Star power definitely helps to make song hit but only by a fraction. Hit song is basically balanced combination of good lyrics, good compostion and good vocal. However there are songs too which are hit ( also awrard winner) despite having none of those entitity ( take a example of Himmesh songs.)

strangely, aamir did not seem such a person who would give out such a controversial comment. He is not a lay-man who is not aware that how the bollywood industry works. Written material, whether it is a script or lyric, formulate the basis of any film or song. Without the words how can the actors convey their expressions. He seems to ignore the power of language. Great actors are there because of their hit films and these hit films come from good scripts. If the written material was not there, how could anyone think of being successful with a flop story.
We listen to songs on radio, on our cell-phones, we do not watch the video all the time. Definitely the famous actor coming in the video of the song may attract some people, but the hit song is only that which has good theme-appropriate lyrics, rhythmic music and pleasant singing. So, I do not agree with Aamir Khan on this point.

In Aamir's world, a song MUST have an actor who dances and lip syncs to the song.

Lyrics and music are optional, though.

Also, books MUST have a nice shiny cover - pages, writing and text are all optional.

Javed Akhtar is such a silly old man - he thinks songs have to have lyrics and books have to have text. Bade puraane khayalaat ke hain Javed Saab.

Probably Aamir was thinking about 'Aati Kya Khandala' when he made that comment.

I think he just made the comment in a light mood... can be forgiven...

Actually, now a days, songs hardly have good lyrics.. Thats why I still listen to those beautiful songs sung by Mohd Rafi sir, Talat Mehmood sir, Lata ji ...
Now a days, signers voice, lyrics are not even given its due.. Singers are also not paying attention on riyaaz .. just on money publicity...
Can even one of these singers sing a song without any music at all like Rafi sir did even in films. No one is daring to even think of that now a days.

Vidhu Vinod Abuses Sonu Nigam

The royalty battle has thrown up a new set of adversaries - Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Sonu Nigam traded insults and the news is that they may never work together again, says a media report.
The committee formed to tackle the royalty issue between the producers and the music fraternity finds that the cause is being sidelined. After the much talked about face-off between Javed Akhtar and Aamir Khan, they're dealing with another war of words between Sonu Nigam and Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the report says.

Apparently, they got into a heated debate and Vidhu abused Sonu, who in turn retaliated spiritedly. Some members of the committee had to intervene to settle the fallout.
The report quoting a source said, "Sonu proposed that the producer should keep 50 per cent of the royalties, while the music director and the singer should keep 25 per cent each. Vidhu disagreed and stated that the music directors or singers should take on the losses as well. When Sonu stuck to his guns at the meeting held at a suburban five star, Vidhu lost his cool and abused him. He told Sonu to 'f*** off', and a shocked Sonu was visibly upset. He told Vidhu to mind his language.
An incensed Vidhu said that Sonu is making so much money and most of his songs are from his (Vidhu's) films, so he should give some of the amount to him. Finally, Vidhu said that he will not work with Sonu. The singer shot back that it is entirely Vidhu's loss. The matter wouldn't have ended there had Madhur Bhandarkar and Ken Ghosh not intervened."
Sonu Nigam gave us his side of the story. He said, "We are not supposed to talk about what has happened, but since you called, I do not wish to negate it. Vidhu got a little excited and he has the habit of speaking in that manner. I don't want to hold it against him as I have heard worse abuses from Vidhu. All I can say is that main saste mein chhoot gaya."
When asked about his reaction to Vidhu's decision about not working with him again, Sonu said, "That's my decision completely. I know that I am a good singer and no one is doing a favour to anyone. Yahan koi kissi ko banata nahin hai. We all are students of this art and if someone does not want to acknowledge anyone's work, it's their problem." Sonu finally added, "After the meeting, he came up to me and the matter got resolved. Vidhu is known to be like this and uske moonh se gaali nikal gayee, toh humne bhi de diya jawab. However, he is known for this, so I won't hold it against him." Vidhu Vinod Chopra was unavailable for comment.

Here's what Sonu Nigam thinks about the royalty issue. He makes some valid points in the video.
'xobile' you should watch this video because your views in another topic regarding the independent music are quite similar to Sonu's.

Wow! Thanks brahmabulji! That's a great video and Sonu has made some very valid points.

I'm looking for that huuge post I wrote about independent music in India - it seems to have got lost somewhere.

There are two things on which I disagree with Sonu.

1. Movies DO help music as well. Movies give a whole 'backstory' for a song and they spend lavishly on song picturisation. All this DOES help the music to sell. In fact, that is why film music is the best selling music in India - it has the support of movies, which act as huge advertising campaigns for songs.

2. Singers should not demand 25% of royalties. The people who conceptualise, develop and eventually create the song are the Music Director and Lyricist. If you give royalties to a singer, then you should give royalties to the guitarist, violinist, pianist, tabla player too. It's all about differentiating between the creator and the performer. Mohd Rafisaab also agreed with this point of view (that only MDs and lyricists should get royalties) but Lataji always insisted that singers ought to get royalties, too. I think singers should get less than 10% of the royalties of a song.

In the West, singers like Beyonce do get royalties, even though they don't always write their own songs. The reason for that is that Beyonce appears in her music videos - thus creating business for the song. Sonu Nigam doesn't come on screen and perform Kal Ho Na Ho.

But overall, Sonu is very correct - give the musicians their due and stop hogging the profits of their work! More power to the great composers, singers and lyricists of India! Amir and VVC should accept the work of musicians and apologize!
