Hello friends if i am not wrong most of us are cricket enthusiasts, hence an India Pakistan match acquires the centre stage and draws the peak of emotional outburst whenever these two nations meet on the cricketing field. . We still feel traumatised when we hear the the sad story of
Javed Miandad's last ball six in Sharjah in 1986, which deprived us from the Asia cup. 28 years laters i.e. when Afridi hit two sixes on Ashwin's ball foiling India's remotest chances of winning the trophy, 67 students of Kashmir,who cheered, were expelled from a private university in Meerut on charges of sedition. this is certainly not lawful and the action taken by the local authorities and the university leaves us in a sense of discontent towards the action.
The students in the height of their enthusiasm shouted slogans in favour of Pakistan. Does cheering for a rival nation amounts to anti nationalism. India is a tolerant nation of dissent and diversity. Treating those students as a threat to our nation's security is hyperbolic.
The enquiry held on the students resulted in their suspension indefinitely as the apology demanded by the VC was not submitted. The students patriotism were questioned just because they were from Kashmir as such perpetually suspect. The chief minister of the state has termed the entire action as silly. Such action goes against the spirit of cricket. Treatment of such type is sheer melodrama and paranoid. Freedom of speech is a fundamental right. The students in the height of excitement if shouted slogans to cheer a rival country how does it tantamount to sedition. Their career have come to a stumbling block because of the suspension. Those giving hatred speeches are allowed to contest election and an ordinary and irrelevant incident of merriment by the students is called for jeopardising their own career and also posing threat to a country. This is how our state machinery works. Catch hold of petty and innocent people, make mountain out of a mole and then grab the media attention with the idea to win accolades.
Sedition is an act of threat against security of a state. Merely by clapping ,cheering how can one be targetted as a threat to the nation. Such actions raise questions on our democratic rights . We are called as secular and tolerant nation,but the controversial action raises questions on our secular principles. Wish the government releases the students and take action against the university who failed to understand that university is an apostle of learning ,discussion and debate rather acting like a ruthless administrator. Timely action is needed as this act poses a threat to the confidence and diversity of a university and a laughter of the indian democracy.
The sooner we rectify such blunders the earlier the cross border tensions will be eased.
