek hu, us ladke ki to aadat he bhare bhare bathe karne ki bada ghar ka ladka hai na isliye, tum fikar mat karo guys mujhe kuch nahin hua" They all smiled away and they put the phone down. Navya looked to the starry sky and she felt a little sad. Why did he do that? I was only answering a question why did he feel the need to only interrupt in my answers not anyone else's, why am I so worried let him do that it's not going to make a difference to my education and my life. Within her thoughts she fell asleep on her balcony resting her head gently on the cushions that were surrounded around her.
