Definitely not made his friend seeing the capability. He was a student along with others, neither Drona nor anyone else has ever mentioned that he was better than rest, Dury was a kid, he can no way realize Karna's true potential.

Multiple instances show Duryodhan didn't have a conditional friendship

Plus it wasn't like Duryodhan made him his servant

All this remains true, why didn't he reciprocate Dury's true friendship? If he was a servant to Dury before some part of resentment would have remained in his heart

But it should not have been enough to promise kunti something which can harm Dury
