Bitto Rani & Choti Rani are the 2 nick names that Shanti devi uses to address her granddaughters.
While she has given them nick-names, I have also noticed that none of the others in the family use those names, only Shantidevi does. Be it Kausalya, Shivam, or Raghav, always address the girls with Nimmi or Preeti and not Bitto Rani / Choti Rani.

So, in a way, it is good that Shanti devi has some affection for her son's daughters and addresses them with nick names, the issue is - She is not consistent in the addressing.

From episode 1, I have seen that she calls either of the girls with either of the names. Since Nimmi is in more scenes than Preeti, I have seen Shanti address her as both 'Choti Rani' & 'Bitto Rani'!

At this point, I don't think it is the character, but the actor, Krutika Desai, who is messing it up. Krutika being a great actor, it is kinda weird that she is not consist in addressing these girls. In a rush to finish off the episodes probably no one from the production team is correcting her while shooting?

If anyone from the channel or the production/writing team is reading this, please take this feedback to Krutika and request her to be consistent with her nick names.

The names are nice though.

I have not seen her mess up actually. I have only heard her use that name for Nimmi. And Kousalya is often seen calling Nimmi as Bitto. so Bitto rani is definitely Nimmi's nick name. But choti rani.. is also Nimmi because she is the younger one.
Dadi has always called Preeti as Bitiya rani.. and makes it specially sweet because Preeti is an earning member of the family.

And she has a very special name for Shivam... bullet Raja. :D

She does not call any of her daughter's children with such nick names...but her son's children are either Rani or Raja. lol. Ironic.

I actually always interpreted those nicknames as being kinda mocking? Idk. Its obvs she prefers Sarla's kids to Raghav's kids.

Like she calls Nimmi rani but also expects her to do some much work as compared to Pari.

Bitto and Chotti are nicknames for Nimmi. Koushilya has used Bitto as well in addressing Nimmi.
Wheather it is mocking or not I am not sure...but given that she seems to have a special dislike for Nimmi I would agree to that.

I agree, it is not because of any love. More like a taunt.
The old lady doesn't even spare nimmi making faces. She watches everything.

i think her nicknames are just to mock these girls...otherwise she makes them slog like servants...while Srala's daughters roam around doing nothing...
the way this oldie n her daughter behave...it really irritates me...

even yesterday the whole saree tearing drama, was too much...i wished someone had slapped sarla once...
