Indian of the Year: Showbiz greats
New Delhi: The year 2006 was a block buster year for the Indian film industry and stars were under the spotlight for a variety of reasons.
However, CNN-IBN's list of nominees for the Best Entertainer of the Year includes:
Shah Rukh Khan: To keep the new Don out of the list is not only difficult but it is impossible "Mushkil hi nahi namumkin hai!" as Shah Rukh himself says. He may have had only two average hits including Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna and Don under his belt last year but he has topped it all by replacing the original Don, Amitabh Bachchan in Kaun Banega Crorepati. And he is getting paid a lakh per minute for the show
Priyanka Chopra: Shah Rukh Khan's co star in Don, the steaming Priyanka Chopra has the nation's male population dancing to her tune. Voted as the sexiest woman in Asia, she brings talent and lots of oomph to the screen. She is also the most searched Indian actress on the Internet. Priyanka definitely deserves to be on our lists of entertainers of the year.
Himesh Reshamiya: You can love him. You can hate him. But you just can't switch him off. This 'nasaled wonder' took playback singing in Bollywood to a higher note. Last year alone Himesh Reshmiya gave music for a whopping 25 films and 23 out of them were hits. With every possible award except the Grammy's under his belt, Reshmiya has made it to our list of nominees.
Aamir Khan: While his performance in Fanaa was great, it was Rang De Basanti that made Aamir Khan to becoming an icon from an actor. The rebel act resonated in the 'Justice for Jessica' campaign and the actor took his activism to the streets lending his star status to the long ignored 'Narmada Bachao Andolan' besides offering opinion on the Gujarat riots. Needless to say, the media never left his side/
Raj Kumar Hirani: He has created one of the most lovable characters on the Indian screen in their second coming. Munna and Circuit managed to sell Gandhism to a somewhat cynical Indian audience. But the credit goes to Raj Kumar Hirani the writer director of Lage Raho Munna Bhai to have Gandhi on key chains, t-shirts and above all on everyone's mind.
Gajendra Singh: Last and definitely not the least in our list of nominees is the Father of reality TV in India. The primary credit goes to Gajendra Singh for introducing the concept of talent hunt shows in India Sa Re Ga Ma Pa that was launched 11 years ago. It is still going strong and has spawned a multi-million reality TV industry.
These are Indians who have given a new face to entertainment in their own way. Who do you think fits the bill for this very special award? SMS IOTY to 2622 or vote here
