The Lord of the Rings will begin previews at the Drury Lane Theatre on May 9, 2007 and officially open on June 19th. James Love and Peter Howe will reprise their roles as Frodo and Sam from the musical's Toronto debut.
The Lord of the Rings, based on the trilogy of novels by J.R.R. Tolkien, features direction by Matthew Warchus, book and lyrics by Shaun McKenna and Matthew Warchus, and music by A.R Rahman and Varttina with Christopher Nightingdale.

London Mary Poppins star Laura Michelle Kelly will play the elven queen Galadriel in the upcoming London production of The Lord of the Rings, which opens at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on June 19th, 2007.
Kelly, who won an Olivier Award for originating the title role of the Mary Poppins stage musical, will be joined by the previously announced James Loye, who will play Frodo Baggins.
Loye was a member of the original Lord of the Rings Toronto cast; Kelly will be a new addition. The actress has also appeared on the West End in Beauty and the Beast, Whistle Down the Wind, Les Miserables, Mamma Mia! and My Fair Lady, as well as on Broadway in Fiddler on the Roof.
The world premiere Toronto production of Lord of the Rings began performances on February 4, 2006, and closed on September 3rd at the Princess of Wales Theatre.
The production, based on the J.R.R. Tolkien books (which also inspired Peter Jackson's Oscar-winning film series), generated an economic impact of more than $640 million to Toronto and the province of Ontario during its hit run. Despite opening to mixed reviews, The Lord of the Rings received seven Dora Awards - including Best Musical.
The Lord of the Rings features music by A.R. Rahman (along with the Finnish group Varrtina and Christopher Nightingale), and the book and lyrics are by Shaun McKenna and Matthew Warchus. Rob Howell's elaborate sets feature three interconnected turntables with 16 elevators; he also designed the costumes. Warchus directs.
The creative team spent over two years developing the show.
The production, which had cost $27 million (Canadian) to stage, will be shorter in its London incarnation than it was in Toronto. The Canadian version clocked in at over three-and-a-half hours; the London musical will be performed in less than three.
Roger Nair Prod bags Guru Canada rights By Johnny Vaz 19 December 2006, 07:46 PM | |
MUMBAI: Roger Nair Productions has acquired the Canadian rights of writer-director Mani Ratnam's Guru from Bobby Bedi's Kaleidoscope Entertainment, which owns the overseas rights of the film. Guru stars Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, R Madhavan and Vidya Balan in the lead roles. Music for the film has been composed by A R Rahman. A star studded world premiere will be held in Toronto, Canada on 11 January, 2007 at the Elgin & Winter Garden Theatre Centre, where many Hollywood movies are premiered. Most of the cast and crew of Guru are expected to attend the premiere. "This will be a pathbreaking and landmark deal between Canada and India, making Canada an official territory for Bollywood films. Roger Nair Productions and its directors Roger Nair (its Toronto based CEO) and Padamm Kumar (the India based COO) have entered the distribution market in a big way for the Canada territory and will be buying films for North America and Europe as well. Roger Nair Productions is also in negotiations with other top Hindi filmmakers for acquiring rights to their films," says Roger Nair Productions spokesperson Meenakshi Kumar. Historically, the Indian film industry has always looked upon North America as one combined territory. The lobbying by Canadian companies for video and television rights have thus far been futile, forcing them to get only exhibition rights, which did not help in fighting video piracy in the lucrative Canadian market. Roger Nair Productions, a Canadian company has now acquired absolute theatrical, video and TV rights, ensuring legal rights to curb piracy with the help of the police and the judicial system. Guru will open in the Canada wide Cineplex, AMC and Empire theatres on 12 January 2007. <> function fncontent_rate(x) { var cid=2165;var type='';var loc='http://64.34.166.12/businessofcinema/';var uid=''; loc=loc+'generic/components/storyrating.php?file='+t ype+'&&rate='+x+'&uid='+uid; window.open(loc,'ra tings','width=500,height=550'); window.history.go(); } |

Laura Michelle Kelly, who won a 2005 Olivier for her title role performance in Mary Poppins, will join the cast of Lord of the Rings when the musical spectacular opens at London's Theatre Royal, Drury Lane on June 19, 2007.
Kelly will play Galadriel, the character played by Cate Blanchett in the movie versions. Kelly joins British actor James Loye who, as previously announced, will reprise his Toronto performance as Frodo Baggins. The J.R.R. Tolkien-inspired musical received its premiere at Toronto's 2,000-seat Princess of Wales Theatre on March 23. Matthew Warchus' $27 million (Canadian), three-act production is the first stage adaptation of the literary epic and follows the hugely successful film trilogy. The London version arrives two years after the 2005 70th anniversary of Tolkien starting the trilogy, and the 50th anniversary since the works — "The Fellowship of the Ring," "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King" — were published. Book and lyrics are by Shaun McKenna and Warchus, with music supplied by A.R. Rahman and Finnish band Vrttin with Christopher Nightingale. The show is choreographed by Peter Darling with set and costume design by Rob Howell. While Peter Jackson's movie version of the trilogy amounted to nine hours of cinema, the London version will, it is thought, run at less than three hours — considerably shorter than the three-hour, forty-minute Toronto version. In the meantime, Warchus has also been confirmed as director for a revival of Marc Camoletti's 1960s farce Boeing - Boeing, about a Paris-based playboy with three airhostess lovers. The 1965 film version starred Tony Curtis and Jerry Lewis. Warchus's production, which stars Roger Allam, Mark Rylance and Francis de la Tour, opens at the Comedy Theatre on Feb. 15 following previews from Feb. 3.For more on Lord of the Rings, call (0)870 890 6002.

Koena Mitra is enthusiasm personified about sharing stage with International pop diva Nelly Furtado. She along with Priyanka Chopra and Shahid Kapoor are gearing up to sizzle the stage with the international songstress on 31st December. "I'll be grooving to all my songs (MUSAFIR, EK KHILADI EK HASINA) including my latest tracks from APNA SAPNA… So many varied artistes like Nelly, Canada based Punjabi band JOSH, A.R Rahman, Shahid and Priyanka are performing so it'll be great fun. With a combination of such diverse artistes, the show is bound to be a lot spicier," raves Koena.
So is she not anxious about sharing stage with Grammy winner Nelly Furtado? "I'm pretty used to shows, especially solo shows so I'm not nervous. Infact I am excited and looking forward to 31st December. The Grand Finale will be a medley of songs. It's a live show and an international platform. It's an opportunity to reach out to international audience," she adds.
Nelly Furtado's debut album 'Whoa Nelly' was released in 2000 and spawned the hit single 'I'm Like A Bird'. Her songs 'Promiscuous' and 'Maneater' from her new album 'Loose' are hot favourites amongst others.
So don't miss out 'Nokia New Year's Eve' at Andheri Sports Complex in Mumbai.
On the work front, she has two films with Sanjay Gupta and Subhash Ghai in her kitty. Right now, the Bengali damsel is kicked about her role in Ananth Mahadevan's ANAMIKA- The Untold Story. "It's a romantic thriller loaded with suspense. It's based on three characters (Dino Moreo, Minissha Lamba and herself) and Ananth has worked really hard in shaping our respective characters. It's a serious role minus singing and dancing. The look of the film is spectacular since we've shot in Bikaner and Gajner," says Koena who plays Dino's childhood sweetheart in the film.

Though the film has some uncanny resemblances to the life of the industrialist Dhirubhai Ambani, Mani insists the plot in his latest film Guru is rooted to a cinematic reality. "Hopefully it'll have some connect with real life," he says amidst hectic sessions of background music with A.R Rahman. Why did Mani cast Abhishek in a role that required a huge historical and chronological journey? Mani can't seem to get enough of his Yuva lead. "Abhishek was the first choice for Guru and I am very happy about his work. I think he is growing remarkably as an actor. If you shift me back to the start and ask me who you will cast as Guru I will go back to Abhishek." This is also the second time that Mani has worked with Aishwarya Rai. "I was quite happy with what Ash did in Irruvar. I thought she was quite remarkable, given that it was her first film and in a language (Tamil) that she did not know. In Guru she was speaking Hindi, so it must have been much easier on her. She has done the role with a lot of dignity and poise. She remained very close to the character and has done it with ease. In a film that is based on Guru she stands tall and strong." Mani has finished the film in record time. Why the rush? Is it because he needed to get into your Aamir-Kareena starrer Lajjo right away? "No rush at all! I'm just doing work that I am paid to do. It was planned as a single-schedule film and we finished our major work by June-end. Aamir-Kareena film has now been rescheduled to the second half of 2007." Looking back, does Mani see Yuva as an experience that didn't connect as much with the audience as you hoped it would? He refuses to find excuses for the film's failure? "There is always room to try something new. Be it in content or form or look. And when you do try something new there is always a chance that that it may not connect fully with the audience. That is a risk that a filmmaker has to take. If you take the credit when it works you have to take the blame when a film does not. But that should not stop you from growing and take a few more steps ahead. That's where Guru has taken me." |

Rahman proves his class in Guru Tuesday December 19 2006 10:48 IST Guru is one of the rare occasions when Mani Ratnam, A R Rahman and Gulzar have come together. Loosely based on the life of Reliance founder Dhirubhai Ambani, the film has Abhisekh Bachchan playing the role of the late business icon. |
After a long media hiatus, Malika Sherawat is back to claim the sexy siren title, swaying her hips to an Arabic tune. 'Maya Maya,' an item number from the film Guru has put the spotlight back on our desi sex kitten. So while Miss Sherawat is gyrating away, it's Bachchan Junior who seems more than happy to play spectator. The song which has been shot in Turkey has quite an interesting story behind it. "When I was returning from Haj, one guy had water on his cart and was saying 'maya-maya-maya'. I later learnt that it was an Arabic word for water. I thought it was an interesting sound and sounds very Indian too. And since Mani wanted an Arabic song, why not use the words," reveals A R Rahman, Music Composer. So while this item number is creating quite a few waves, the other songs of Guru are also hitting the right notes. "What I really like about Guru is that there's no one song which will stand on its own and make it a favourite. The entire soundtrack is exactly that - it's a soundtrack and it supports and compliments the film brilliantly," says Abhishek Bachchan. Well the mix seems to be rather interesting if there is an out-and-out commercial item number. Then there also is a very unusual song sung by Bappi Lahiri. What one needs to watch out for is the potent combination of director Mani Ratnam and A R Rahman especially after they have delivered hits with chart-busting music like Yuva, Roja, Dil Se and Bombay.
