CHAPTER 16

[ Present ]

The luggage bags which Bela was holding fell from her hands as soon as her eyes met Maahir's as they had never seen each other's face since past 8 years. A few droplets of tears formed in the lap of her eyes which were struggling to flow down and by God's grace Bela allowed them to do so. 8 years, in matter of words might take only 1/10^th of a space in one line but in real point of view, peoples' lives change, their surroundings gets changed but in case of Bela and Maahir nothing changed except for the fact that they were heavily successful in their professional lives and their lives have been filled by the love of their daughter, although separately but still it has, which was also the only common things in their lives and also the other most important fact of their life was that both of them never stopped loving each other no matter how much they had pretended to hate in front of others but the fact that they still love each other and will always love each other only would never change... at least in these lives. So when after such a long time, Bela and Maahir were standing in front of each other, the first thought that came in each other's minds was not that they were separated but how much vacuum had been created in their lives due to their separation. To both of them, it was like a dream as none of them had ever thought that they would be going to meet each other like that and they both were desperate to feel that it was not a dream and even if it was a dream they didn't want it to end. Maahir continued staring at her without blinking as he already got lost in his memory lane where Bela was not just the woman with whom he got married but also a cute child whom he had to literally raise just like a father sometimes. Bela also remembered when she just used to cuddle to him while sleeping and just how he tolerated each of her childish acts without getting mad at her and how much and how boundlessly they loved each other that without seeing each other they used to die every single second and they never missed any opportunity romancing with each other no matter what their surroundings were. Bulbul, on the other side, was very scared as she knew that whenever her parents would meet, there would be a huge fiasco or world war III but she got confused as nothing happened and they were just staring at each other. On getting an opportunity, Bela ran to Madhu and asked, "Naani ye kya ho raha? Maine to socha tha ke ye dono fighting karenge par ye to kuch bhi nehi kar rahe hai? Madhu just put her finger on her lips and looked at Bulbul asking her to remain quiet. Both Bela and Maahir started to walk towards each other as if they were in some kind of trans.

Bela and Maahir stood in front of each other like decades after and both of their conditions were so similar as both of them wanted to hug each other, to feel each other desperately and both of their eyes were not moving away from each other. She, slowly like a hypnotized being, raised her hand which was actually shaking, to put it on his cheek and Maahir desperately wanted her to so that. No one could even imagine the raging storm of emotions that was blowing inside their hearts.

The moment, Bela put her hand on Maahir's cheek, her lips shivered as tears continued flowing down. With her shivering lips, she uttered, "Ye... ye sach hai na? Maahir too was too overwhelmed with emotions to reply but still somehow, he managed to answer back, "I... I... hope so! Maahir put his hand on her hand and kissed on the palm of her hand. Bela and Maahir both held each other's hands and they both burst out into tears as Maahir kissed her hands and Bela again asked, "Ekbaar...??? She raised both her arms a bit but could not complete her sentence and Maahir could not help but chuckle and said, "Itne saalo mein tum shaayad bhul gayi ho ke tumne aajtak kabhi kisi bhi cheez ke liye mujhse permission nehi maangi hai... Before he could complete his sentence, Bela almost jumped over him and hugged him tight by his shoulder and Maahir too hugged her back by her waist as tightly as possible as if his dear life depended on it.

Everyone was standing and watching Maahir and Bela's first reunion and naturally, except for Suhaani's mother and Bulbul, everyone was happy. Mrs. Sarna obviously didn't like Maahir and so she had her own obvious reasons but in case of Bulbul, well she was standing confusingly like a stupid monument completely having no idea what was going on since she expected somewhat different reaction. When she looked at Madhu, she found Madhu was crying as well as smiling which made Bulbul even more confused. She again pulled Madhu's hand and by moving her hands, asked about what was going on and Madhu replied, "Dekh puttar tu hamesha chahti thi na ke tere ma baap ek dusre ke saath ho, dekh tera sapna sach ho raha hai. But Bulbul instead of replying, asked, "But naani why am I not happy then? Mujhe itna confused sa feel kyu ho raha hai? On hearing that, Madhu made a face but still she didn't say anything to Bulbul. In a crying tone, Bela said, "I love you so much Maahir, I just can't live without you anymore, I'm so tired of it. Maahir, in the same tone replied, "To kyu gayi thi... kyu chali gayi thi mujhe chod kar? Kitna kaha tha tumse ke meri koi galti nehi thi lekin tumne... Tumne to mujhe itni bari sazaa di ke Bulbul ke baare mein bhi kuch nehi bataya... The moment Maahir took Bulbul's name Bela opened her eyes and all the past memories of Maahir deceiving Bela, she leaving him back 8 years ago and all her sufferings due to their broken relationship and marriage flashed in front of her eyes and the moment she remembered them, she pushed Maahir away from her and looked at him in such a way as if she had touched someone untouchable. She vigorously rubbed her dress and her face as if trying to rub off Maahir's touch from her body which scared Madhu and Maahir and mostly Bulbul. She screamed aloud, "I hate you! looking directly into Maahir's eyes and turned back and ran towards the home in a delusional state leaving everyone confused. After Bela left, Maahir looked broken and also as if he woke up from a deep sleep. Everyone left except for Madhu and Bulbul and Maahir, who could not process what happened just now, was about to fall when both of them held him. Madhu asked Maahir, "Puttar tu thik to hai na? Maahir looked delusional and looked at Madhu and said, "Vo Bela... Madhu put an assuring hand on his shoulder and replied, "Tu fikar na kar puttar sab thik ho jaayega... 8 saal baad... itna sab kuch... Bulbul held Maahir's hand and said, "Daddy daddy mujhe na bohot dar lag raha hai. Please aap mat jaao na kahi agar mamma mujhe lekar chali gayi to? Maahir could not say anything to her and instead Madhu said to Bulbul, "Puttar main hu na, abhi papa ko jaane de. Dekh abhi teri ma aayi hai na to hume to unka dhyaan rakhna parega na. Chal shabbash tu to mera bahadur bachcha hai, abhi papa ko ghar jaane de. Bulbul pouted at Maahir with teary eyes but he did not have that mental set up to react properly to Bulbul. So after Bulbul left his hand, he walked back to his car in a trance and drove outside the gate. After he left, Bulbul, almost in a crying tone asked Madhu, "Naani mamma aise andar kyu chali gayi? Kya mamma ab kabhi mujhse bhi baat nehi karegi? Madhu cupped Bulbul's face and replied, "Na puttar vo tere papa ko teri ma ne itne saalo baad dekha hai na to bas thora sa... Main keh rahi hu na tu fikar mat kar, main hu na? Tujhe teri naani par to bharosa hai na to bas... Saying she held Bulbul's hand and took her inside the house.

Maahir was sitting on the couch of Kuhu and Rohit's apartment's drawing room just opposite to Kuhu and Rohit. After sometime, Kuhu said, "Ye to ek din hona hi tha Maahir, that's what I always tried to tell you. Now welcome to the real maze of life! Rohit said to Kuhu, "Arey yaar Kuhu abhi abhi to Bela aayi hai aur tum abhi se bichaare Maahir ko dara rahi ho. Please baby let him relax! Kuhu looked at Rohit and replied, "Main usko relax karne se nehi rok rahi hu Rohit kyuki sahi mein abhi usko apna dimaag thanda rakhne ka aur bohot zyaada patience rakhne ki bohot hi zyaada zarurat hai. Main bas itna keh rahi hu ke its very natural, ye to hona hi tha kyuki Bulbul aayi hai to Bela bhi ek din zarur aayegi. Rohit got up and brought one bottle of wine with two empty glasses and put them on the table. He poured wine on both the glasses and forwarded one of the glasses to Maahir. Maahir looked at the glass and instead of taking the glass, he made an annoyed face and picked up the bottle and poured almost half the bottle into his throat and seeing that Rohit remained open mouthed and looked with shock towards Kuhu on which Kuhu blinked her eyes in an assuring manner. After Maahir put the bottle back on the table, he angrily said, "Vo... vo mujhe I HATE YOU bolkar gayi!! How dare she? Usko koi haq hi nehi banta hai mujhe ye bolne ka, ye to mujhe usko bolna chahiye tha and I REALLLY SO SO HATE HER. Mere saath jeene marne ki kasmein kha kar, mujhpar yakeen na karne waali kaun thi... VO. Mujhe chorkar jaane waali kaun thi... VO. Mujhe apni pregnancy ke baare mein nehi bataane waali kaun thi... VO. Mujhe meri bachchi se aur usko apne baap se 8 saalo tak dur rakhne waali kaun thi... VO. Meri bachchi jo aisi bani hai, itni bigdi hui hai, uska zimmedaar kaun hai... VO. To phir gussa kisko aana chahiye, mujhe ke usko? Baat karti hai! Mera na pata hai dil kya kar raha hai... Uske ghar mein jaau aur jee bhar kar uske saath fight karu. Kuhu saw Maahir and understood that the wine was slowly reacting and it was getting to his head and so she said, "Thik hai jhagra kar lena lekin Maahir jhagra karne se tumhaara problem solve nehi hoga. Uske liye you have to be in control and sober kyuki now as the situation has become you have to take a decision and that too very soon. Maahir raised his finger on Kuhu's face and said, "Usne mujhe usse pyar karne ki sazaa di hai, usko meri zindagi mein waapas nehi aana hai to na aaye, I don't care lekin agar... agar usne bhul kar bhi Bulbul ko... meri bachchi ko mujhse dur karne ke baare mein apne sapne mein bhi socha na, I'm not gonna spare her. Usne hamesha sweet and innocent Maahir Sehgal ko dekha hai na, jisne usse sab kuch luta kar pyar kiya tha, ab usko pata chalega ke ye Maahir Sehgal apni bachchi ke liye torturous Devil bhi ban sakta hai. Main usko chain se rehne nehi dunga agar usne Bulbul ko yaha se lekar jaane ke baare mein socha bhi to. Rohit muttered to Kuhu, "Baby abhi ye sab baate karne ki koi zarurat hai kya? Dekh hi to rahi ho na kya condition hai abhi iski, ye apne hosh mein nehi hai. Ek to gusse mein hai aur upar se... mera naya waala wine aadha khatam kar diya... Haaye!! Kitne chaao se apne liye laaya tha varna tumhaare vajah se to wine peene ka mauka hi nehi milta hai. Socha tha tumhaare pregnancy ke vajah se ab tum to ye sab pee nehi paaogi to main... Kuhu angrily grinned and said to Rohit, "Seriously Rohit??? Tumhe wine ki pari hai? Main yaha na beth kar Maahir ko reality check dene ki koshish kar rahi hu jo main hamesha hi karti hu lekin tum hamesha mujhe rok dete ho. Sach mein tum mard na bilkul bhi practical nehi ho. Maine aajtak jo kuch bhi kaha hai sab sach to hua hai na? Main jaanti thi ye complication aayegi iske life mein lekin... main Maahir ko bhi blame nehi karti bichaara itne saalo baad Bulbul se mila hai so naturally vo uske baare mein hi sochna chahta tha, uske saath time spend karna chahta tha. But Maahir na kabhi bhi uske baare mein sochna nehi chahta tha. Rohit stopped Kuhu in the middle and said, "Its ok now baby! Pehle na I think Maahir ko ghar pohchaana zyaada zaruri hai. Abhi iski jo haalat hai na usko akele to jaane nehi de sakte hai. Kuhu looked at Maahir and said, "Hadh hai yaar abhi to sham bhi nehi hui aur ye haal hai. Let him stay here, jab nasha utar jaayega to khud hi ja sakta hai. Aise akele mein ghar jaayega to aur bhi bara waala siyappa ho jaana hai. Rohit agreed and then told Maahir that he needed to take some rest and cool himself down so that he could take the right decision and then asked him to have a nap in another room of their apartment. At first, Maahir was not ready to stay there but on persuation from Rohit and warning from Kuhu, finally he agreed to stay there. On the other side, Bela, after the confrontation with Maahir, didn't come out of her room all day which made the whole atmosphere of the house became very quiet. When Madhu tried to intervene, finally Bela, who was totally silent and was sitting in her room, broke down in her arms and cried her heart out and Bulbul, who was the most affected person, in all the fiasco blamed herself for creating such a situation which had hurt her mother in such a way. She was so worried about her mother that she didn't even dare to call her from out of her room and instead she sat outside Bela's room all day and didn't even take a single bite as her mother too had to taken food the whole day. Slowly, the night had spread her wings over the world and Bela was still sitting on her room putting her head on Madhu's lap. Madhu continuously patted her head and said, "I can understand puttar ke tere upar kya beet rahi hai. Maahir ke saath tere zindagi ke jitni achchi yaadein judi hui hai utni hi buri yaadein bhi judi hui hai. Main jaanti hu ke tere liye ye sab kuch asaan nehi hai lekin puttar... Isme Bulbul ki kya galti hai bata? Vo to hamesha se hi apne... The moment Madhu mentioned Bulbul's name, Bela woke up with a jerk and looked around the room and said, "Bulbul... Bulbul kaha hai? Kaha hai vo? Usko to dekha bhi nehi... Kahi Maahir usko... Bela came down of her bed and then rushed towards the door to open it and come out. When she opened the door, she found Bulbul sleepin on her doorstep. She, almost screamed, "Bulbul!! Bulbul!! Beta yaha kaise... Mamma mamma bahaar aao dekho! Madhu came running out of the room and found Bulbul in that condition. Bela picked Bulbul up and then brought her inside her bedroom and put her on the bed. She sat beside her and then called her by slightly slapping on her cheek and slowly Bulbul woke up. Bela asked, "Kya hua bachche? Tum bahaar kyu thi? Bulbul slowly replied, "Main aapka wait kar rahi thi mamma par aap to darwaaza hi nehi khol rahi thi. Phir na bethe bethe mujhe neend aa gayi to main so gayi. Bela asked, "To tum bahaar kyu khari thi beta? Bulbul replied, "Aapko maine kitni awaaz di mamma lekin aapne suna hi nehi. Just then Suhaani came with a servant with a a tray of food and replied, "Kaha khaana khaaya di, maine kitna kaha usko ke beta khaana kha lo par nehi sirf ek hi baat main mamma ke bina khaana nehi khaaungi aur ek nivaala bhi nehi daala hai apne muh mein. Abhi bua ne jaakar bola ke aapke liye kuch bhijwaane ke liye to main khaana lekar aayi. Bela was shocked hearing that Bulbul had not taken any food since afternoon and she said, "Bulbul itne der bhukha nehi beth sakti hai uski tabiyat kharaab ho jaati hai aur ye to bachchi hai aap sabko to zabardasti khilaana chahiye tha na usko. She looked at Bulbul and in a very worried tone said, "Abhi to indigestion ho gaya hoga usko. When Bela tried to feed Bulbul, she refused and cuddled towards her mother by which Bela understood that she was not feeling well as presumed. Bela then asked for two bowls of plain soup for Bulbul and her and while feeding Bulbul, she asked, "Daddy ke baare mein kabse pata hai? Bulbul looked at her and replied, "Last 1 month se! Bela remained quiet, something which Bulbul was not habituated to and so she said, "I'm sorry mamma mujhe nehi pata tha ke aap itna hurt ho jaayengi, main to bas daddy se milna chahti thi aur aapko pata hai vo bohot achche hai. Unhone kabhi aapko hurt nehi kiya, unki kabhi koi galti nehi thi, please aap batti karlo na daddy se phir hum sab ek saath rahenge. Aapko pata hai daddy mujhe kabhi nehi daatte hai, vo kabhi mujhpar shout nehi karte hai, main jab jo khaana chahu vo mujhe bana kar khilaate hai aur ekdin jab main bimaar pari, vo office bhi nehi gaye mere liye. Instead of replying directly, Bela just said, "Tum rest karo beta mamma abhi aa jaayegi thori der mein. Saying she put the bowl back into the tray and then wrapped her in a blanket and left from there. After coming out of her bedroom, Bela called someone and gave some instructions and was about to come to Madhu, when Bela found that she herself was coming to Bela and on finding her in the way, Madhu asked, "Kaha ja rahi hai Bela? Bela replied, "Kahi nehi mamma main aaphike paas aa rahi thi. Main aapko ye bataana chah rahi thi ke aap shaadi aur reception vagera khatam karke hi waapas aaiye, main Bulbul ko lekar kal parso hi waapas Toronto chali jaaungi, maine already bol bhi diya hai, to jab ke tickets milenge tabhi chale jaayenge. Madhu was shocked on hearing Bela's decision and asked, "Bela ye kya keh rahi hai tu? Abhi abhi to aayi hai aur...? Bela held Madhu's hand and replied, "Mujhe yaha nehi rehna hai aur aap dekh nehi rahi hai mom already Bulbul Maahir se kitni zyaada attached ho chuki hai aur Maahir ne bhi to usko spoil karne mein koi kasar nehi chora aur tabhi to usne mujhse itne dino tak jhut bola. Main jaanti thi koi khichdi vo paka rahi hai par mujhe nehi pata tha ke Maahir ne usko is kadar, is hadh tak uksaya hai ke India aane ke liye itni bari harkat ki hai usne. Tabhi mujhe laga ke bina kisike shey ke Bulbul itna bara kadam kabhi nehi uthaayegi. Ek mahine se dono ke beech mein contact hai aur aap mamma bilkul ye mat boliyega ke aapko is baare mein pata nehi tha. Bulbul ko abhi main ek aur minute bhi yaha nehi rehne dungi varna vo Maahir meri beti ko... mere jeene ke ek laute sahaare ko mujhse cheen lega aur ye main bilkul bhi nehi hone dungi. Madhu shook her by her shoulder and said, "Tu paagal hai?? Tera dimaag kharaab ho gaya hai? Tujhse zyaada to Bulbul samajhdaar hai. Tujhe kya lagta hai ke tu bolegi aur Bulbul muh uthaakar tere saath chal degi? Tu jaanti nehi hai kya usko? Pata hai na vo kaisi hai? Upar se chala Bulbul ki baat jaane bhi dete hai, lekin Maahir... tu usko bina bataaye Bulbul ko yaha se le jaayegi aur vo kuch nehi karega? Mazaak hai sab kuch? Aur ye sab tu kya bol rahi hai ke Maahir ne Bulbul ko uksaaya hai... Usko sabse achchi tarah se tu jaanti hai... Tujhe kya lagta hai ke Maahir aisi ochi harkat karega? Us bichaare ko to pata bhi nehi tha ke Bulbul ne India aane ke liye kya kaand kiya hai? Tu bohot achchi tareeke se jaanti hai ke Maahir ek bohot hi suljha hua aur zimmedaar insaan hai. Bela removed Madhu's hand and replied, "Bulbul meri beti hai, main ma hu uski, vo mere saath hi rahegi aise hi achaanak se 8 saal baad aakar Maahir ko main apni beti cheenne nehi dungi. Usne mujhse mera sab kuch cheen liya ab Bulbul ko nehi le jaane dungi main usko. Madhu understood that Bela was still unable to come out of the trauma of seeing Maahir after such a long time and so she was behaving like an immatured person but still Madhu felt like she must induce some senses inside Bela and so she said, "Bela dimaag se kaam le! Pehli baat tum dono legally separated nehi ho aur chahe jis kisi bhi reason se tum dono alag reh rahe ho, par ye baat sach hai that you concealed your pregnancy from your husband. 8 saal baad usko pata chala hai ke uski ek beti hai. Abhi agar usko bina bataaye tu Bulbul ko yaha se le jaane ki koshish karegi aur agar is vajah se Maahir legal step liya to Bela ye India hai Toronto nehi, musibat mein tu paregi jab ye saamne aayega ke tune Bulbul ke baare mein Maahir ko kabhi kuch bataya hi nehi. Thande dimaag se soch ke tu kya karna chahti hai? Bela looked horrified on hearing that but still she was adamant on her decision as she did not care about the outcome of her decision and the same she conveyed to Madhu and said, "I don't care! Jo kuch bhi hoga main dekh lungi, but mujhe yaha ek minute bhi nehi rehna hai. Saying she left from there to her room and Madhu gave a deep sigh in a tensed manner as she already knew that one day this was going to happen and thinking about the storm that was slowly approaching their lives.

Maahir woke up from his passing-out' sleep at Kuhu-Rohit's apartment in the evening and came out of the room rubbing his eyes and punching his head. He looked in front and found Kuhu was standing there with a glass of lime water in her hand and Rohit was looking angrily as well as disturbed at him. Maahir took the glass from Kuhu and asked, "Main pura dupeher tum logo ke ghar par tha? Mujhe uthaya kyu nehi? Before Kuhu could reply, Rohit said, "Tujhe utha deta bhai to tu baaki ka wine bhi khatam kar leta. Teri behen ke vajah se mujhe pehle wine peene ke liye nehi milta tha aur ab jab mil sakta hai to tu khatam kar raha hai. Maahir gave a sip to the glass and replied, "Ok I'm sorry! Main tujhe ek brand new wine ki bottle gift kar dunga. Kuhu glared at Rohit angrily and then asked Maahir, "I hope abhi tumhaara nasha utar gaya hai? Maahir nodded his head and then Kuhu said, "Maahir be serious now! Abhi tumhe seriously koi na koi decision to lena hi hoga. Ab do naao par sawaar hokar tumhaari zindagi nehi chalne waali. If you want to be with Anu, jo ki main jaanti hu ke tum nehi rehna chahte ho par manna nehi chahte ho, then end everything with Bela legally aur agar tum ye chahte ho ke tumhe Bulbul chahiye to vo to tumhe bina Bela ke nehi mil sakti hai. For God's sake now make your mind!! Kyuki ek baar agar Bela chali gayi na Bulbul ko lekar waapas Canada to tum kuch nehi kar paaoge. Maahir sat down on the couch and said, "Bulbul ke liye main kuch bhi kar sakta hu... Agar uske liye mujhe uski ma ko jhelna bhi pare na to main vo bhi kar sakta hu, par vo to mere saath nehi rehna chahti hai na aur main uske jaisa hu bhi nehi, main Bela ko uski beti se hargiz dur nehi karunga. Lekin kya Bela madam ye baat samjhengi? Kuhu nodded her head and said, "Very good Maahir! Achche ya bure ka mujhe nehi pata lekin kamsekam tumne ek decision to liya and it's a very big achievement ab tumhe ek aur baat dhyaan mein rakhni hai ke tumhe yehi baat Anu ko bhi bataani paregi. Rohit interrupted in the middle and said, "Baby let him process everything slowly please! Kuhu said, "Main usko abhi kehne ke liye nehi keh rahi hu main usko main bas usko ye baat dhyaan mein rakhne ke liye keh rahi hu. Maahir concentrated on his lime juice when suddenly his phone started ringing. On taking the phone in hand, he found it to be Madhu's number.

Maahir got scared when Bulbul gave that ultimatum to him as he knew that Bulbul was capable to do anything if she makes up her mind.
