I think he always held Karna in high regard because Karna was to him what ARJUN was to Yudhishthir. He did not have a brother as strong as Bheem, and Yudhishthir had 4 brothers ever loyal to him. He only had Dushashana and Ashwathama who were loyal to him while Yudhi had like four people, considering Nakul Sahdev not huge support even then he had two solid people. His 98 other bros play no role and I dont think either gave him any important support as BANS gave Y. Karna fulfilled that place. He hardly had anyone like that and he was also the answer to Arjun - Yudhi's biggest strength along with Bheem. So he naturally held him close.

See as I think he wanted Hastinapur to prosper, and for that a king was needed, options were Dury and Yudi, I guess everything suggests he would have preferred Dury in such condition.

By the time war came, Duryodhan had more than enough examples to be clear that Karna was no match for Arjun. He got defeated by him like thrice, he had no Kavach Kundal and infact he even said he would not fight under Bhishma. Duryodhan's all ways of him being used against Arjun was defeated. He still stuck to him. This cannot only be because of Arjun.

Ashwatthama was not a member in his plotting team coz some time ashwatthama had advised him 2 mend his relationship with Pandavas.

Brc mahabharat had shown better version of ashwatthama than starbharat

Dury's brothers were extremely loyal 2 him but Pandavas brother were superior

This I haven't Heard but i don't think none would be interested in him, maybe he wasn't good looking the princess didn't select him in Swayamwar. And then he had his superman Karna for his rescue. Both were abducted by Karna not by him

P.S. Chhilllii said that in Indonesian Mahabharatha, Shalya had three daughters, one each was married to Duryodhan n Karna , so along with being friends they were also SadhuBhai

I didn't mean only his plotting team, he as it is was not a part of his innermost group. Even Shakuni advised him to mend relations with Pandavas but he was in his innermost circle.

Duryodhan preferred Karna over Ashwathama, and Ashwathama wanted Karna's spot that seems to be one of the reasons for their tiff
