Toontown Rhapsody

lBISWADEEP GHOSH Times News Network /TIMES NEWS NETWORK
Himesh Reshammiya's animated character HR2 is all set to visit the small screen.
Ha ha ha ha. Then, a pause. Ha ha ha ha. Then, a pause once again. Sitting on a couch, you stare at the television, as something unusual unfolds in front of your eyes. What you see, and laugh at, is your animated version that talks-walks-sings in a funny manner that has, yes, something sunny about it. Suddenly, your brother walks in, and sits right next to you. Ha ha ha ha. He takes off too."Bro, you look like a pucca clown," he says, his lips crumbling into a grin.
Now, do you find that funny? If so, you have a sense of humour. But, if not, that is not surprising either. The reason: millions in the big world that we inhabit can laugh at the expense of others. But, not everyone can handle a joke on him or her with grace and comfort. Singer-turned-actor turned-cartoon character Himesh Reshammiya seems to relish humour though. The idol of millions who adore his music - and questioned by a few who firmly believe that his nose sings for him - Himesh will be now seen as HR2, a character who will figure in a music video. While the video will go on air on June 10, the character will also announce the date of release of Himesh's first film as an actor .
Why has HR2 come into being? The character is, quite obviously, a hype-enhancing marketing tool. Himesh has been hitting the headlines regularly, and for all kinds of reasons, including his statements, dress sense, and music of course.Very soon, that list will have HR2: you can also call it Headline Rocker 2!
Jhalak Dikhla Ja ...

Celebs have a variety of expectations , while they wait for a jhalak of the latest Himesh offering . Manish Raisinghani, TV actor , says, "I am hoping that his cartoon character has his trademark cap, beard, jacket and low neck t-shirt . Also, the character should not speak with his mouth but his nose." Archana Vijaya, model-turned-VJ , says, "I did get a glimpse of Himesh's animated character . I think it's quite funny." Padmini Kolhapure, actor, believes , "Himesh is going with the trend, since animation is really popular right now." A news-manufacturing machine of sorts, Himesh has come up with a surprise expected by none. As of now, nobody should be blamed for singing, "HR2 aaja aaja aajaa ."
Headline2, U2?
Caps off to the guy for starting a a new trend of film marketing in India. Having said that, will celebs be happy to turn into cartoon characters? Mandira Bedi, actor-anchor , says, "I would definitely like to be a cartoon character . Unfortunately, there aren't too many superhero characters based on women. But, if I had a choice, I would have loved to be a dog, ideally Snoopy. I really like his attitude towards life, and his equation with Charlie Brown."
Raisinghani says, "I wouldn't mind if the cartoon character is as interesting as I am. There is a popular cartoon character called Shin chan, which is very energetic and mischievous."
As HR2 is about to enter our lives, what kind of reactions will it evoke? What we do know is that people will check it out, and that includes many who have a serious problem with his singing nose.

When singers put on an act
8 Jun, 2007 l 0000 hrs IST
lPRIYANKA TIWARI /TIMES NEWS NETWORK
With Himesh Reshammiya joining the bandwagon of singers-turned-actors in his debut film, we explore the trend.
While many actors have tested their vocal chords in films and quite a few of them have succeeded also, it doesn't seem to work the other way round. Here's a recap: Singer Sonu Nigam tried his hand at acting in films like Nigaahein and Love in Nepal , but failed to prove his calibre. Shaan acted in Daman directed by Kalpana Lajmi but failed miserably. Much before them, singercomposer RD Burman acted in Bhoot Bangla (1965) and Pyar Ka Mausam (1967), but couldn't create the same magic as he did with his music.

And now, it's the turn of composersinger Himesh Reshammiya, who's all set to make his acting debut with the film Aap Ka Surroor - The Film. As Himesh joins the bandwagon of singersturned-actors, LT tries to find out why singers fail to make a mark as actors, and whether they should stick to singing only?

Singer Udit Narayan feels that it's only Kishore da (Kishore Kumar) who was successful in both acting and singing. "If one can do justice to both the fields, he's eligible to pursue both," maintains Udit, who has acted in a Nepali film. "It happened while I was struggling and had no work. My wife advised me to act in the film, which eventually became a super-duper hit.
However , the film's success had nothing to do with me, as I wasn't the lead actor. But soon I realised that acting wasn't my cup of tea," says the singer, adding that he still has offers from Bhojpuri, Bengali and Malayali films, but he's not interested . "I take pride in what I'm doing currently. All the singers who go in for acting should first figure out whether it's their forte or not."

Even actor-turned-singer Raageshwari feels that one must know where one's potential lies. "Though I got good films, my acting career didn't take off. So, I took to singing. One should do what makes him/her happy. Though there's always scope for improvement, anything you do will be a good learning experience," avers Raageshwari.

Singer Shaan can't agree more when he says, "I tried to act in a film but singing is my first choice. Sometimes one does things just to try. It's risky but there's a thrill too! If things work well, good for you and if they don't , it's a lesson learnt."

Unlike Udit, Raageshwari, Shaan, Sonu, and now Himesh, some singers choose to limit their roles in films to guest appearance, and that too 'as themselves' . Like Pankaj Udhas appeared in the film Naam singing his evergreen song Chiththi Aai Hai, Daler Mehndi sang Oye Hoye Ki Kudiyan in Arjun Pandit, and Sade Naal Rahoge Te with Amitabh Bachchan in Mrityudata and Pritam (Chakroborty) of Dhoom fame was seen with his band in Life in a Metro.

Are these singers averse to acting? Denies Pritam as he says, "Everyone is free to give it a shot but it has to be an individual choice. Like, I'm not interested in acting." But isn't it an attempt to cash in on their popularity? "Singers who turn to acting, do put their fame at stake. If they don't perform well, they face the flak," opines Pritam. Concludes Pankaj Udhas, "It's true that most of the singers who've tried acting, haven't done really well, but that doesn't mean singers should confine themselves to singing only. If they are interested and are getting a chance there is no harm in trying."

SINGERS WHO'VE TRIED ACTING

Udit Narayan: Nepalifilm Kusumey Rumal

Kumar Sanu: A Bengali film in 1990

Palash Sen (of Euphoria): Meghna Gulzar's Filhaal

Baba Sehgal: Miss 420 (1998)

Roop Kumar Rathod and wife Sonali Rathod did a cameo in the Aman Verma starrer flick Koi Hai...

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK

Babul Supriyo is all set make his acting debut in a Bengali film to be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Tarun Mazumdar

Himmesh's father comes to wish him on the sets, but is locked up for 3 hours

Himmesh Reshammiya's surprise on this Friday's Sa Re Ga Ma Pa was almost ruined thanks to guest judge Khayyamji. During the special episode, Himmesh's father, Bipin Reshammiya, was on the sets to surprise his son.

However, maha guru Khayyamji was so excited with Himmesh's performance that he almost blurted out that his dad was in the studio. The stressed unit who had planned this surprise so carefully had to finally lock Himesh's father in a room away from Khayyamji and tell him that he had already left the show, so that he would believe that and not reveal the surprise before it was time.

Aditya Narayan, host of the show, narrates the stressful incident: "Himmesh was unaware that his father was coming on the sets. We had planed a surprise for him as it was a special episode but Khayyamji was going to break the suspense about Bipinji. In fact he did that when he asked me that call Bipinji because Himmesh was performing well. He said that during the first half hour of shooting. Thankfully Himesh didn't notice.

I started to sweat because I thought that my big plan was going to result in a flop show. We told Khayyamji that Bipin came for some time but he left. We had to lock Bipinji in a room for three hours so that Khayaamji would not see him. Khayyamji wanted to go to the bathroom every half an hour."

Finally Bipin was set free from his confinement and everything went according to plan.

"When I called Bipinji in the end of the show Himmesh was so happy and excited that he immediately came on stage. Then Bipinji started narrating Himmesh's childhood incidents like how Himmesh used to be so kanjus when he was a kid. He used to save 10 rupees by walking back to his home from school. Then he would give that money to his father. On the sets, we had bhel with Bipinji. It was a lot of fun."

The incident left Himmesh in tears as his dad got nostalgic.
"Himmesh started crying when his father described how he lost his elder son. He told us how Himmesh promised him that he would make his father proud one day. Himmesh was just eleven years old at the time.

His father also related incidents that nobody knew about. We asked our other mentors to mention incidents as well and they told of how Himmesh forcefully participated in his school's singing competition and was awarded first place for it."

Unlike his tough guy image, Aditya insists that Himmesh is a softie on the inside:
"Himmesh is a very emotional person and he not at all as rude as people think. He is the kind of person who never shows his emotions to others. That's why he sometimes behaves rudely to people."

Himmesh's special episode will air tomorrow at 10 PM. This episode also features Himmesh making a point of how contestants should sing contemporary songs when Mouli Dave sings "mayya mayya".
