Kamadeva then saw Parvati arriving there accompanied by her companions. She was looking divine in her beauty. Just at that moment lord Shiva too had come out of his meditational trance. Kamadeva thought that it was the most appropriate moment to take a chance and do his duty.

Kamadeva struck lord Shiva with his 'Kamabana' which did have a deep impact on him. Lord Shiva was struck by the awesome beauty of Parvati and his heart became full of passion for her. But at the same time he was surprised at the sudden change in his attitude. He realised that it was an act of Kamadeva.

Kamadeva Reduced to Ashes

Lord Shiva looked all around him. He saw kamadeva standing towards his left side, with a bow and arrows in his hands. Now he was fully convinced that it was indeed an act of Kamadeva.

Kamadeva became terrified, he started remembering god, but before the deities could come to his rescue the third eye of lord Shiva got opened and Kamadeva was reduced to ashes.

Parvati got scarred after seeing Lord Shiva in such a ferocious state. She went home along with her companions. Rati- the wife of Kamadeva wept unconsolably.

Devas consoled Rati saying that by the grace of lord Shiva, her husband would be alive once again. After that the devas went near lord Shiva and did his worship. They told him that it was not the fault of Kamadeva, as he had acted in accordance with the aspirations of the devas.. They also told him the mystery of Tarakasur's death. The devas then requested him to make Kamadeva alive once again.

Lord Shiva told the devas that Kamadeva would take birth as the son of Krishna and Rukmini in the era of dwapar. A demon by the name of Shambar would throw him off in the sea. He would kill that demon and marry Rati, who too would be living in that city near the sea.

After the death of Kamadeva the whole world started to feel the wrath of lord Shiva's fury. All the living creatures became terrified. They went to lord Brahma and prayed to him, to save them from Shiva's wrath.

Lord Brahma went to lord Shiva and conveyed their request to him. Lord Shiva agreed to relinquish his anger. Lord Brahma then carried Shiva's 'fury' to the sea . He requested the sea to posess it until the final annihilation. The sea agreed to do this.

This way Lord Shiva's fury entered into the sea and all the living creatures felt a sign of relief.

Narada Preaches Parvati

When Parvati reached her home, she became very sad as she was unable to bear the sorrow of Shiva's separation. Sage Narada arrived there. Her father Himavan narrated the whole story to him

Sage Narada then gave the five lettered mantra - "OM NAMAH SHIVAYto her and he also instructed her to do penance. Parvati's heart was filled up with new enthusiasm.

Parvati does Penance

After taking the permission of her parents and relinquishing all of her ornaments and royal apparels, Parvati went to the same place where Lord Shiva himself had done penance. This sacred place was situated at the Himalayas, from where the holy Ganges originated. Parvati 's companions Jaya and Vijaya accompanied her.

Parvati's penance became severere day by day. She did penance for three thousand years by chanting the five lettered mantra- OM NAMAH SHIVAY and performing other kinds of austerities.

Becoming impressed by her tremendous penance even the deities flocked to see her. Parvati did her penance, surrounded by fire on all her sides during summer. In rainy season she did her penance without any shelter and during winter she used to do penance by immersing herself in neck deep water.

The Deities go to Lord Shiva

Parvati's power created such heat in the atmosphere that the whole world started to burn. All the deities & sages went to lord Brahma and told him about the effects, Parvati's penance was having on all the three worlds.

Lord Brahma accompanied by all of them went to Vishnuji. They visited the place where Parvati was doing her penance. They realized that lord Shiva was the only remedy and hence all of them went to lord Shiva and made salutations to him.

Siva's approval

Lord Shiva enquired about the purpose of their arrival. Lord Vishnu then revealed to him that how distressed and tormented were the deities by the activities of the demon - Tarakasur.

He also told Shiva that he could be killed by such a person, who is born out of the parentage of Shiva and Parvati. Lord Vishnu then told Shiva about Parvati's penance.

Initially lord Shiva refused to accept their request but when the deities continued with their prayers , he ultimately gave his consent. The deities became immensely pleased.

For any effort to get its proper reward, the effort has to be evaluated. Such evaluation depends on the test. The moment approached for testing the strength and essence of Parvati's penannce. Her tapas had this effect:

Siva's heart melted towardsParvati. His Sakti is really making him submit before her undaunted love for him.

kindness did blossom in Shiva. His mind was softened. Still he wanted to test her mind. He sent the seven sages known as the 'Saptarishis' to find out her firmness.

Parvati saluted the sages who went to her. Her friends Jaya and Vijaya rendered hospitality. The sages asked of Parvati the reason for her tapas and who herpreceptor was. She narrated everything.

And 'the sages replied "Well, listening to the words of Narada, you went the wrong way. Don't do this penance for Shiva. Nor should you marry him."

But she did not heed their words. She had already decided that qualities mattered more than appearance. She told them of her resolve thus - "I feel that I am already married to Shiva. If he does not accept me, I'm not going to marry any other person. There cannot be two marriages for me."

The sages were pleased with her firmness. They blessed her by saying "May your wish succeed!" and went to Kailasa. They narrated all this to Shiva. They said that it would not be proper to subject her to any more pain with the pretext of testing her mind. But Shiva thought that he should himself test her firmness.

He changed his real form for that, purpose. He disguised himself as a young celibate and went to Parvati's penance- grove. He sat in the shade of a small mango tree near her. Thinking that a Brahman youth had come as a guest, Parvati's friends went to him and bowed before him. They gave him water to wash his feet and then some good fruits to eat.

Then the youth pointed at Parvati and asked them, "Who is she? Why is she performing this penance though so young? Is there none to stop her penance? None to check her and advise her?"

Hearing these words of his, Parvati became angry. She stopped her meditation, put aside the rosary, and stared at the youth.

Then the young man, pretending to be sympathetic, began asking several questions. "At the prime of your youth, why are you engaged in this penance in this forest, ignoring cold and heat and rain, hunger and thirst?" he asked.

With Parvati's permission Vijaya told him everything and said, "My friend thus desires to wed Shiva and hence she is doing penance."

Thedisguised youth laughed loudly and said. "O, I understand. What more can I say? It's your will and pleasure. So let me go."

When he started to go, Parvati went near him and saluting him, asked thus "Please wait. Can you not give good advice to me in this matter? Can you not guide me as to how I can win Shiva's favour?"

"Listen then," the youth said. "You are innocent. Though a young maiden you have no wisdom. Why do you wish to marry that three-eyed person? What an ill fated person you are!

His home, his appearance, his nature are all peculiar. He lives in the burial-ground. His ornament is the snake! The garland he wears is of skulls. His weapon is a trident and he wears only animal skin.

Most of his hairs are s catered in the sky and the rest are matted locks. He smears ash all over the body! With Ganga and the moon fixed on his head he is severely cold.

He moves about on a bull , with demons and spirits as his companions. He is also a beggar. You are beautiful and tender, whereas he is ugly and inauspicious. Think properly and don't marry him."

Hearing these words, Parvati got angry. Her brows were knit in a frown and eyes were red. Not able to hear this abuse of Shiva, with trembling lips she said, "Vily man, you do not know anything about Shiva.

Of course the conduct of great persons will not be like that of the common men.Ignorant persons who cannot understand it criticize like this. Shiva's glory cannot be had by anyone else. Those who trust Him escape from sins.

Though Shiva looks a destitute, he can confer upon others all the riches. What if he lives in the burial-ground? He is the lord of all three worlds. His looks may differ from others. But he is the abode of beauty. His name itself is endowed with auspiciousness.

He is the universal Lord. Though he sits on a bullock, his feet are touched by Indra mounted on his elephant, Airavata. There is no need for so much talk. My mind is firmly rooted in Shiva. None can change it. I am fully aware of Shiva's form, qualities and greatness. He has neither deformity nor any defect."

On hearing Parvati say thus the young man's lips moved as if he would again speak. Parvati called her friend and said, "those who abuse great ones are sinners, people who listen to that abuse become sinners too. This wicked man is about to speak bad wordsagain about Siva.Send him away. Or I myself will leave this place."

So saying, Parvati started to leave the place. Suddenly the youth in disguise assumed Shiva's form, and held Parvati's hand.

The form Parvati saw in her dreams stood smiling at her. She blushed and bowed her head. Shiva told her, "0 thou bowed beauty, I am pleased with your penance and your love. You have won over my mind. I have caused you much pain by testing you in many ways. You must pardon that.

You won me with your devotion. I am enslaved to you. Now come, let's go to our abode, Kailasa."

Please marry me according to sacred rites,Ask the permission of my parents.. replied Parvati. Shiva agreed and Parvati returned home.

The Marriage

Shiva called the seven great sages (saptarshis) and asked them to go to Himavan as his messengers. The message was that he wished to marry Himavan's daughter Parvati. Himavan was delighted to see the sages and even more delighted to learn that Shiva wanted to marry Parvati. A date was fixed for the marriage.

The day of the marriage dawned. Gandharvas (singers of heaven) sang and apsara (dancers of heaven) danced. All the gods came to Kailasa to accompany Shiva on the procession. Himavan had also got ready. He had built many gates in front of his house and had placed flags on them. The beauty of Himavan's residence at that time is impossible to describe. When the procession arrived at the residence, Parvati's mother Menaka rushed out.

Let me see Shiva, she exclaimed. Let me see my son-in-law. My daughter Parvati has performed tapasya to obtain Shiva as a husband. He must be exceedingly handsome. She said hopefully.

The first person Menaka saw was the king of the gandharvas. Vishvavasu was very handsome and, at first, Menaka thought that this was Shiva. But when she was told that this was only a singer who entertained Shiva, she thought that Shiva would be more handsome.

Then her eyes fell down on the handsome Kubera, the god of wealth, and she thought that this had to be Shiva. Kubera was more attractive than Vishvavasu. But Menaka was told that this was not Shiva either.

Then came Varuna, more attractive than Kubera. But this was not Menaka's son-in-law. Nor was her son-in-law the great god Yama, handsomer than Varuna. The handsome gods Indra, Surya and Chandra passed by. But Narada told Menaka that these were not Shiva, they were simply Shiva's servants.

Menaka's joy knew no bounds. If these were the servants, what was the master going to be like? She mistook Brahma, Vishnu and Brihaspati for Shiva, and each time Narada told her that she was wrong.

Where then was Shiva? Finally Shiva came and Narada pointed him out to Menaka. At the sight of her son-in-law, Menaka fell unconscious.

Shiva was surrounded by ghosts on all sides. Their faces were fierce, their complexions were dark and they made a tremendous uproar.

Shiva himself rode on bull. He had three eyes, five faces and ten arms. He was smeared with ashes and the moon adorned his forehead. He was dressed in a tiger's skin and a garland of skulls hung around his neck. No wonder Menaka fainted.

When she recovered, she began to lament. She scolded Himavan Narada and Parvati for her misfortune. Brahma, the other gods, and the sages tried to pacify Menaka. But to no avail.

I will not permit my daughter to be married to Shiva, Menaka said. I will give her poison instead. I will throw her into a well and kill her. I will chop her up into pieces with a weapon. I will hurl her into the sea. I will kill myself. I will get Parvati married to someone else. Not to Shiva.

Parvati resolved, I shall not marry anyone other than Shiva. Is a jackal a fit replacement for a lion? She asked her mother.

Vishnu then tried to pacify Menaka. But this did not succeed either. Fianlly Narada asked Shiva to display his beautiful form and Shiva obliged.

This form is exhibited only to those who are very faithful to Shiva. Everyone was charmed by this beautiful form, even Menaka. His body shone like a thousand suns and a crown sparkled on his head. His clothes glittered and the lustre of his jewels put the stars to shame.Mahadev Parameswar looked more handsome than God of love or anyone else.

Menaka begged forgiveness for her foolishness and now there were no further obstacles to the marriage. Under Brahma's supervision, the marriage ceremony took place Shiva and Parvati returned to Kailasa.

One day Siva sought the permission of Himavan to go back. Everybody became sad at the prospect of Shiva's departure. Especially Maina who was very saddened by this news. At last it was time for Shiva to depart for Kailash, accompanied by Parvati.

Lord Shiva and Parvati were happily enjoying their martial bliss unaware of the eagerness with which the devas were awaiting the arrival of their progeny.

Tarakasur - the demon continued tormenting the devas. When their miseries became unbearable they went to lord Brahma to seek his help. All of them then went to lord Vishnu. They told him that even after passing of such a long duration of time, Parvati and Shiva had not yet become parents. They requested lord Vishnu to remind Shiva about the purpose behind his marriage.

Initially lord Vishnu showed his disinclination to disturb Shiva's martial bliss, but when the devas insisted he went to Shiva accompanied by all of them. All of them prayed to Shiva and Parvati. The devas then requested Shiva to make his contribution for the destruction of Tarakasur.

Shiva understood everything. Some drops of his semen fell down on the ground as he suddenly came out to meet the devas, leaving Parvati inside

On the request of Devas Agni transformed shelf into the form of a pigeon and pecked up those drops of semen.

Right then Parvati arrived there and became extremely furious on seeing the semen going waste. She cursed the devas that their respective wives would remain issue less as a result of their mindless acts.

Agni was having burning sensation in his stomach because of the Shiva's semen. Lord Shiva advised him to transfer it into the womb of any noble woman. Agni followed the instruction and injected the semen into the body of six women through the pores of the hair on their body. Those were the wives of six sages,(Except Arundhati the wives of other sages)

Those women could not bear the extreme lustre of the Shiva's semen. They went to Himachal and evacuated it into the flowing Ganga. River Ganga carried it with her current but unable to bear it further established it amidst bushes of reed (Sarkanda, Saravan)

Instantaneously a beautiful child manifested from it. His birth made all the devas extremely joyous .Shiva and Parvati felt immensely pleased on hearing the birth of their son. It was the sixth day (bright half of the lunar month) of the hindu month of Margashirsha. Hence the day is called Skanda Shashti. The boy was Kartikeya.

Kartikeya

Sage Vishwamitra arrived at the spot where the child had manifested. On the repeated insistence of the child, Vishwamitra performed his purification rites and named him 'Guha'.

The divine child blessed Vishwamitra and bestowed divine knowledge to him. He also blessed him to become famous as 'Brahmarshi'.

Agnideva arrived there and gave a divine weapon named 'Shakti' to that child. Guha went to the Kroncha mountain and banged his weapon on it. The mountain could not bear the effect of the blow and started crumbling down. Innumerable demons living on that mountain came to kill him. But the child killed all of them by his weapon.

Indra felt insecure of the child and attacked him with his devas. He stuck Kumara on the right side which resulted into the manifestation of a very powerful entity named 'Shakh'. Indra again assaulted him on the left side of his body, from which manifested an extremely powerful entity named 'Vishakh'. Indra assaulted Guha for the third time- this time his chest was the target. From this third blow of Indra manifested 'Naigam'.

Skanda accompanied by all the three powerful entities- Shakh, Vishakh and Naigam attacked Indra and his army, but they fled away.

The Krittikas

Six goddesses arrived on the scene. All of them tried to feed that small child out of affection. They started quarelling among themselves. Right then they were surprised to see the child appearing with six heads. Now their problems were solved. Each of the goddesses fed their breast milk to the child. They took Guha with them and brought him up with great love and care. Guha later on became famous as Kartikeya.

One day, Parvati curiously asked Shiva about his semen which had fallen on the ground. Lord Shiva summoned the devas and asked them about it. The deities narrated the whole story. Both Shiva and Parvati were very pleased to know about Kartikeya.

Lord Shiva then ordered his Ganas to bring Kartikeya from the possession of Kritikas. The Ganas reached Badrikasharam where Kritikas lived. When Kritikas saw the Ganas they became very frightened but Kartikeya gave them solace. The Ganas requested Kartikeya to come along with them.

Kartikeya happily took permission from his mothers and proceeded to meet Shiva and Parvati.

At the time or Kartikeya's departure, the mothers had become very emotional. Kartikeya consoled them. He then boarded the beautiful chariot which had been sent by Parvati to him.

Shiv and Parvati waited impatiently to meet their son.

When Kartikeya reached Kailash mountain, he was given a royal reception

Parvati hugged her son to her heart while Shiva looked at them endearingly. He also took his son closer and blessed him.

. The whole atmosphere was filled up with joy. Everybody was celebrating. Each of the devas presented him their respective weapons to him.

Kartikeya narrated a story connected with himself:-

"One day a brahmin, whose name was Narad came to me and requested me to help him find his he-goat which had got lost. He told me that the goat was supposed to be offered as the sacrifice.

"If the goat was not found, my vow would remain unfulfilled." Said Narad

I went in search of that goat. I found it in the Vishnuloka where it was creating nuisance . When the goat saw me, it tried to attack me with its sharp horns. I climbed on its back. After travelling through all the three worlds, the goat returned back to his original place. I climbed down from its back.

Narada arrived and demanded his goat. I told him that his Yagya had been accomplished by my blessings and there was no need to sacrifice the poor goat. Narada - the brahmin went back satisfied.

All the devas were so excited to attack Tarakasur with Kartikeya as their leader. Kartikeya took the blessings of his parents and Narayan. He then proceeded to the battle field where Tarakasur was waiting impatiently to finish of his rivals.

Fierce battle started with Tarakasur hitting Indra severely with his weapon. That blow was so severe that Indra fell down unconscious. All the 'Lokpalas' met the same fate. After that Tarakasur fought with Veerbharda and made him unconscious.

Lord Brahma requested Kartikeya to fight with Tarakasur as nobody except him would be able to kill him.

On being instructed by lord Brahma Kartikeya came forward to fight with Tarakasur. Tarakasur ridiculed the devas for taking the shield of a small child.

"If he gets killed by me, the responsibility should lie on you." Thundered Tarakasur.

A fierce battle started between both of them in which both of them got injured. At last seeing an opportune moment, Kartikeya hit Tarakasur on his chest with his weapon- Shakti. The blow proved to be fatal and as a result Tarakasur died.

Kartikeya's feat was hailed by all the devas. After killing Tarakasur, Kartikeya went to mother Parvati, who affectionately took him into her lap. He was eulogized by all the devas. Siva smiled at his son with pride. Shivputr made the prophecy come true.

The mountain - Kraunch, who was tormented by the activities of the demon named Banasur, went to Kartikeya and narrated his woeful tales.

Kartikeya threw his weapon - Shakti in the direction in which Banasur lived. The weapon banged right on target and returned back to him. Banasur was burnt to ashes. Kraunch went back being immensely pleased.

The mountain - Kraunch established three Shivalingas to please lord Shiva. The names of these three Shivalingas were - Kumareshwar, Pratigyeshwar and Kapaleswar.

KARTIKEY STORY FROM MAHA BHRAT

Indra saved Devasena, the beautiful daughter of Prajapati from a demon called Kesin. After that he took her to Brahma and requested him to find a bridegroom for her.

Brahma replied that someone special in birth will be her husband in due course of time. That powerful being will be the husband of this lady and the joint leader of thy forces with thee.'

Thus addressed, the lord of the celestials and the lady bowed unto him and then repaired to the place where those great Brahmanas, the powerful celestial Rishis, Vasistha and others, lived.

And with Indra at their head, the other gods also, desirous of drinking the Soma beverage, repaired to the sacrifices of those Rishis to receive their respective shares of the offerings.

Having duly performed the ceremonies with the bright blazing fire, those great Rishis offered oblations to the devas.. And the Adbhuta fire, that carrier of oblations, was invited with mantras.( The fire God by name Adbhuta is the carrier of oblations at that time. Agni's race is widely described in Mahabharata with their names and duties.)

Then that fire entering the sacrificial fire that had been ignited and into which various offerings were made by the Rishis with recitations of hymns, took them with him and carried them over to Devas.

And while returning from that heaven,, he observed the wives of those high-souled Rishis sleeping at their ease on their beds.

Those ladies had a complexion beautiful like that of an altar of gold, spotless like moon-rays, resembling and looking like shining stars.

On seeing those wives of the illustrious Rishis with eager eyes, Agni's mind became agitated and he was smitten with their charms.

Restraining his heart he considered it improper for him to get disturbed He said to himself," The wives of these great sages are chaste and faithful and beyond the reach of other people's desires. I am filled with desire to possess them. I cannot lawfully cast my eyes upon them, nor ever touch them when they are not filled with desire. I shall, therefore, gratify myself daily with only looking at them by becoming their Garhapatya (house-hold) fire.'( The fire that the Rishis light up daily in their houses).

The firegod thus transforming himself into a house-hold one, was highly gratified with seeing those golden complexioned ladies and touching them with his flames. Heavily influenced by their charms he stayed there for a long time, giving them his heart and filled with an intense desire for them.

Knowing that he can not win the hearts of those devoted ladies ,his own heart tortured by love, he went to a forest with the the object of destroying himself.

Swaha, the daughter of Daksha, fell in love with the fire God by then. She is waiting for a long time to detect his weak moments but that blameless lady did not succeed in finding out any weakness in the calm and collected fire-god.

But now that the god had been overpowered by his lust and despair, moving to a forest, actually tortured by the pangs of love, she thought, 'As I too am distressed with love, I shall assume the guise of the wives of the seven Rishis and fulfill my wish to posess him."

Beautiful Sivaa endowed with great virtues and a spotless character was the wife of Angiras (one of the seven Rishis)

Swaha took the form of Sivaa first and approached the Fire God. she said, 'O Agni, I am tortured with love for you. Do you think it fit to accept me? If you do not accede to my request, know that I shall destroy myself.. I am Sivaa, the wife of Angiras. I have come here according to the advice of the wives of the other Rishis, who have sent me here after due deliberation. They are also besotted with you."

Agni questioned. 'How did you know that I was tortured with love and how could the others, the beloved wives of the seven Rishis, of whom you have spoken, know this?'

Swaha replied, 'You are always a favourite with us, but we are afraid of you. Now having read your mind by instinct they have sent me to your presence. I have come here to gratify my desire. Be quick, O Agni, to accept the object of your desire and savour the bliss. my sisters. are awaiting me. I must return soon.'

Then Agni, filled with great joy and delight accepted Swaha in the guise of Sivaa and that lady joyfully cohabiting with him, held the semen virile in her hands.

And then she thought within herself that those who would observe her in that disguise in the forest, would accuse the conduct of those Pious ladies in connection with Agni. Therefore, to prevent this, she thought she should assume the disguise of a bird, and in that state she should more easily get out of the forest.

'Then assuming the disguise of a bird, she went out of the forest and reached the White Mountain Covered of heath and other plants and trees, and guarded by strange seven-headed serpents with poison in their very looks.

That white mountain is the abode of Rakshasas, male and female Pisachas, terrible spirits, and various kinds of birds and animals.

Then Swaha quickly ascending a peak of those mountains, threw that semen into a golden lake.

Then assuming successively the forms of the wives of the high-souled other Rishis, she continued to dally with Agni.

But on account of the great ascetic merit of Arundhati and her devotion to her husband (Vasishtha), she was unable to assume her form.

Swaha on the first lunar day threw six times into that lake the semen of Agni. And thrown there, it produced a male child endowed with great power.

That boy is called Skanda (cast off) it is his first name.
