So basically todays challenge was everybody cooks with the same ingredients (except Aruna maiyya). I didn’t understand the point of everyone choosing a different cloche.
Anyway, Priyanka got diary and her cloche had ghee, she kept it. It was a great ingredient. Second was Suvarna, she got minced meat and only changed it for Aruna, the second cloche had rawas (fish), Nayanjyoti’s cloche had baking, Kamaldeeps cloche had chayote squash that she only kept because everyone else was comfortable with it. Aruna went last and got sichuan peppers, everyone was ok with it, but she wasn’t. Her second cloche had basil.
Then comes an announcement that Aruna will use paneer! If Aruna was allowed to use paneer, that option should’ve been made available to the others too. Maybe we’d have seen a few more variations of kalakand. Since chef Manav made kalakand and won, the contestants think making kalakand will make them win (did happen for KDK)! Seriously there’s hardly any creativity this season.
Talking about the dishes -
Suvarna - her plate looked like a mess. Even a 10 year old would plate better. She’s great at Maharashtrian flavours and should’ve aced this challenge. She clearly hadn’t used chayote squash before and was clueless what to do with it. I wish she’d atleast done something more with her fish, and then maybe just serving the squash as a salad with some chatpata masala.
Kamaldeep - she chose to make Amritsari machchi, with a chayote squash salad and hollaindaise flavoured with basil. She made an everyday dish, where was the innovation? She just paired it with something different.
A squash used as salad wasn’t anything new either. Maybe it tasted great, but it wasn’t a dish good enough dish to win the immunity pin.
Priyanka - I really liked her thought. To make a fish flan, which is not common or done before on the show. I forgot what she did with her other ingredients. But full marks for innovation. The judges felt her dish didn’t have enough flavour.
Nayanjyoti - I loved how he made the pasta - those coloured lines, the shape, it looked lovely. It’s a pity his dish wasn’t liked.
Aruna - she stuffed kalakand made with paneer in poached chayote squash. She didn’t even know how to poach, needed help from those in the balcony. Again her dish wasn’t an innovation. First we’ve seen kalakand for the third consecutive challenge, secondly stuffed kalakand is nothing new.
During tasting except for Kamaldeep, everybody’s dish had quite some negatives. Still Aruna’s dish was the second best - when the sugars hadn’t penetrated the chayote squash. Something that basic.
I don’t think any dish deserved to win the immunity pin today. Firstly it was an easy challenge, then there was nothing unique about the dish, also presentation was quite bad.
