In all possibility, Janamejaya knew Karna even before Vaisampayana narrated the story.. Karna as Karna was a well known figure across the nation for around 100 years by then..

The meaning of Karna's name is a confusion.

KMG says he got it after he peeled out his armor. But Bibek Debroy in his translation of the Critical edition says that Karna means the son of Vikartana ( Sun god = Vikartana)

But MN Dutt's translation matches KMG's.. so I will go with them..

As I said, peeler of skin according to the text.. There can be other meaning too which is nothing to be surprised about..

Ok fine...Won't disturb you alll with this question anymore...Its just that since he had a word as his name ,there should be some meaning of the word and a word in the same language may have double meanings but it should be more or less similar or whatever, moreover words can be given to people for eg:Diala because you look as pretty or sweet as a flower but the meaning of the word is 'flower' So 'Karna' was given during KK daan fine but the word 'Karna' means ear or tyaag/Balidan[sacrifice] ..that is what I asked...but its ok ..No more bothering...😊

Forget the fact that Karna was pandava known to him or not..but the fact that Karna knew pandavas as his brothers and had spared their lives ...was it not backstabbing from dury's POV and reason enough for his hatred.. if he had found out... It would be like someone whom he had full faith and trust on...broke his trust..there would be hurt and anger too.. yes along with the fact that he would be broken by his death as a friend.

I agree though i dont think it was a betrayel by Karna. It was more of paying off the maternal debts. IMO Karna wanted to pay off all his debts and go free of obligations . Karna had a choice and he chose to spare his brothers, if he hand not he would have been again caught in the cycle of Karma because the maternal debt would have remained. And he paid off his friends debt by dying for his cause,

So he paid off both the debts . Ultimately he we can say he was thinking more off his soul;s Karmic journey rather than his friend or his mother or his brothers

Maternal debt comes from the act of giving birth to a child and it is said it is the most difficult debt to pay off

Arjuna's retreat from the Bhargava weapon and Karna from the Critical Edition. Vyasa clearly says that Krishna wanted Karna to be exhausted since he cannot be stopped now, Arjuna was a little frightened.

"..At this, Kunti's son, Dhananjaya, spoke to Vasudeva. Behold the extremely terrible bhargava weapon. O Krishna! O mighty-armed one! Behold the valour of the bhargava weapon. There is no means of countering that weapon in a battle. O Krishna! Behold the angry son of a suta in the great battle. The brave one is like Yama and has performed a terrible deed. He is repeatedly casting extremely terrible glances towards me. I do not see any means of running away from Karna in this battle. If a man remains alive in a battle, there may be victory, or there may be defeat. O Hrishikesha! For the sake of victory, how can one be victorious if one is dead?' O venerable one! Janardana wished to leave to see Yudhishthira and thought that Karna would be overcome with exhaustion in the battle.."

Khushi no prob..we had discussion recently. Yes he was named Karna frm before and cos of ear thing...he got name since birth.
Karna in other language too means ear.
Sun god blessed her with a child...he ws born thru ear. He arranged that way..
Its sad..kunti treats madri's son so much as her own..but not her own son..first one.
