There were a million ways he could've said, "You are too precious for me". But the mixture of emotions with which he said it as a part of conversation, inserted among so many other meaningful lines he is saying, this still stands out on it's own.

What allured me towards behir initially was this, their normal and casual way of expressing most intense emotions, may it be love, passion, fear or insecurities. They both aren't " I love you couples. This is how they express. Mahirji goes on a rant and bela yells at him for being careless about his well-being.

Here Mahirji is trying to turn around and avoid exposing himself to bela, one he doesn't want her to see him this angry and on the verge of losing control
Two, his self preservation isn't letting him be totally vulnerable in front of her, especially in given circumstances.

Initially I had pegged him for a ravenclaw, I know, I know but can you blame me? But gradually and after his "bela kahan hain, meri bela and Rehan has incident, I was like yeh toh red and gold ka griffindor bomb hai, phat ne ke liye bilkul taiyaar!
