And the mountains echoed
by Khaled Hosseini

Afghanistan, 1952. Abdullah and his sister Pari live with their father and stepmother in the small village of Shadbagh. Their father, Saboor, is constantly in search of work and they struggle together through poverty and brutal winters. To Adbullah, Pari, as beautiful and sweet-natured as the fairy for which she was named, is everything. More like a parent than a brother, Abdullah will do anything for her, even trading his only pair of shoes for a feather for her treasured collection. Each night they sleep together in their cot, their skulls touching, their limbs tangled.

One day the siblings journey across the desert to Kabul with their father. Pari and Abdullah have no sense of the fate that awaits them there, for the event which unfolds will tear their lives apart; sometimes a finger must be cut to save the hand.

This Author has the ability to captivate and transport the heart and soul through time and space. Yes, because he managed to fill the pages of life and feeling, to tell stories of pain and suffering but also of hope and redemption. The story spans six decades of Afghan history (1949-2010), from the reign of Zahir Shah, Russian occupation, since the proclamation of the Islamic Republic attack on the Twin Tower.
Similarly, the fate of the two brothers Pari and Abdullah opens the door to a tumultuous whirlwind of stories and characters.

Through the evocative power of words, the author builds unforgettable characters. Among all I particularly loved Nabi, chauffeur and faithful servant, haunted by the specter of guilt that goes through with his long existence much of the novel.

"And the Mountains Echoed" talks about choices and suffering, sin and loneliness, mistakes and regrets, but above all there is about love. Love declined in all its nuances, love that generates suffering and sacrifice, love that cheats and hurts, love that gives joy and hope.
