Cardspeak: 2008 for TV stars

Noted Tarot card reader Dr Soniyaa P Bhaagiyaa predicts what's in store for some of our top telly stars this year.

Smriti Irani
It is going to be a mixed year. There will be ups and downs but it will be a happy year overall.

As a producer: There will be many projects and she will be doing a lot of juggling. She will try to manage two different projects at a time but eventually will do a good job. She would also try to expand herself. Advice card for her indicates that she should try to strike a balance as far as her professional life and production house is concerned. At the end, her professional life will do well.

As an actor: Her acting career will be really good. She will also do some other projects. There are very little chances of her returning to Kyunki as she will busy in her projects own projects.

Relation with Ekta Kapoor: Overall it will be healthy.

In short, patience will be the key and in any circumstances don't give up.

Sanjeeda Sheikh

Overall it will be a great year. She will be very busy and will get whatever she wants as the wish card indicates. A very fruitful career is awaiting her. If she wears golden red and yellow and white, luck will be in her favour.

Aamir Ali

This year will be good for him. In the beginning, he will get some good opportunities which will be very good career wise as he will get lot of support. He should believe in himself and in what is right for him and should not look back.

Aamir-Sanjeeda marriage? May be by the end of this year...

Prachi Desai

Professionally, it will be a mixed year for her. Whatever she has worked hard on in 2007 will help her this year. It is going to be a creative year for her.

Her movie Rock On: The film might do well but she needs to balance her act. Destiny is going to support her throughout. She will get more offers from Bollywood but she will be very choosy and cautious.

Quitting Television: There are 50-50 chances. She will be very calculative and thus will face a lot of stress. 2008 can be rightly called a Dilemma Year for her as she will be in jeopardy whether or not to quit television. She will complete her studies through correspondence.

Rohit Roy

It will be a mixed year as the actor will have to struggle a lot especially in money matters. Health wise also there will be minor injuries so he has to be careful. There will be a lot of tension and it might affect his filmi career. There are bright chances that he will be back in television.

Advice card: He has to handle the situation very carefully and should be open to taking advice.

Ronit Roy

It is going to be a mixed year for Ronit Roy. He will have the support of his luck and some spiritual and unknown things. We suggest he learn from some failures in the past. He needs to be careful of his friends and enemies.

Advice card: He has to trust God

Ram Kapoor and Gautami Kapoor

2008 will be mixed year for Ram. He should help himself and not depend on others.

Gautami's year will also be ok. She has to manage both her career and personal life. Besides this she might get some television offers. They might be seen together as a lead in one of the serials.

Divyanka Tripathy

A mixed year ahead. She has to be careful of her surroundings. There will be an emotional journey. There will be an opportunity for her and if she clicks she will achieve great success. Health wise she has to take care of her food habits.

Advice card: She has to meditate and contemplative as to what she wants.

Abigail

2008 will be ok career wise. She will get support from Ekta Kapoor but has to have lots of patience to achieve name and fame. The year will be very hectic as she has to concentrate on her studies but she will eventually succeed.

Smriti offers Dheeraj a major role
7 Jan 2008, 0000 hrs IST,TNN

But Dheeraj is in a dilemma because his own production house is doing very well with serials like Maayka and Betiyaan...

Then there's also another show in the pipeline called Veerawali. And with more channels coming in, Dheeraj surely would like to make more shows.

Despite his busy production schedule, Dheeraj however has not declined Smriti's offer because acting has always been a passion for him.

"I started my career as an actor and how can I forget that," he says. Well, it seems like Dheeraj might just be back soon on the small screen. Let's wait and watch.

More spice on prime time platter
7 Jan 2008, 0000 hrs IST,AMRITA DIDYALA ,TNN

As 2008 begins, telly buffs could not have asked for more, with four new General Entertainment Channels (GEC) launched and a revamp going on in prime time programming slot of existing GECs.

With the airwaves getting busier, a visual extravaganza awaits the viewer. Surprisingly, some of the frothy fare on offer isn't all that different from what we've already seen — every channel has the same stereotype: a show about an ordinary girl and her extraordinary dreams, a musical reality show, a family soap and a historical. The fare might be similar, but the presentation and production values are different, insist channel honchos.

Will entertainment television see new prime time toppers? Current market leaders in the GEC segment are going for new content in a big way to counter competition. Some of the newer channels are riding high on money power (with investments of up to Rs 1,200 crore for each channel) ensuring they have the best from the industry talent pool.

For them it would mean weaning faithful TV viewers from their daily dose of entertainment which the present GECs are offering. From Karan Johar to Shah Rukh Khan, every Bollywood biggie is going small in 2008 and how!

At a time when all-India television viewership ratings (TVRs) have come down from 11/12 to 7/8, is there actually an interest in the present prime time offerings? Industry experts feel that new channels will not cut the market size, but help it grow. Manoj Vidwans, executive vice president (marketing) of NDTV Imagine set to hit the GEC segment, reveals, "Our channel brings in freshness that contemporary Indian youth will like. Our programming philosophy is to connect to the audience." Prem Kamath, VP (marketing and communications) of a GEC, says, "Although we may not see the kind of channel domination we had seen in the past years, with the increase in choice, viewership fragmentation is unavoidable.

But new channels aren't worrying us, so we don't plan radical changes. With a slew of launches, the market is going to become consumer-centric." Ashish Kaul, executive vice president of a GEC, says, "Although a host of channels may be gearing up to check in, I don't see threat to existing ones. New channels need to create a niche and overtake the existing competition before breaking even."

Wondering why the Hindi GEC segment has seen new players? It's simple: Hindi entertainment television commands 80 per cent of the Rs 6,000-crore TV advertising market. And most industry experts are of the opinion that the GEC captures 30-40 per cent of the television audience. Existing GECs have been consolidating their gains and have attracted subscriptions that account for nearly half their total revenue. Consumers are unwilling to pay subscription fees for new channels. Viewers don't mind a diverse platter when it comes to television, but the offering should be free.

So, it's a tough battle ahead for new entrants in the GEC segment. For remote-happy viewers, variety is the spice of watching television.

9X, Bindass trump popular TV channels

The new GEC channels, 9X and Bindass, has started making inroads into the viewership of the already established MTV, [V], Sony, Star Utsav, Sahara One and SAB TV who are smarting under this new attack to their strongholds. With an impressive 30 per cent penetration of the C&S households within the first month of broadcast itself, 9X has made a very impressive start. 9X is visible in all the major metro towns and some audience measurement agencies have reported that 9X is almost on par with the decade old Sony entertainment channel, the weakest of the three "senior" GEC channels of Sony, Zee and Star which have been broadcasting for almost a decade now.

Good household penetration and wide pre-launch exposure has contributed in garnering this early viewership. Bindass, the youth channel from UTV, is busy diluting the leadership of MTV and Channel [V] among the young viewers. The audience ratings for the UTV Bindass shows an impressive rating for the week day prime time slot, outnumbering Channel [V] and MTV by big margins. One of the major attractions on Bindass is their masala mix of hit English movies and other entertainment shows. Earlier this year, Sony Entertainment Television had also spruced up its inventory by acquiring exclusive world satellite rights of five blockbuster movies from Yash Raj Films. The movies were Chak De! India, Ta Ra Rum Pum, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Laaga Chunari Main Daag and Aaja Nachle. With the viewer getting more selective, the channels will have to use every trick to upgrade and their content and retain viewer ship numbers.

Telly actors pick their favourites

The awards season is on in both the TV and Film industry so we asked a few television stars to pick their favourites.

Ashwini Kalsekar (Jigyasaa in Kasamsh Se)
"If I have to choose only between the men then definitely Irrfan Khan. He is no longer a TV actor but I still remember his performances in Banegi Apni Baat. Ram Kapoor, who plays my brother, performs really well. Also Shah Rukh if you will ask me about old days. In females, Shefali Shah is my hot favourite. Achint Kaur is sensitive and sensible and lastly I like Raejshwari Sachdev. Among the older ones, I also like Suhasini Mule."

Chetan Hansraj (Sasha of Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki)

"I like Aaksh Deep Saigal, Sakshi Tawar and Shabbir Ahluwalia. They have been in this industry for a long time and have performed really well. People love them a lot and they have proved themselves. So I think they are the best."

Jay Bhanushali (Neev of Kayamath)

"Shabbir Ahluwalia, Smriti Irani, Ram Kapoor and Hussain too. I like their acting a lot. They can emote perfectly. Everyday I watch Shabbir on the sets and he always tries doing new things. Same is the case with Smriti and Ram."

Twinkle Bajpai (Lakshmi of Betiyaan)

"Smriti Irani because she is very expressive and can portray all types of emotions easily. Yatin Karyekar, who is my father in the serial, has so much of acting experience and he shares it with newcomers like us so it's a great pleasure to work with him. I have seen him in Shanti and I liked him in Iqbal too. Sharad Kelkar is also very good as Nahar."

Shewta Keswani (Gurinder Chaddha of Baa Bahu Aur Baby)

"Saakshi Tanwar, Ronit Roy and Smriti Irani. They have been part of the most popular K serials. Because of her hard work dedication, Smriti is now also doing well as a producer."

S aakshi Tanwar and Smriti Irani will host Yeh Hai Jalwa, the celebrity dance reality show on 9X. Mohammad Morani of Cineyug, who will be co-pro- ducing the show says that the bahu duo has been chosen because of their popularity. Tanwar neither confirms nor denies the news that she is host- ing the show. "Speak to Eternal Dreams, they will give you the official statement," is all she says. The title track of Yeh Hai Jal- wa is being sung by Zubin Garg who was recently in the news for his not-so-pleasant exit from Sahara One's Jjhoom India.

You really rave and rant on Mere Apne.. (Laughs) Yeah, I'm the angry young man of the show. I love it. The TRPs aren't encouraging, though The TRPs aren't picking up but the critical appreciation keeps us going. It will probably take a while to pick up because 9X is still new. You've always been a Balaji Telefilms loyalist.. how's it working with Uragya Productions? Their working style is more or less similar to Balaji's except for the fact that Uragya's is a lot more system- atic. At Balaji, the scripts took their time coming, so we could never have a bank of episodes. You're not to be seen in the 'K' shows anymore.. why? I was offered the lead in one of their soaps. I backed out because the character pops it after a few episodes. I've already died twice. I refuse to die in another Balaji show! You tried playing the baddie in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki.. did that work? I took on that role because I wanted to change my image. But the viewers couldn't accept me as a bad man.. they'd rather have me playing good boy. Guess that explains why Kajjal was a disaster too.. No, Kajjal didn't do well to begin with. Even the chan- nel wasn't faring too well at that point. Have you been able to shake off Piyush (Kahiin toh Hoga)? (Laughs) No he's still with me. Even today, when I take up a new role, they say, "Piyush is now playing XYZ." I doubt if anyone knows my real name. Do you consciously keep a low profile? I'm just very laid-back. I don't make an effort to meet people. That's a major drawback. Fortunately, I keep getting good work. Don't you aspire to join the movies? Yes, I'm all set to make the jump but I have no intentions of quitting TV. Another three years down the line and I'll be playing daddy and granddaddy on the tube. I'd like to continue doing other roles too. You've never been linked with anyone from the industry. That's right. Even though, ironically, I was dating someone from the industry. It didn't work out.

'I couldn't say no to Mere Apne'

Setting aside his bitter experiences of working on small screen after his debut serial Maharana Pratap got stuck, actor Vinod Khanna, a comeback man with Mere Apne feels that the character he portrays in the serial is "within his field of experience" and will help him connect with the audience.

"The character of Kashinath which I portray in the serial is within my field of experience and also I think that I am doing justice to the role," says the 62-year-old veteran actor, whose small screen presence is receiving wide acclaim.

The actor-turned-politician, who began his career as villain in Sunil Dutt's Man Ka Meet, says, "Once I decided to make a comeback in acting and utilize my time, offer for Mere Apne came and the role was so good that I could not say 'no'."

"There is the money, of course," quips the actor about his conscious shift to television medium, adding, "I felt the need to justify the demands of my fans who have been asking to see more of me."

The role of Kashinath, which Khanna portrays in the Mere Apne serial, is the saga of a person who is powerful in the society but is a soft-spoken father.

Comparing the silver screen with small screen, the actor, whose last movie Risk did not perform well at the box office, says, "Commitments in films are different from serials. In movies you can shift the dates but in serials you can't as episodes have to continue."

"Even I was apprehensive about the reaction from the TV audience and my fans but the positive reaction I am getting at present is really surprising," says the actor.

Vinod Khanna represents Gurdaspur parliamentary constituency and has been active in the political arena since he joined Bharatiya Janata Party in 1997.

The Gurdaspur MP, however, says, "When it comes to politics it would definitely take a front seat but without disturbing the acting career."

Vinod Khanna as a father of two Bollywood stars Rahul Khnna and Akshaye Khnna, shares, "I am looking forward to work with my sons but the two will not work with me unless they get their kind of role in the movie."

The veteran actor, who was awarded with Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999, has two films in his kitty; one is an untitled movie by Boney Kapoor with Salman Khan and another by Anjum Rizwi.

Oscar awards, according to Khanna, "give Bollywood a chance to compete with the best. But to avoid controversies, the body for selecting nominations should be constituted by bureaucrats and selected people from the film industry, who could not be manipulated."

Khanna also shares his happiness to comeback at this 'juncture' as, "the present era is dominated by 'multiplex culture' and the chances for a movie to be flop is rare. The movie finds its own audience."

Smriti Irani's health fundas

The ideal bahu of television Smriti Irani visited the Hinduja Hospital for spreading awareness about kidney diseases on World Kidney Day. We caught up with the lady to find out about her health mantras.

"There are lots of health problems like heart diseases and diabetes and people are aware about their symptoms but not about kidney diseases so I have come here. I requested them to celebrate it publicly next year. Doctors are doing whatever they can but personally I feel that we should also do something about it," she opines.

Smriti is associated with many social causes and whenever she goes out she tries to spread awareness about it. Smriti is US's ambassador for ORS in India "I always ask people around me to go for early check ups because youngsters too can fall prey to such diseases. I myself know many in their 20s and 30s who are suffering from diabetes, BP and heart problems. It is more common in metros than rural areas," she says.

Smriti admits excess work is main reason for all problems. "Most of the times hypertension is the cause of various diseases. It is good that people are turning towards medications and yoga."

About her daily routine, she reveals, "I never get a chance to manage my routine, but whenever my doctors advice me I get tests done to make sure that my hectic schedule does not harm my health. Since I am mother of two children and 30 plus I do mammogram tests. I also manage to follow a diet. I do not consume non vegetarian food and avoid eating oily stuff. But everyone will come to know after watching me that I hardly get time to exercise!"

Rohit Bakshi (TOI Photo)
He came to Mumbai from Delhi a few years back in the hope of becoming a model but fate had other plans for Rohit Bakshi.

He did do a few modelling projects but it's the small screen that has made him a familiar face. "I used to be really shy and when I was offered acting roles, I used to think 'acting and me? No way!'" he recalls with a smile. The actor has done a number of serials including Kahiin To Hoga, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kumkum and Kajjal. And these days, Rohit can be seen in Mere Apne on 9X as Vikram.

"The role has a lot of variations so I'm really enjoying it," he says. What he likes about this role particularly is that it is not just a positive role but a strong one at that. "I have done positive roles earlier but they have been the typical good boy types. Vikram is a strong guy who knows how to say no," he elaborates. Sharing screen space with biggies like Vinod Khanna and Smriti Iraani can be nerve-wracking for any actor, but Rohit says he has learnt to switch off that factor. "I think of them as their characters Kashinath and Sharda, otherwise I would get really nervous!" he admits with a laugh.

Looking back at his career, Rohit says that he does feel at times that he hasn't got his due. "Maybe I've just been unlucky. I need a good role to last about three-four years. In Kahiin To Hoga, my character had become really popular but by the time I started getting some good scenes, the track was removed. Same thing happened with Kyunki... Maybe it's just bad luck," he says. But the going seems good for now as he's getting a good response for his role in Mere Apne.

Rohit wants to try his hand at Bollywood too but he's realistic about the situation. "I know it takes a lot of time but I don't want to regret not even trying. Hua to hua, nahin hua to nahin," he adds.
