actually karna was able to invoke Brahamastra

what had happened was that after krishna ji reminded karna of his mistakes karan is some how able to invoke brahamastra and arjuna also invokes something to fight it off

Battle continues between them then karna shoots a powerful arrow that faints arjuna and arjuna drops his gandiv

while arjuna has lost his senses karna takes up that opportunity to take out the chariot wheel

once arjuna regains his senses krishna ji tells arjuna to kill karan quickly before he ascends on his chariot that is when arjuna fires his anjalika weapon when karna is taking out his chariot wheel

so yes karan was not only weaponless but also taking out the chariot wheel while he was killed

and unlike in other situations it wasn't like he had lost his weapons or had been divested of it in a battle

so if they show it like this there is no distortion
