I WOULD LOVE TO ACT IN A SHOW LIKE 24
"Arjun doesn't need a makeover; he's a style icon as it is," divulges designer Anahita Shroff of heartthrob Arjun Rampal, who took us by surprise with his great performance in Rock On this year. AR has now descended on the small screen as a judge on Nach Baliye 4, which raised quite a few eyebrows.
While Arjun gets acquainted with the various dance forms for Nach', Anahita styles him with a brand new funky and edgy look for the same, a far cry from his clichd signature style. All this and more, while we have a quick tte--tte with Arjun Rampal on everything about Indian television.
How much time do you spend watching TV everyday?
I don't watch television that much, mainly because I don't get the time. But if I do, I watch sports channels, the History Channel and Nach Baliye 4 for some time. If I had more time, I would rather play video games.
Which are your favourite shows on TV?
I love Nach Baliye 4!
Who are your favourite personalities on TV?
Shah Rukh Khan.
If you were to act in a daily soap, it would be'
I would love to act in a show like 24. But if you ask me about an Indian daily soap, I don't think I would want to act in one, as I don't watch them at all.
What do you love the most about Indian television?
I think our Indian serials are quite mad and crazy. Indian TV is growing and the shows are getting a little more original. So that's pretty cool.
What do you detest the most about Indian television?
The herd mentality; that is if you start one show on a channel, you get ten more shows exactly like the first. And all these shows lack ideas.
Name two television stars you'd recognize even in a crowd.
I think Shah Rukh Khan and Mr. Bachchan! But seriously speaking of television soap stars, it would be Kapil and Anjali, who are dancing in Nach' I know them not only because of Nach', but also because they are doing a show called Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat. So I will recognize them instantly in a huge crowd.
Your take on Indian news channels'
Some of the news channels are really good and reliable. But some of them have breaking news every five minutes and these are the ones that I don't believe in.
When's the last time you watched TV at a stretch?
This weekend, that too because Nach Baliye 4 was going on.
Your earliest memories of Indian television'
Oh, I have some wonderful memories. I remember standing on our roof and shifting the antenna, trying to figure out if the signal has come or not!
Why do you think film stars are turning to TV of late?
Television is a medium, which goes out to so many people and it is growing hugely every single day. It's a great opportunity to do something that you enjoy doing. You cannot ignore it. I for one, am from the entertainment industry, and I want to grow within this industry.
And television is very much a big part of it. Even when I was invited to judge Nach... I looked at it as an opportunity to understand the medium. So I think it's perfectly fine for film stars to come on the small screen.
Your dream role on television'
I think it would be hosting a show like Oprah. It will be very cool.
If you were a TV star'
I would be very very very successful!
