So far he has been accused of writing esoteric and elitist poetry. But Gulzar has now decided to write songs that may be easier on the average man's ears.

"It isn't as if I'd deliberately write lyrics that were difficult for some people to understand," he says. "Every song and situation have their own rhythm….But the popularity of Kajra re is very unsual. "

The poet-extraordinaire hopes to now write more songs that cut across the population. "In my next assignment Jaan-e-Man I've written fairly simple lyrics. Maybe there's a Kajra re tucked away there."Gulzarsaab has been nominated for three out of the five Filmfare nominations for best lyricist. He chuckles, "Ah, but I've heard that so many nominations cancel each other out."
