There were a few times that this forum lit up with members saying that what they had just seen on Mehandī Hai Racanevālī was unacceptable; it was dangerous, it made fun of a serious issue, or just "sent the wrong message." Now that the show is over, just for fun, let's make a list of episodes that we found offensive or sacrilegious, and try to rank them.
I'll start with these:
March 2: Raghav invades Pallavi's home at night, abducts her, and ties her in front of a truck. Viewers are expected to sympathize with Raghav's circumstances, and cheer for a romantic pairing of the male aggressor and female victim. Raghav disrespects a blood donation by throwing it at the wall, just to be dramatic.
March 8: Raghav performs MahāŚivarātri pūjā after a night of binge-drinking, and flings the sanctified garland instead of offering it to Pārvatī.
April 8: When Raghav chokes, instead of showing viewers how to perform the Heimlich maneuver and save a life, it becomes an excuse for Pallavi to sit on him and pummel his back while lively music plays.
June 3: Raghav has been undressed by Farhad; Pallavi's joke, Raghav's pejorative use of "double track" and "aisā-vaisā," and Jaya's reaction are all homophobic.
June 14: Kirti, an adult woman choosing to leave the house, is physically attacked by her mother and brother. Instead of informing viewers how to help a woman escape such an abusive family, the dialogue focusses on Raghav feeling disrespected and Pallavi having to reassure him that only he matters to her. Months later (September 9), Kirti's mother and brother plot to force her into a marriage, unlawfully imprison her, and when she escapes, take out their frustrations on Raghav's wife. At no point does the show acknowledge that this is domestic abuse.
June 29: Raghav plays three rounds of Russian Roulette, ready to throw away his life and leave Pallavi a widow, because Ved said, "Be a man!" Each round is juxtaposed with Pallavi's unappreciated Vaṭa Sāvitrī rituals for Raghav's long life. (Pallavi's prayer that any calamity should fall upon her, not Raghav, is answered after a few months, when she takes a bullet for him.) Sunny's remark that Vaṭa Sāvitrī is for Maharashtrians, and he's Panjabi, disrespects Sāvitrī, who was from Madra (modern Panjab)! Raghav breaks his fast early with alcohol.
July 2: After viewing the car that he preserved from a hit-and-run, Raghav drives himself home and stumbles into the house drunk, as if the collision is no reason to avoid dangerous driving. Pallavi's getting drunk and climbing up to a dangerous height is portrayed as funny.
