Himesh Reshammiya may get Rs 14 crore for Zee show

HIS detractors are going to hate this. After getting away with nasal singing and repetitive scores, Himesh Reshammiya is now laughing all the way to the bank.

When Reshammiya joined the jury of Zee TV's Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005 as one among the four judges (along with fellow music directors Ismail



Darbar, Adesh Shrivastav and Jatin-Lalit), he was not much of a name to reckon with. Sources reveal for an appearance of four months on the show, he was first offered just Rs 20 lakh. (After the show's success, all paychecks were upgraded).

Two years later, post the chartbusters and a lead film role, Reshammiya is judge again. For Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007, the talent hunt that also features musical mega stars like Bappi Lahiri, Darbar and Vishal-Shekhar, we're told Reshammiya is being paid an estimated Rs 14 crore. The deal also includes stage performances at the various cities the show will travel to.

The Bollywood grapevine insists that music sensation Himesh Reshammiya plays his cards very close to his chest. Apparently Himesh's wife(he's reportedly been married for over a decade) used to visit a suburban beauty parlour quite regularly. And the simple, straight-forward lady talked about her music director husband. However when Himesh got wind of this, he feared his wife may spill some of his own beauty secrets, so he forbade her from talking about him or their young son. And the wife stopped going to the parlour altogether.

One look at the number of films arriving on last Friday before the mid-year comes to close, June 29th, and the question that automatically pops up is - Aisi Bhi Kya Jaldi Hai?

Believe it or not but there are as many as five films vouching for June 29th slot. Well, the number in itself may not be considered a big deal since there have been instances when 4-5 films have arrived on the same day, gone Friday being the recent example when KYA LOVE STORY HAI, MY BOLLYWOOD BRIDE, AUR PAPPU PAAS HO GAYA and PANGAA NA LO came together.

Nevertheless, if one looks closely, these films are a mixed bag of medium and low budget films. But if we look at the films coming on June 29th, each of the 5 films is a biggie with their budget running in crores.

These films are AAP KA SURROOR - THE MOVIEE, APNE, AWAARAPAN, CASH and KAAFILA. Sheer star presence and magnitude of the film's canvas gives a very good idea about the huge budgets of the film. Also each of the films is special for its cast and crew due to various reasons.

While AAP KA SURROOR - THE MOVIEE is a film shot extensively abroad with Himesh Reshammiya making his debut as a lead actor, APNE brings the three Deols - Dharmendra, Sunny and Bobby - together for the first time.

AWAARAPAN is the biggest film ever for the Bhatts with Emraan Hashmi towering the starcast whereas CASH is a multistarrer that brings Ajay Devgan back to his action-man ways. Last but not the least Sunny Deol starrer KAAFILA is a gigantic film with its shooting schedules spread across continents.

Looking at the credentials as above, it is quite obvious that each of these five films would want to avoid a clash and would be waiting for the other to make a move towards revisiting its release date.

Mallika swings to Mehbooba

Himesh Reshammiya has not only managed to convince Mallika Sherawat to do a song for his debut film Aap Kaa Surroor — The Movie — The Real Luv Story (Gaahh! That title!), but he's also got her to groove on a remixed version of Sholay's Mehbooba for a promotional video.

Interestingly, this isn't the first time Himesh is reworking the Mehbooba number. Earlier, Ram Gopal Verma had roped him in to work on the track for his adaptation of Sholay. But Himesh says his version is a tribute to RD Burman, though it won't be a part of the film.

"It was Bhushan Kumar's idea to record the cover version of Mehbooba with Ashaji (Bhosle) and me. This will be a bonus track in the soundtrack of the film," says Himesh.

The music composer-turned-actor is slated to shoot the video with Mallika in early May. "The final schedule of the film should be in the last week of May. I am definitely looking forward to shooting with Mallika. However, we still have to figure out who the choreographer will be," he adds.

Though Himesh isn't saying it, he has recorded a song with Sunidhi Chauhan to be picturized on Mallika and Himesh.

Why Mallika's presence was kept under wraps? "She was signed on from the start. But we didn't announce her name. I never intended to hide her presence in my film," exclaims Himesh from Bangkok. "If all goes well Aap Kaa Surroor will make me the first singing star since Kishore Kumar. And why would I feel insecure about Mallika's presence? The truth is she's playing a negative role, a vamp. She plays a strong character. We wanted to introduce the film's leading lady first. It was nothing but a marketing strategy to announce my leading lady Riaa's name first. There was no intention to create any secrecy about Mallika's presence."

Himesh is clear that the film is essentially his vehicle. The rest of the cast is incidental. "Why should I feel insecure about anyone else in the cast? I play this rock star who gets trapped in a mystery. It's a love story within a thriller format. I have a very performance-oriented role. I have to prove myself. I know people are bitching about me, ' Bada chala actor ban-ne'. Among singers only Kishore Kumar has been successful as an actor. I want to repeat Kishore-da's success. And for that, I couldn't do anything half-baked. I need everyone's blessings."

Himesh is very happy with the way his debut film has shaped up. "It's turned out exactly the way we had hoped. We shot in completely-untried locations all over Germany. We shot seventy percent of the film in Germany, and the rest in Bangkok except for a small portion in Goa. Vijay Taneja has been a hand-on producer. And my director Prashant Chaddha has really guided me in front of the camera. We had worked together on my music videos. Now he'll prove himself as a feature-film director."

He pauses between shots to say, "Every actor praises his own film. I'm doing the same. But on June 29 we'll get to see doodh ko doodh pani ka pani."

There's the fear of falling flat on his face. "You can't predict destiny."

Back home, Himesh's music in Shakalaka Boom Boom and Red couldn't salvage the films. "But the music worked, and I'm happy. In Namastye London, both my music and the film worked. Now I'll divide my time between music and acting, regardless of how Aap Kaa Surroor fares at the box office. But my acting will always be connected with music."

Himesh returns to India in the middle of May. "But until then I don't have any time to play games about the film's cast," he chuckles.
