Anchored to the job

(Posted on 22 June 2007)

Hosting talent hunts that are expected to double up as tear jerking, heavy
on sentiment reality shows can be taxing.

Veterans to the game, like Annu Kapoor and Shaan, have had to learn the rules of the new game, and newbies like Aditya Narayan, Himani and Juhi Parmar have entered the arena knowing that much more than just anchoring Antaksharis, would be expected of them.

To their credit, most of the hosts have shaped up well. Particularly Juhi Parmar, who took to Star One, and now Star Plus' Antakshari, like a duck to water. When she shifted gears a few months ago, to turn from tearful soap heroine to a garishly made up co-host to Annu Kapoor, there were sniggers about her loud outfits and apprehensions that the formidable Annu would outshine her, as he did all his earlier co-hosts. Some months down the line, Juhi's outfits have stayed as garish, but her stature on the show has grown by leaps and bounds. She now leads the proceedings on the show, and with an energy and enthusiasm that's infectious. Now in its season for youngsters, Juhi has been quick to bond with the tots, dishing out her 'jadoo ki
jhappis' and advice liberally. To his credit, Annu has adopted the role of pater familias, a restrained avatar of his earlier garrulous self. His trove of music and film knowledge still helps in the rounds he conducts almost extempore, but Juhi clearly holds her own.

Juhi's Kumkum co-star Hussain has been, meanwhile, hosting another talent hunt, Indian Idol on Sony. But while the Aman Verma - Mini Mathur hosting team in the earlier Idol seasons used to sparkle with energy, the Hussain-Mini combo is a bit tired. Perhaps, we should wait for the final rounds to see if they can up their energy levels a bit.

If you happen to close your eyes and just soak in the voice of the host on Zee's new season of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge, you might just get fooled into thinking that Shaan was back on the show. Young host Aditya Narayan's voice and style of talking is so much like Shaan's, you wonder if it's been a tad intentional on the channel's part to choose someone who sounds like the guy who deserted his post for Star's Voice of India. To his credit, Aditya, who's a newcomer to hosting, does a competent job when it comes to handling moody participants and moodier judges. You need to be really good to handle celeb judges who often take pot shots at each other, indulge in mud slinging and threaten to walk out midway.

Which is what is about to happen on Star's Voice of India, if reports leaked to the print media are to be believed. Producer Gajendrra Singh manages to keep viewer interest alive by encouraging bickering among his judges, and now he's needled Aadesh Srivastav, who objected to Alka Yagnik being called 'melody queen', who's now threatened to quit the show. Please. Yagnik, Srivasatav and the rest are respected names in the industry who should not allow such ratings inspired gimmicks to mar their reputations. At the end of the day, it's only the channel that's going to laugh its way to the bank.

Sunita Williams - the weekend special

With Sunita Williams' return to earth getting delayed by the day, news channels did little else the whole of this week but count down the hours to her projected arrival, and then restart their timers, when bad weather rescheduled the landing. If Aaj Tak went to Ahmedabad to chat with Williams' distant relatives, NDTV and Sahara reached Karnal to get a soundbite from B D Chawla, father of Kalpana Chawla, another NASA astronaut who lost her life in the Columbia disaster five years ago. Coverage of NASA headquarters, foggy California weather and bobbing astronauts inside the spaceship dominated news rooms through the week. And, if the weather continues to be bad, will dominate the entire weekend programming as well.

Channel [V]'s Get Gorgeous season four inches closer to the finale, with the finalists chosen this week, to be flown to an exotic location for the final rounds. This week, jury Jatin, Suparna and Pia checked out the girls'
videos, passed some very candid comments on each, and finally shortlisted the selected ones. VJ Pia then placed calls to each candidate to break the good or bad news. The girls, nervous with anticipation, were struggling to
keep a presentable face before the camera that had descended on their homes,
while they answered Pia's calls. This was just the beginning. The real grill will begin next week when they begin the final grind. Still, the episodes seem decent enough, to an untutored eye like mine. Wonder why [V] put up posters for the show that said 'moral police...sue us?" Just for publicity?

Couch potato tip - If you like Himesh Reshammiya, you are in for a treat. He's MTV's star on the hot seat this month, and on Bombay Talkies on NDTV, and perhaps elsewhere too, now that his film is releasing. If you don't like Himesh, just turn the TV off. You have no option.

Himesh asks the Deols to back off

By Subhash K. Jha, Mumbai, June 22: This could be the clash which may turn into the crash of the titans.

Himesh Reshammiya's acting debut "Aap Ka Surroor" has unexpected competition from the fringes.

The Deols have decided to release their ambitious joint-family saga "Apne" Friday (June 29), the same day the much-awaited "Aap Ka Surroor" will make it to the cinemas.

Is this just the 'guroor' (pride) to counter Himesh's "Suroor"? It looks like it.

Himesh personally requested the Deols to re-schedule their magnum opus. But the Deols paid no heed.

"Yes, I did request them to come on another Friday. But they refused," says the capped composer. "I respect their decision. I'm sure they've their own reasons for coming on June 29.

"I think our film is very small compared to theirs. It stars Dharamji and his two sons, which means it has 300 percent box-office clout whereas my film has an untried singer-turned-actor whom the whole world is waiting to rip apart."

However, Himesh has a trump card.

"'Apne' is apna film too. I've done the music score for that film. And I'm very proud of my songs. Yes, I do admit I'm partial to 'Aap Ka Surroor'. It's very special to me on many counts."

He pauses to consider the repercussions. "I think June 29 is going to be a very decisive Friday. Not only mine and the Deols' film but Mahesh Bhatt's 'Awaarapan' is also being released.

"That film too is special to me. It stars my friend Emran Hashmi ... I think June 29 will disprove the myth that only one film at the most does well on any Friday."

It's not about aesthetics, or critical preference. It's not about liking one film over the other. It's about how Jhoom Barabar Jhoom's failure is fantastic news for the Hindi film industry, in general.

And about how we should all pray that Himesh Reshammiya's film is a super-success.

Assuming you're not nodding in agreement just yet, allow me to make my case. Read on.

***

I have nothing personal against Yash Raj Films. They've made some fine movies over the years, Yash Chopra [Images] and son Adi have contributed immeasurably to Indian cinema, and it's commendable. It's also just turned into a big, flashy bar of soap.

The last watchable Yash Raj movie was Saathiya, Shaad Ali's warm, loyal remake of Mani Ratnam's Alaipaayuthe. This was back in 2002. Over the last five years, Bollywood's biggest banner has started taking the audience for granted, churning out stars, locales, cliche and camp. It's all merely packaging.

Save for Sanjay Gadhvi's unashamed Dhoom testosterone, the roster's been dismal.

Hum Tum, Veer-Zaara, Neal N Nikki, Salaam Namaste, Fanaa. Films without plots or soul. Then there are the fatally flawed Kabul Express and Bunty Aur Babli. What's the point of it all?

Money, of course.

Their camp has gotten stronger (and, appropriately, campier) and way richer. They are the guys who reportedly twist multiplex arms to extract higher ticket prices and allegedly force smaller filmmakers to shuffle release dates. And if rumours are to be believed, they don't pay their stars -- it's all about visibility, the stars gladly making a bundle hiking their stage and endorsement fees.

They are an influential media presence, and there are few film critics who will dare totally trash a Yash Raj film. The otherwise outspoken Mumbai film journalist circle, at a Yash Raj press screening, clears their throats with some discretion. No matter how the films do, they are labeled superhits -- yes, even Neal N Nikki [Images]. Please.

Upto a decade ago, crassness and melodrama used to be justified condescendingly as stuff that would work 'in the interiors.' Today, an SRK [Images]/Amitabh item song, a London [Images] backdrop, and crores spent on fashion over script, are justified as stuff that would work 'in the multiplexes.' Or worse yet, 'overseas.'

YR Films believe packaging is what our educated metropolitan youth and Indian Diaspora demand. So they shove the repetitive silliness down our throats, packing enough first-weekend shows to ensure some sort of profit.

Thankfully, the audience isn't biting. They've had enough. This year, Ta Ra Rum Pum [Images] and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom have been declared monstrosities. Too awful to watch, audiences have given the films a thumbs-down. Even the more 'diplomatic' critics haven't been able to find anything to praise.

Mr and Mr Chopra, sit up and take notice. You made Silsila, you made DDLJ. Work harder.

***

Now, why the Himesh love? And no, it's not just because I haven't shaved for a week.

I'm not a fan of the baseball-capped singer. I don't have any crazy expectations from Aap Ka Surroor: The Moviee: The Real Luv Story. The first time I heard the name, I winced -- now they're carrying the numerology superstition onto English, and its ridiculous. I mean, Moviee. The promos are almost smug in their insanity, with names like Ruby James (for Mallika Sherawat) and bizarre prison scenes. This one's going to be sheer madness -- and Himesh knows it.

But it's not for you, city reader.

It's a film aiming at the auto-rickshawwallahs -- with a whole promo going blissfully over the top declaring that intention -- and at the janta theatres that burst into mad applause the minute the nasal voice screeches over the speakers. If you've never been there, it's a riot. Forget the Amitabhs and Akshays and those ubiquitous Khans, the crowds respond insanely as soon as a Himesh promo comes on.

Also, there is the matter of sheer bravado. The singer has often been dismissed as a two (dozen, at least) hit wonder, but there is a crazy consistency to his sound translating into success. After outselling the Khans at his stage shows across America, he's now put all his eggs in one basket. Some reports peg this as being Bollywood's costliest film. Even if that's a tall claim, the singer's backers have invested huge, and the film flopping could write off the whiny hit-maker for good.

Still, the point remains. Why the Himesh film? Why should we, in all consciousness, want a film to succeed while we imagine it'll be near-unwatchable? Sure, it could turn out fun, but odds are that it won't. Why should we want this Moviee to hit it big?

***

Because...

Because it's been a mad year, awful for the box office. Two high-profile Yash Raj Films have bombed. Amitabh Bachchan's [Images] had three of his career's best performances -- Eklavya, Nishabd and Cheeni Kum -- and only one of the three (CK) has managed to salvage its budget. The biggest hit of the year so far is Bheja Fry, a film costing Rs 55 lakhs going on to make about 7 crores.

Imagine then, a film coming out from a new banner, starring a new actor -- and trumping the industry.

There will be complete chaos. The star-system will be rattled, the producers will be shaken, distributors won't know what hit them and there will be complete unpredictability in the industry, giving independent cinema a tremendous boost -- for if no one knows what'll work, anything could!

Himesh has the opportunity to upset the Bollywood apple-cart. And that's a delicious thought.
