An unshaven look is the 'in' thing.
This is one hair-raising tale, of Bollywood heroes and their ostentatious fashion statements. Any wonder every young guy swears by their style? Taking a cue from the latest look being donned by actors like SRK, Emraan Hashmi, Abhishek Bachchan and Tusshar Kapoor, maintaining an unshaven look is the 'in' thing.
As the fashion conscious youngsters follow their style gurus for that drop dead gorgeous face, KT finds out what's making the city blokes take to the beard with a vengeance.
Shashwat Juneja, a BBA student, is in complete awe of Emraan Hashmi's new look, in the film Awarapan.
I'm not particularly fond of the actor, but I love his experiments with his hair and face. That tousled, unshaven look is certainly very stylish. I've tried to get a similar look, says Shashwat, who admits to having faced opposition from his parents who didn't welcome the new him at all!
But Juneja is quite happy. It's a temporary look, the day I find something more interesting, I will change it, he says nonchalantly.
Amit Bhalla, also pursuing an undergraduate course, seems to have given up the shaving cream and razor for good.
I love the light shave, a la SRK, he says with a wink and adds, It makes me look more mature. For Amit at least, this this is the right age to be experimenting with one's looks. After a certain age it's too late to be doing this kind of stuff, he opines.
And if you thought maintaining that rugged look is a simple task, you can't be more wrong. According to the experts, it is far more complicated than that clean-shaven look!
There are quite a few takers for that rugged look, but it's not an easy job, I must say, reveals hairstylist Sylvie and goes on to explain why: You've got to get it just right - you have to look rugged without looking shabby.
You've got to trim the beard almost everyday and be careful your hairstyle matches it too.
Beautician Preeti Thapar can't agree more when she says, An unshaven look requires proper maintenance or you'll just end up looking untidy. Besides, not everyone can carry it off. So one must not blindly follow a Bollywood or Hollywood actor's style.
If actors weren't enough, even singers and music composers are making a style statement with that unshaven look. Prashant Bajpai, working in a finance company preferred his morning brush with the blade until Himesh Reshammiya, decided to have a makeover.
I was very particular about my morning shave but when I saw Himesh Reshammiya grow that beard, I decided to try the look myself and it has worked well for me. It makes my face look thinner and I'm enjoying the compliments coming my way these days, he says with a laugh.
