That is possible only if a woman had a child before marriage. Others may move to next class. In case of Kunti, she had Karna.

Karna surely was a better option, but only for Karnalilas (& Kunti), not for Pandu, because we're pre-occupied with love for Karna. For Pandu, Karna was nothing. Karna surely was a son of Kunti, but from the most possible lower class, which was never what Pandu desired for. So when Pandu said one class of child was needed only if the possibility of a child of a previous class was zero was there in Shastras, why would Kunti tell him 'I had a son before marriage' and ask him to accept Karna. Pandu would never have accepted Karna as he had three better options than Karna, according to him. From the Pandu-Kunti conversation, its clear that he had an upper hand in knowledge of Shastras and was impossible to convince. Besides, he did not love Kunti as much as he loved Madri. Had Madri been Karna's mother, we could've expected him to accept Karna.

First it is Pandu, then only Kunti. But if only she was dominant throughout, why did she get ready to have children from other men, especially when she repeatedly tells she loved only Pandu and wanted to bear his children? Because Pandu had upper hand in his arguement and convinced Kunti. But Kunti gains dominance only when Pandu desires for more than three children and she beautifully tricks him back with the same Shastra he used to trick her. Pandu was silenced at that point as his request was not supported by morals of Shastras he knew. So in Karna's case, Pandu's opinion clearly had dominance than that of Kunti as it was supported by traditions of those time.

Kunti had appointed spies to know the whereabouts of baby Karna after she floated him away. They had informed her that her baby reached Adhiratha's hands. Right now, I'm of the opinion that the best time for revealing his identity was at Rangabhoomi.
