Rahman and UN team up for a cause

A.R Rahman is geared up to be the ideal mascot for a musical show called 'Mission Ustaad' to be launched on a new Hindi television channel called 9X in association with the UN and Endemol Productions.

'Mission Ustaad' seems to be an apt vehicle in the opinion of the creators of the show, for spreading awareness about the UN's Millennium Development Goals as music unifies the human race. The show will feature some of the best entertainers from India.

Rahman who has worked earlier with UN by composing an anthem on poverty and the unprivileged through his 'Pray For Me Brother' said that he was pretty convinced that the partnership will surely result in the desired awakening among Indian viewers and will definitely touch the chords of Indian viewers.

The show offers a real hope for the marginalized people of India like the Dalits and tribals as far as the education is concerned, emphasized Salil Shetty, the director of United Nations Millenium Campaign.

Shweta sings for Ash

The 21-year-old has sung for the actor in RGV's 'Sarkar 2'

MUMBAI: Born into a musical family, performing at international events at the age of 10, and singing for Aishwarya Rai at 21—Shweta Pandit has done pretty much more than any average teen can dream of. But this youngster is not content. She is now out to do her bit for poverty as well.

"I am participating in a new show called 'Mission Ustaad' (9X), which is associated with the United Nations. At the end of the show, one song will be chosen to represent India's commitment to achieving the eight millennium goals. A R Rahman is judging the show," she says.

"I have always wanted to do something as social service, but I wasn't sure how I would do it," she adds.

In the show, Shweta partners with singer Naresh Iyer. "I am so glad that Naresh is my partner because we are both young singers, both of us have a funky style. It will be fun to jam with him. In fact, over the past few days we have been busy experimenting and trying out different things for our show," she adds.

Besides the show, Shweta is also busy doing playback singing for various films. "I am really excited about my song in 'Sarkar 2', which has been filmed on Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. A lot of people have told me that despite being so young, my voice is suited to that of a mature woman. This really makes me happy," she adds. Incidentally, Shweta is related to the composer duo Jatin-Lalit.

Ustaad Buzz

Sunali's Tryst with Destiny – Dec 7th, 07
Some stories are hard to believe and one such story is Sunali Rathods's. On the show Sunali narrated how she lost her voice when she was 16 years old. No medication seemed to work on her. Since her condition remained unchanged, her family members started asking her to give up the dream of becoming a singer and take interest in some other profession. However, Sunlai Rathod never lost hope and her determination paid off. She regained her voice after 6 years and today she is a well known singer. Must say, it has been quite a journey for this gritty singer.

Javed does not mince words- Dec 2nd, 07
Javed Akhtar is one person who is completely honest and straightforward while judging talent shows. He does not try to be politically correct and never minces his words, even at the risk of sounding rude. We saw this side to him during Indian Idol and now we are witnessing the same quality on our show Mission Ustaad. On the first episode itself Javed made it very obvious, who he considered the strongest Jodi of the lot. When Kailash Kher and Mahalxmi Iyer performed he told the other contestants that even though they were all very talented, they faced a serious threat from Kailash and Mahalaxmi. That was one Jodi they should all fear. Sunali Rathod even reacted to Javed's comment by saying that even though the other two were very good, she and Roop Kumar were no less.

This is Like Family- Dec 2nd, 07
According to Kailash Kher, he immediately said yes to the offer of participating in Mission Ustaad because of the concept behind the show. He feels that the show is a sincere effort to spread awareness about the UN Millennium goals and its format does not offer any space for eye grabbing tactics to increase viewership ratings. He does not mind even if the judges get a bit harsh in their criticism because he believes that even family members tend to have their own differences and fights. After all, the judges are masters in their own fields.

If you want to see fireworks, watch the latest episode of Mission Ustaad, where one composer tries to complain about Javed Akhtar's comments and then belatedly drags in the part where Rahamn fused 2 songs into 1....
He complained that no one had asked permission, which, if anyone saw the episode they asked and discussed several times: so he couldn't have been watching his own show!!!
He got sent packing by Javed Akhtar.

Moral: if you want to argue, esp with JA, come with a battery of arguments and well-prepared or you end up with your tail between your legs.

It was also brilliant the way JA told them how to incorporate the tenses in Hindi (tha and hai) to give lyrics more meaning without losing the musicality....
