Once upon a time he was called as Salman's favourite music director. Himesh Reshammiya has been associated with a lot of his films for giving Salman hit songs. Though the films bombed his score was well appreciated by the masses. Now he is back in the spotlight because of two movies for which he has given a good score. One is a fluffy romantic drama -'Kyaa Dil Ne Kahaa' and the other is a suspense thriller-'Humraaz'. Both the albums are out and the songs are already climbing steadily on the charts.

In an industry which is dominated by Anu Malik and the southern maestro A.R. Rehman, Himesh has certainly made a niche for his own kind of music. His songs are melodious and catchy, giving the movie the kind of mood it requires. In case of Humraaz the film has a score that would definitely boost its chances of striking gold at the box-office. The album is being appreciated by critics and the title track is soon to become a rage.

Nadeem or Himesh

Producer-director Suneel Darshan has not finalised the music director of his next untitled film.

It may be noted that Suneel has worked actively with Nadeem-Shravan on his recent films but with the two composers bidding adieu to each other, the filmmaker isn't sure whether to sign on just Nadeem and whether that would be accepted by the industry and audience.

Who's the other composer in the reckoning? Himesh Reshammiya, of course!

The Anu Malik - Himesh Reshammiya war hots up!

We've seen promotional music videos appearing just on television, or before or after a film. (Remember Tata Young's song in 'Dhoom'? 'Right Here Right Now' in 'Bluffmaster'?) This one's been actually in the film, but part of a scene, of course. Taking Anu Malik's anger to the next level (we presume), Himesh's hit composition of the title track of 'Humko Deewana Kar Gaye' has been included in the film, and appears before the film's interval, as part of a romantic sequence between Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif.

Also, the next batch of cassettes and CDs of 'Humko Deewana Kar Gaye' have the original and remix versions of Himesh's compositions included.

Himesh Reshammiya is getting operated for nasal polyps. They were discovered on Thursday afternoon, when the singer complained of difficulty in breathing during a rehearsal. Earlier, Himesh did have some breathing problems, and the occasional nosebleed, but he never really bothered about it. But on Thursday, he was in too much discomfort to ignore the problem. So he finally went to an ENT specialist, who told him that he had a couple of polyps growing in his nose, which have probably been there for months now.

P.S: What are polyps? Polyps are swollen skin, lining the inside of the large air spaces that exist in the bones of your nose. They look like small bunches of grapes. They exist in 1 to 4 per cent of people and are two to four times more frequent in men compared to women. They create difficulty in breathing easily through the nose.

It's Himesh vs Rehman now

He's the toast of the season. All his songs have been chartbusters. His compositions have managed to sell movies on their sheer strength. But now, Reshammiya faces the biggest challenge of them all.

As he's all set to rock the US with a spate of concerts in July-August, he's also going to be taking his greatest inspiration, head-on. AR Rahman will perform in the US at the same time as Himesh, and it will be interesting to see who will win this mother of all battles.

A local show promoter says, "Himesh is very popular among Asians at large; not just Indians. Rahman may be a bigger name internationally but for the Asian community, it's Himesh all the way."

Himesh's tour is called Aap Ka Suroor Live In Concert and is being backed by one of the biggest names in the business, Vijay Taneja of Elite Entertainment while Rahman has tied up with the US-based Global Rhythms as partners for his shows.

The only difference is that while Rahman would be performing at just a handful of cities, Himesh would be taking his troupe all over the country and Canada as well, in a tour spanning over two months.

Incidentally, the average cost of a single Himesh Reshammiya show in the US is around 100,000 US dollars (approx Rs 47 lakh) and the ticket rates have been priced between $35 to $75 (approx Rs 1600 to Rs 3500). These would be classified as among the highest rates commanded by a music director.

Unfair comparison

According to show promoters, comparisons between the two are unfair because each one caters to a totally different audience. "Rahman's fan-following is among the mature audience; even foreigners come to his shows to hear his sound," says a Houston-based organiser.

Himesh's popularity, on the other hand, is more among the youth. "The youngsters are just crazy about his songs. This is his first tour and there's no doubt, it will be a huge success." Accompanying Himesh on the tour, are singers like Alisha Chinoy and Abhijeet Sawant.

Himesh, who is touted as the industry's hottest music director right now, has been Rahman's biggest fan for years now. He has even gone on records to say that Rahman is the only composer that he would agree to lend his voice for.

But now that he's been pitted against him directly in a war of shows, Himesh says, "I'm nothing compared to AR Rahman. Since I respect him a lot, I would prefer attending his shows to take his blessings before I head to perform at my concert. Also, if you will check with the organisers, you will know that the tickets for all my show are already sold out."
