The trend seems to have picked up lately though. Trend setters Earlier, composers Vishal Dadlani of the Vishal- Shekhar duo and Shankar Mahadevan and Loy Men- donsa of Shankar-Ehsaan- Loy have sung for movies. It would be a sin to ignore composer-turned-singer- turned-actor Himesh Re- shammiya here. There's no stopping him. "I've been singing a lot over the last one year But that was to meet the requirement of a particular song. I have no intentions of becoming a full-time singer," asserts Vishal Dadlani. He recent- ly sang for Ta Ra Rum Pum. Earlier, he's also sung for Honeymoon Tray- els Pot Ltd, Golmaal and I See You. Historywise Composers SD and RD Burman going behind the mike isn't unheard of. In the 1980s, Bappi Lahiri sang with his unorthodox playback style. The trend was revived by AR Rah- man. He tried his vocals as a back-up for playback singers in his films. Later he became a successful singer with Dil Se. Rahman didn't sing reg- ularly Composers like Vishal and Shankar do one or two songs in each of their films. "A composer may look for punch in a song but is unable to ex- plain it to the singer It's best he sings it himself," says Pritam. Catalysts Directors give consider- able liberty to composers.
