Which Was The Most Offensive/Sacrilegious Episode? (Just for Fun!)

There were a few times that this forum lit up with members saying that what they had just seen on Mehandī Hai Racanevālī was unacceptable; it was dangerous, it made fun of a serious issue, or just "sent the wrong message." Now that the show is over, just for fun, let's make a list of episodes that we found offensive or sacrilegious, and try to rank them.

I'll start with these:

March 2: Raghav invades Pallavi's home at night, abducts her, and ties her in front of a truck. Viewers are expected to sympathize with Raghav's circumstances, and cheer for a romantic pairing of the male aggressor and female victim. Raghav disrespects a blood donation by throwing it at the wall, just to be dramatic.

March 8: Raghav performs MahāŚivarātri pūjā after a night of binge-drinking, and flings the sanctified garland instead of offering it to Pārvatī.

April 8: When Raghav chokes, instead of showing viewers how to perform the Heimlich maneuver and save a life, it becomes an excuse for Pallavi to sit on him and pummel his back while lively music plays.

June 3: Raghav has been undressed by Farhad; Pallavi's joke, Raghav's pejorative use of "double track" and "aisā-vaisā," and Jaya's reaction are all homophobic.

June 14: Kirti, an adult woman choosing to leave the house, is physically attacked by her mother and brother. Instead of informing viewers how to help a woman escape such an abusive family, the dialogue focusses on Raghav feeling disrespected and Pallavi having to reassure him that only he matters to her. Months later (September 9), Kirti's mother and brother plot to force her into a marriage, unlawfully imprison her, and when she escapes, take out their frustrations on Raghav's wife. At no point does the show acknowledge that this is domestic abuse.

June 29: Raghav plays three rounds of Russian Roulette, ready to throw away his life and leave Pallavi a widow, because Ved said, "Be a man!" Each round is juxtaposed with Pallavi's unappreciated Vaṭa Sāvitrī rituals for Raghav's long life. (Pallavi's prayer that any calamity should fall upon her, not Raghav, is answered after a few months, when she takes a bullet for him.) Sunny's remark that Vaṭa Sāvitrī is for Maharashtrians, and he's Panjabi, disrespects Sāvitrī, who was from Madra (modern Panjab)! Raghav breaks his fast early with alcohol.

July 2: After viewing the car that he preserved from a hit-and-run, Raghav drives himself home and stumbles into the house drunk, as if the collision is no reason to avoid dangerous driving. Pallavi's getting drunk and climbing up to a dangerous height is portrayed as funny.

In your opinion, what made these episodes unacceptable, dangerous, trivializing a serious issue, or sending a wrong message?

I can guess that Pallavi treating infertility/impotency as a joke was offensive to you, but how did Raghav's accusation of Pallavi go beyond acceptable drama?

June 14th one . I hated how Pallavi was made the vamp here who supposedly helped their adult spoilt bratty daughter flee the house and marry a loser . Now RR was ready to get her married to the same loser few months ago and it was Pals who saved him from doing the blunder and now he’s blaming her who in turn was locked in the room by his own sister . Ridiculous

Ridiculous

That happened on and after September 9. I know, Kirti was a spiteful and selfish character for a while, but I wouldn't call her spoilt or bratty. She's a working woman who supported her mother until Ammā decided to move in with Raghav. Suddenly, Ammā who used to proclaim her faith in Kirti and call Raghav a gūṇḍa spun around and said (on June 14), "When Raghav comes home, he'll fix Kirti!" Kirti didn't want Raghav to spoil her, but when she wouldn't take diamond jewelry from him, he passed it off as a gift from Pallavi. Kirti consistently wanted to move out, especially after the first time Raghav hit her, and Kirti was ready to move into Sunny's small apartment.

Raghav locking Kirti in her room was a violation of her constitutional right to freedom of movement and personal liberty, a crime called wrongful confinement, punishable under the Indian Penal Code, Sections 340 and 342. Jaya and Pallavi became accessories to Raghav's crime by not helping Kirti.

Kirti has good reasons to resent Raghav: Raghav knew that Krishna Rao had embezzled the villagers' money; Raghav was persuaded that "this is how you get rich" and accepted more money from Krishna Rao in exchange for his silence (i.e. Raghav became an accessory to the crime); after three months, when Raghav had used his commission to pay for Ajit's respiratory problems and Jaya's dance academy, the mob figured out the crime that Raghav was hiding, and killed Kirti's father and brother.

This was the story that Raghav told Pallavi, but by the time Jaya reacted to Pallavi's assertion that Krishna Rao had fooled Raghav, their conclusion was that Raghav had done nothing wrong; Raghav was a victim. Raghav's dishonest and exploitative business for the past ten years, following Krishna Rao's example, was forgotten by Jaya, but not by Kirti.

On the show, when Kirti told Raghav that his love for her is an act, Raghav responded by hitting her, thereby proving her point. In my fan fiction, I wanted Raghav's love for Kirti to be more sincere and involuntary. So, when Raghav finds out that Kirti is against him, he's shocked by Kirti's approach, but not by her animosity, and his concern for Kirti comes before any other response. In my story, Raghav is deeply hurt by Kirti's words, and has violent urges, but he doesn't want Kirti to be afraid of him, or ashamed of anything that she has done. I think that Raghav and Kirti having to talk distrustfully, when both of them yearn to be close, is more dramatic than Raghav hitting Kirti.

I agree with you that it was illogical of Jaya and Raghav to blame Pallavi for Kirti's escape. They were already stupid to think that making a matrimonial profile for Kirti (which is identity theft, a crime) and ordering Kirti to meet Jatin was the way to get rid of Sunny. They predictably humiliated themselves by inviting a matrimonial prospect for a woman who has a boyfriend. The irony is that Kirti wanted Jaya's blessing and wasn't ready to marry Sunny until Jaya compounded the problem and drove Kirti to take the plunge. Jaya's and Raghav's pique with Pallavi was extremely petty, considering that Raghav feels absolved of his many crimes against Pallavi, and Jaya is the one whose miscommunication led to the forced marriage.

That was February 18 when Harish identified Pallavi to Raghav. Harish wasn't making a video of Kirti; Pallavi was the one who started recording Harish. But I agree that Raghav should have felt grateful that Kirti's friend is protective of her. Or, he should have plotted to get closer to Kirti by ingratiating himself with her friend Pallavi.
