Obsession doesn't just mean that he's always going to care about her. People who are at his level, they could flip between caring and not caring IMO.
EDIT: I should also say, he's maybe more obsessed with having her, claiming her, than actually loving her. He just claims it as love bc that's what he thinks will win him points.
