I would like to elaborate on Bhima vs Karna on Day 14th.
1st battle. "..Then those two warriors, viz., Karna, and Bhima, each struck the other with straight shafts. The son of Radha, however, shot shafts mildly, but the son of Pandu shot his with great force.'.."- As mentioned above, Karna was shooting arrows mildly.
- Bhima and Karna's 1st battle ended with Bhima breaking Karna's chariot
"..Those winged shafts, piercing through Karna's body, entered the earth, like the rays of the sun piercing through the clouds. Afflicted with arrows and his bow cut off, Karna, though proud of his manliness, felt great pain and proceeded to another car.."(*) My opinion - I think breaking one's chariot and breaking his bow does not equate defeat, as written above - Karna proceeded to another car, he did not ran away.
- Karna soon got a new chariot and proceeded against Bhima again. Hence it cannot be termed as a defeat.
"..Sanjaya said, 'Mounting upon another car that was duly equipped Karna once more proceeded against the son of Pandu, with the fury of the Ocean tossed by the tempest.."2nd battle- Bhima and Karna's second battle ended with this, I dont know why Krishna and Arjuna thought that Karna is too heavy for Bhima, maybe Karna had an upperhand?
"..Meanwhile, Krishna and Dhananjaya, those chastisers of foes, engaged in battle with the Suta's son, thought the burthen too great for Bhima to bear. As Karna and Bhima for baffling each other's shafts, shot these arrows at each other, many elephants and steeds and men deeply struck therewith, fell down deprived of life.."3rd battle.- 3rd battle of Karna and Bhima ended with Karna's car getting destroyed but he did not avoid Bhima even after he was carless.
"..Then Karna, weeping in grief, circumambulated that son of thine, who, adorned with ornaments, lay on the earth, writhing like a snake. Bhima then, having made that deadly foe of his, viz., Karna, carless, smiling by covered him with shafts and made him look like a Sataghni with numberless spikes on it. The Atiratha Karna, however, that chastiser of foes, though thus pierced with arrows, did not yet avoid the enraged Bhima in battle.'.."4th Battle- Karna got injured and beaten by Bhima, Karna fled from the area.
"..Then, O king, Karna thus afflicted by Bhima's might, became exceedingly distressed. And that illustrious warrior then fled, forsaking the battle, borne away by his fleet steeds. The Atiratha Bhimasena, however, drawing his bow adorned with gold, stayed in battle, looking resplendent like a blazing fire'.."4th battle.
- It was a long battle, Karna broke Bhima's quivers and his bow and along with he destroyed Bhima's chariot, Karna broke everyone of Bhima's weapons and his supplies, Bhima tried to run but Karna pursued him. Bhima tried to hide in elephants but Karna found him, Bhima was unarmed and it is written that he could slay the Karna who was heavily armed, Bhima spared him (*), Karna then shot many arrows at Bhima and Bhima lost consciousness, Karna spared Bhima.
After sparing Bhima, Karna got attacked by Arjuna, Karna
"..The son of Kunti, however, whose stock of weapons was exhausted, was (obliged to turn back) pursued by Karna. Beholding the elephants, huge as hills that had been slain by Arjuna, lying (near), unarmed Bhimasena entered into their midst, for impeding the progress of Karna's car..""..Approaching that multitude of elephants and getting into the midst of that fastness which was inaccessible to a car, the son of Pandu, desirous of saving his life, refrained from striking the son of Radha..""..Bhima also, raising his fierce fists that were endued with the force of the thunder, desired to slay the Suta's son. Soon, however, he recollected Arjuna's vow. The son of Pandu, therefore, though competent, spared the life of Karna, from desire of not falsifying the vow that Savyasachin had made..""..The Suta'sson, however, with his sharp shafts, repeatedly caused the distressed Bhima, to lose the sense. But Karna, recollecting the words of Kunti, took not the life of the unarmed Bhima..""..With those arrows shot from Gandiva which entered Karna's body like so many snakes, Dhananjaya drove the Suta's son from Bhimasena's vicinity.."These are only the end results, I was not interested in who fired how many shafts. One should make his own opinion on who won and who lost.
(*) : Bhima was weaponless at that time and Karna was armed heavily, Karna was not at an dis-advantage at that point of time, it was Bhima who was at dis-advantage.
