Advertising is nothing but a form of marketing communication that employs an openly sponsored, non-personal message to promote or sell a product, service or idea. - Wikipedia

If the word advertisement reminds you of short, jingly video clips that irritate you (or at times amuse you) when your favorite television program is taking a break, then stop and think again. The world of advertisement has gone through a long journey to appear on our television screens. Progressing from black and white newspaper clippings to the evolutionary new age technology of this decade, to popping up randomly on our webpages. The progress, has been astronomical.

If you ever get down to flipping through magazines or newspapers, you will get to know the initial and raw form of advertisement: printed ads. Sharing a sizable space along with news articles, printed ads have been promoting goodies all over our magazines and newspapers. Apart from being in television, the Web world and print media, advertisements can be heard (yup! Rather than seen) transmitting along with radio programs as well. Though the modernized version of these four types of advertisements look or sound pretty impressive, it was not always the case when it first made its appearance.

The first advertisement dates back to a few hundred years BC when Egyptians used papyrus to make sales messages and wall posters. From then to now, four very influential inventions have shaped the advertising industry and. These inventions include: the printing press, radio, television and the Internet.

The printing press made the wide dissemination of information with words on paper possible, mainly advertisements in newspapers and magazines. Selling materials had to be created and thus advertising agencies were born. The very first advertising agency was borne in Philadelphia in 1841. Ads, in those days, used to be uncomplicated and rather direct in their approach like the cycle ad you can see below.

And this was the first coca-cola ad ever published. Pretty hard to accept seeing how this brand of soft drink is promoted today, right? Trust us! We are not kidding!

Pears, a soap brand, was perhaps the first to introduce a story or a theme to their advertisements.

The next big invention was the Radio.

For the first time advertising could be heard and not just seen. Soap operas, music and serial adventures populated the new medium and sales of products advertised on the air soared. This led to the invention of the infectious advertising jingles, an art form that still has its place in today's advertising industry.

Then television came along.

Print and radio had taken a back seat as Television made, for the first time, broadcasting commercials with sight, sound and motion possible. The effect of the Television on the advertising industry was remarkable. Advertising agencies not only had to learn how to produce these mini movies in units of thirty or sixty seconds, they also had to learn to effectively segment the audience and deliver the right commercial message to the right group of consumers.

With the invention of television and television programs getting popular day by day, the trend of using popular faces to promote stuffs came into play and this had a lot to do with making few particular brands more popular than others.

Here, the star of famous American Sitcom "I Love Lucy" can be seen promoting a particular brand of cigarettes, which made the sale of this product soar remarkably.

And here we see another popular face promoting an insecticide.

This trend of promoting goodies through celebrities became so popular among masses and proved to be so beneficial for companies that the particular trend has turned into a common regularity now. These days we are habituated to find our favorite faces promoting various products every now and then, be it in papers, magazines or in television, irrespective of the product type.

From garments to fragrance, from delicacies to daily needs... even a telecom company needs popular faces to promote their network.

As we saw, with time, Advertisements have come a long way and have gone through a remarkable evolution.

To know for good or bad, scroll down to the next post!

Down the years, advertisements have evolvedsignificantly.

Looking back at advertisements from those days, producers seemed to have a very clouded view ofconsumer behavior, which definitely is not the case anymore. A large number of advertisements from a couple of decades before evinced an evidently sexist approach. Of course, it can't be ignored that at that time, people lived in a predominantly chauvinistic society.

Ergo, those advertisements worked well towards drawing the attention of prospective male customers, while conveniently ignoring the existence of the female society.

So what has changed?

Present-day producers make use of studies of consumer behavior in the most efficient way possible in their commercials. A successful business is all about having the right advertising. At the end of the day, the choices that consumers make control the success of a business. But here's the catch. It's a one-way benefit. In reality, we're only making decisions based on what we seesuperficially. The producers only show us what we want to see. The sad reality is, for the most part, we'll only come to know of the cons of a product after we buy it.

Sexism is no longer the USP of producers. It's more of a sex appeal now. Though inane, we must admit, it does work great for the promotion of a business. Despite the fact that the advertisement reveals absolutely no meritsof the product itself, we still end up buying it. From alcohol to perfumes and even burgers, all you need is a skimpily dressed woman on the cover and voila, your stocks are rocketing.

Children have always been used as an instrument insuccessful marketing. Children influence almost every decision of their parents. What cereal to buy, where to go on a day off and even the color of the paint on the walls in their houses. There's nothing that a well constructedadvertisement can't do to stop a child from pushing his parents into buying that product. If the advertisement gets through to the youngsters, the producers pretty much have gotten through to their main targets, the adults.

Another major factor producers are targeting is the self-esteem of the consumers. Again, this works like a charm. A product which fits into this category with ease, would befairness creams. Advertisements have instilled a strong notion in the minds of a large number of people that it is rather a disgrace to be dark-skinned. Having tag lines like, 'For men who want zyada' and implying that you will be a 'perfect match' with your would-be husband only when you have fair skin does just that.

Psychological studies state that most decisions people make are decisions we make subconsciously. We don'treally look into the pros and cons of buying every single product out there. Our decisions are inclined towards things by what what we see at face value. It could very well depend upon even just the colors used in the commercial or the brand ambassador. And this is where we as consumers end up being exploited. Once we to learn to look at the bigger picture, to make decisions based on what is, than what is shown to be, that maybe would be the beginning of the suppression of exploitativeadvertising.

"A good advertisement is one which sells the product without drawing attention to itself." - David Ogilvy

The word reminds me of Advertisements on IF. Ad blocker warnings. Four animated advertisements that contain animation and hogs up resources. Advertisements which tell me how many hot women are willing to meet me in my area. Advertisements that remind me of what happened to Times of India and other sites and how it's backfiring on their page view counts. Ahh advertisements.

Honestly. This Ad Blocking nonsense is becoming equally (if not more) annoying as the actual ads on this site.
