By Taran Adarsh, October 24, 2006 - 06:09 IST
24th October is an important day in the life of Subhash Ghai. It happens to be his marriage anniversary. And Ghai makes it a point to start a new film on this date year after year. Well, Ghai will be officially announcing not two/three/four, but SEVEN films later in the day.
We at IndiaFM bring you the news first, even before the official announcement…
The first two projects will be directed by Ghai himself. The first to go on floors is BLACK N WHITE, which will be produced under the banner of Mukta Searchlight Films. It will be shot in one schedule, from 21st November, and will introduce a new lead man -- Anurag Sinha, a diploma holder from FTII, Pune. Anil Kapoor will play a stellar role in this film.
The second film Ghai will direct will star Salman Khan and two top heroines. To be made under the banner of Mukta Arts Entertainment, the film will be shot from mid-April to mid-September 2007 and will be released in Diwali 2007. A.R. Rahman will score the music of this film. "It's budgeted at Rs. 30 crores," Ghai reveals.
Nagesh Kukunoor will direct the third film, which is titled BOMBAY TO BANGKOK. The fourth project, to be directed by Kukunoor's chief assistant Shashi Silgudia, is titled CYCLE KICK and will go on floors next month, in November.
Anees Bazmee, Abbas-Mustan and Anurag Basu [GANGSTER] will direct one film each, all big-budget ventures. These three films will be launched in 2007. The cast and credits of these ventures are under finalization.
"It's high time we focus on good stories and scripts than mere proposal making," Ghai states.
Thanks for posting Sudha.
Music Review
Finally! The soundtrack of K. Shashilal Nair's film, One 2 Ka 4, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, and Jackie Shroff, has been released. And the music is quite worth the wait. Composed by music maestro A. R. Rahman, the album features eight tracks, sung by the likes of Alka Yagnik, Sonu Nigam, Lata Mangeshkar, Udit Narayan, and many others. With lyrics by the late Majrooh Sultanpuri and Mehboob, the album is another excellent effort by Rahman.
The album begins with the haunting, yet immediately catchy, Khamoshiyan Gungunane Lagi, sung by Sonu Nigam and Lata Mangeshkar. Never has Lata sounded so beautiful. Rahman has extracted such youthful vocals from Lata Mangeshkar, a woman whose singing skills have yet to be surpassed by another. Lately, her voice in several other films sounded a bit aged, but she is back with the same fervor that she demonstrated in her heydays. As expected, Sonu Nigam sounds great, proving his vocal versatility and genius. The album features two versions of this song, one slightly different from the other in terms of lyrics, which have been penned by Mehboob. The song reminded me a lot of Rahman's composition for Pukar, Kismat Se Tum Humko. The next song is Sona Nahi Na Sahi, sung by duo Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik. This is Alka's fourth time working with A.R. Rahman (after Kabhi Na Kabhi, Taal, and Zubeidaa), and she sounds amazing. Her voice is mellifluous as always, while Udit Narayan is quite captivating himself. The song is a love song, but with an A. R. Rahman stamp that makes it sound unique. Next is I Am Sorry, which features Udit Narayan, Srinivas, and Poonam Bhatia. The music for this composition is awesome, although the lyrics themselves may not be that extraordinary. Rahman has done a wonderful job with Udit Narayan's voice in this song, which has been rearranged to sound as if two Udit Narayans are singing during the refrain. Poonam Bhatia is competent, and her voice sounds a bit like other Rahman protgs like Mahalakshmi and Swarnlatha. It is nice to see Rehman introducing new singers to the Hindi music scene. Srinivas's voice is also nice to listen to, but is overshadowed by Udit's far superior voice. The fourth song is Haye Dil Ki Bazi Laga, another love song sung by Alka Yagnik and Sonu Nigam. Sonu Nigam does a fine job with the song, making it another Rahman gem. Alka sounds nice, but at times, sounds as if she is stretching her vocals. Sonu Nigam accompanies Rageshwari in the next song, Osaka Muraiya. Don't ask what the title of the song means because I have no clue. The music is nice, but the lyrics are average (beauty meri evergreen). Sonu again demonstrates his versatility, which is basically what saves this song from spelling doom. Basically, this track is purely a situational song, which probably sounds better when seen on screen. Sukhwinder Singh joins Shaan in Allay Allay, which is another situational song. This one is pleasant on the ears and is fun to listen to. Both singers complement one another so well that sometimes their voices blend right in with each other. The chorus features a bunch of kids, which makes sense considering the film stars four kids. Finally, the album ends with the title song, One Two Ka Four, sung by Clinton. Although the music is nowhere near the brilliance of the title song in Rangeela or even the Thump of Daud, it is still way above average. The music has nice beats, with a few lyrics here and there. Actually, the music has been used in the film's television advertisements, adding to the overall appeal of the ads and making them appear much more catchy.2001 has begun with a bang, brought to you by A. R. Rahman. The music for K. Shashilal Nair's "One Two Ka Four" is excellent, especially the track sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Sonu Nigam. Rehman proves once again that with his music, one can never fail to be excited. The soundtrack is definitely worth a buy. Hopefully, the film will be an even bigger treat, which would be nice for the very appealing Shah Rukh Khan-Juhi Chawla duo.

This is another one of Rahman's older albums dubbed into Hindi. It seems A.R.Rahman has been rather 'environmentally friendly' by recycling some his 'South' tunes for Hindi films! Remember "Yaaron Sun Lo Zara" from RANGEELA? Well, we're treated to the same tune on this album in the form of "Babu Lo Chal Gaya" sung by S.P.Balasubrahmaniam, Kavita Krishnamurthy & A.R.Rahman. The song is sung well, but after hearing the 'Rangeela' version this one sounds a little stale. (Ironically, Rangeela's was the copied version). Anyway, put this fact aside and the album is quite enjoyable. Mehboob has resurrected the "Chumma De" lyric which is brought to life splendidly by Rahman's funky rhythm (although Rahman has used his standard stock of sample software to create this rhythm!)
"Dil Se Dil Zara Mila Hi Lo" is an odd rural creation that takes a bit of getting used to. The interesting thing here is that this is Alka Yagnik's first song for A.R.Rahman, and she does a fine job keeping up with Udit Narayan. The title track, "Khel Hai Yeh Khiladi Ka" is just plain weird! Swarnlatha whines the main line over and over while a husky Shwetha Shetty complains about giving her "Dil" to a "Patthar Dil Police Wala". The "Police Wala" (Suresh Peters) counters this with "Tujhko Chori Ki Saza Doonga"!!!! What on earth is this song supposed to be about??!!! Don't worry, Rahman redeems himself by bringing together Hariharan and the inimitable Asha Bhosle for "Pakka Dilbar Jaani". The lyrics are nothing to crow about, but the two singers do a brilliant job with the semi-classical melody fused with a 'mega-bass' dance beat. This album is worth buying for this last number alone, it's just a pity A.R.Rahman can't be this creative in every song!

Love You Hamesha'
Director: Kailash Surendranath
Music: A.R. Rahman
Lyrics: Anand Bakshi
After 'Vishwavidhaata', Rahman once again uses the music from a Tamil movie 'May Maadham' for 'Love You Hamesha'. The maiden venture of ad-film director, Kailash Surendranath, the film stars Akshaye Khanna, Sonali Bendre and Riya Sen. The title number sparkles with Shweta Shetty and Sonu Nigam adding pep to the guitar score.
'Gup chup baatein', (Sadhana Sargam and Hariharan) with Anand Bakshi 's attractive lyrics is a winner. The haunting 'Yaar teri bewafai', by Mahalaxmi Iyer, will remain etched in listeners' memories.
Sonu Nigam takes a swig in 'Botal tod de' and is duly berated by Hema Sardesai for it. 'Sone ka palang', by Ila Arun, Udit Narayan and Kavita Paudwal, is a lively marriage song, though Anuradha Paudwal is preferable to her daughter. Kavita Krishnamurthy excels in the soft number 'Ek ladki thi'.
The songs are vibrant even though the music is not original. Full marks to Rahman and Anand Bakshi.

Music Review: Nayak
Music Director: A.R.Rahman
Lyrics: Anand Bakshi
When an album has Rahman's name on its cover, expectations are high and Nayak is no exception. The music is nice but somehow lacks the Rahman touch.
Nayak, Shankar's Hindi remake of his Tamil superhit Mudalvan, has retained some of Rahman's tunes from the original. Shakalaka Baby is undoubtedly the most popular and sensational of the lot. Vasundhara Das, who sung the Tamil version, sings this too. She is ably supported by Shiraz Uppa and Pravin Mani.
Chalo Chale Mitwa by Udit Narayan and Kavita Subramaniam is melodious but one does come across such songs quite often in films. Saiyyan (Sunidhi Chauhan, Hans Raj Hans), Chidiya Tu Hoti To (Abhijeet, Sanjeevani) and Tu Achcha Lagta Hai (Hariharan, Kavita Subramanaim) fail to capture the imagination of the listener.
Apart from Shakakaka Baby, there is another lively number in the form of Ruki Sukhi Roti. Shankar Mahadevan enthralls and adds more life to the bubbly beat of the tune with ample support from Alka Yagnik. These two songs actually make the soundtrack worth listening to.
As a whole, though Rahman fails to come out with a great soundtrack, he does not fail to impress listeners. With picturesque visuals, Nayak's songs are bound to touch the right chord.

4 | AAYITHA EZHUTHU - Tamil Music |
STARRING : SURYA, MADHAVAN, SIDDARTH, TRISHA, MEERA JASMIN DIRECTOR : MANI RATHNAM MUSIC : A.R.RAHMAN LYRICS : VAIRAMUTHU NANJILONLINE RATING
After "Kannathil Muthamittal" which had lots of orchestrations and plenty of melodies for which A.R.Rahman and Vairamuthu received National Award, the same combo Maniratnam - A.R.Rahman - Vairamuthu come out with techno stuff in "Aayitha Ezhuthu" The album is full of energy and will be liked by the youth. Hey GoodBye Nanba The treatment used in this song reminds of the (g)olden era. The song starts with sunita with a low husky voice and suddenly changes to rock kinda stuff with the lines "nee yaaro naan yaaro" " kan thondri kan kaana kaneero" is very catchy and ARR does a good job in voice modulation. Shankar and Sunita have done a excellent job, nothing to talk about Karthik and Lucky Ali. On the whole a nice song will be liked by all. Sure HIT Jana Gana Mana "ini oru ini oru vidi seivom, vidiyanai maatrum vidi seivom" Vairamuthu rocks!!! The song starts with fantastic beats and guitar and the chants o Yuva is very energetic.ARR uses glass breaking sounds this reminds if chandraleka song from Thiruda Thiruda . This one is a revolution song tell youth to fight againt social evils and asks all the youth to unify. ARR is the only singer who can perform this song effectively. Don't know why Karthik's name features in this song cannot find him. A sure winner
This song could have been the best in this album but thanks to Madhushree for spoiling the wonderful tune and Tamil. Doesn't Tamil music industry have good female singers? Don't know why Rahman chose Madhusree. Anyway the song starts with beats of clay pots and it has very catchy folk tune. When the singer sings "aiyya" it reminds me of a song from Thalapati . A.R.Rahman does an excellent aalap. Overall a good tune but the singer kills Tamil.
Only ARR can do such kind of stuffs in India . The Trombone piece by Maxwell reminds me of James Bond music anyways the tune is catchy, foot tapping number. The beats is similar to Shakalaka Baby then changes to Punjabi kind of at the end. This song has indeed fantastic Programming. A foot tapping number
Again Adnan spoils the song; don't know why ARR chooses these kinds of singers in Tamil. But his cool voice suites the mood of the song. S imple tune full of techno beats. Maybe ARR should have used original instruments, could have made good utilization of Naveen .
A.R.Rahman sings in an amazing manner the way he sings Fanah it fades away slowly is mind blowing. Vairamuthu's Lyrics are an asset. The best part of the song is when ARR goes classical "sa pa ma pa.." Only Rahman can imagine, think and deliver this type of song. He is truly a genius. Best song of the album!!!
He has indeed entertained in this album but yes this album is not for masses, but will be liked by YUVA (Youth). VERDICT : A Must Buy for every A.R.Rahman fan and youthful music lovers. |

4 | NEW - Tamil Music Review |
STARRING : S.J.SURYA, SIMRAN DIRECTOR : S.J.SURYA MUSIC : A.R.RAHMAN NANJILONLINE RATING
Sainath | July 09 2004 After giving two blockbusters Khushi and Valee S.J.Surayh has roped in "mozart of the east" A R Rahman to compose for his latest venture "NEW" and lyrics penned down by Vairamuthu.According to S J Surayh NEW was supposed to be a landmark album for A R Rahman. Is it so??? NEW NEW Blaaze,Karthik, Vijayprakash, Sunitha and Tanvi The song starts of with a rap piece by Blaaze which is quite catchy infact this song has become a big hit in chennai.Lots of computer sounds, beats very likeable song esspecially when Blaaze sings.Other singers do have done their bit but this song clearly belongs to Blaaze. A sure HIT. Sakkara SPB,Sujata This song has all the elements to become a huge hit. A R Rahman has used every available south indian instruments in this song, nadhaswaram, thavil to name a few. sujata has done a good job but one feels its the time for SPB to retire. Thootal poo malarum Harini,Hariharan A lot was said about this song, there were conflicting reports whether it is a remix or the makers have used only lyrics..yes the tune is completely original and very likeable. It was a big gamble taken by AR Rahman to compose a dfferent tune for a old song but as usual has done a excellent job. But one feels he should have taken due care while choosing the loops. The loops used in this song is available everywhere and used quite often.Harini and Hariharan are to be watched in this song they have done justice to the song. Again lots of computer song and the song is well picturised on Surayh and Simran. AR Rahman has used Accordion in a effective manner. Lets see how people react to this song. Kalaiyil ezhundadhum Unni krishnan,Sadhana Sargam No doubt Best song of the album. Unni Krishnan and Sadhna have rendered beautifully. The pianos and flute enrich the song. Very simple tune but is very effective.nice job by vairamuthu. This song truly deserves a special recognition. If u wanna Anupama and chorus Well this song might be composed specially for telugu audience. The english rap is quite irritating.this is supposed to be simran's introduction song. could have been much better. Lyrics are horrible and nonsense. Spiderman Kunal,Sadhna Wow!! Beautifully composed and brilliantly sung!! The guitar piece is absolute mindblowing and is used as a loop. The voices are digitaly mixed nice concept very well directed song by Rahman. Kunal is the most happening singer today has done a excellent job and well supported by Sadhna. Truly a well composed song. Kumbakonam Nithyashree,Vinayakan This is supposed to be a folk song. This song is quite irritating and boring song. Feels like S J suryah had pressurised Rahman to compose the song which is equally badly sung by Nityashree. No scope for this song perhaps this song should have been excluded. On the whole New is a average album.Though it has beautiful melodies like spideman and Kalaiyil ezhundadhum but songs like kumbakonam spoils the good atmosphere of the former. S J Surayah's remark that this album will be a landmark...doesnt seem so in respect with the quality of the songs. On the sales point of view this album should be on a profitable side. VERDICT : If you are a Hardcore Rahman fan then it is a must buy. |

4 | Boys - Tamil Music |
STARRING : New Faces DIRECTOR : SHANKAR AUDIO : Five Star Audio MUSIC : A.R.RAHMAN LYRICS : Vaali, Pa.Vijay, Kabilan NANJILONLINE RATING
The much expected Shankar - A.R.Rahman combo's Boys audio released. They are known for huge budget films and catchy youthful songs and Boys is not an exception. For A.R.Rahman, after the recent failures like Parasuram, media and his fans doubted that he lost his magic. But he's back with a bang in Boys with electrifying youthful songs. The Album begins in a grand manner with "Girl Friend" sung by Karthik and lyrics by Pa.Vijay. Karthik sounds better and better with every song and he has sung three songs in this album. This is a typical Rahman song with nice beats and the guitar parts in the interludes are excellent. This song is the pick of the album. "Dating" by Blaaze and Vasundhara Das and penned by Pa.Vijay. The song starts off slowly and suddenly picks up with Blaaze's rap style English lyrics. It's a catchy song and you'll love it in the first listening itself. When the charanam part comes, thirukkural (extracted) "muganaga natpadhu..." and "karkka kasadara..." sounds really cool with English lyrics and western beats. Next Comes "Boom Boom" by Adnan Sami and Sadhana Sargam, lyrics by Kabilan. This is a very catchy song, and it starts with some knocking sounds. Though this song sounds cool in Adnan's voice, when the charanam comes the words like "Kayalaankadaiyil" sounds very funny in Adnan's voice and it's very hard to understand the pronunciations. In the final part there are some unusual music and sounds that you'll wonder if there is any problem with your music system. "Secret of Success" sung by Lucky Ali, Vasundhara Das, Blaaze and lyrics by Vaali. It has a catchy and energetic rhythm, the song is not very catchy but it will grow on you after coupler listening. The starting of the song has some resemblance with an Eminem and Backstreet Boys songs. The Song is very well sung by Lucky Ali and others and the "Ohoo... We are the boys" part is mind blowing, its one of the best songs in the album. "Ale Ale" sung by Karthik and Chithra Sivaraman and lyrics by Kabilan. This is the only song of the album which has some good lyrics without single English word. It's fabulously sung and the ale ale part is nice, when the "kadhal sonna kanamae..." part comes it reminds us the baba song. After hearing some heavy beat songs, this song sounds sweet. "Maro Maro" sung by Karthik, Kunal, George, Anupama and Sunitha. Lyrics by Vaali and the song starts like a Hindi song with words like "maro maro chowka chakka se maro...". Drums and electric guitars are very well used in the prelude and throughout the song by Rahman. The song is supposed to be sung by the boys in an India Vs Australia cricket match with 500 drums and dancers in the movie. Overall it's a mind blowing album with some refreshing music. But the problems with the songs are too many English lyrics and the Tamil pronunciations of singers like Adnan Sami. Thank god they've given the complete lyrics with the Cassettes & CDs otherwise it would be very hard to identify the words in songs like Secret of Success. It looks like the movie is based on the music and aimed at the youngsters and A.R.Rahman has done his job excellently and quite effectively. It seems like youngsters are already hooked with the songs and the cassettes & CDs are already selling like hot cakes. WOW! : A.R.Rahman's Music and Energetic Youthful songs NANJILONLINE TOP 3 SONGS OF THE ALBUM : VERDICT : If you're an youngster then what're you waiting for? Go and grab your copy. |
