Draupadi: An extremely beautiful and strong willed heroine, whom Arjuna wins over at a Swayamvara. Though she is wife to all the five Pandavas, her first passion has always been Arjuna. We see this trait of her character through Bhima's observations - whenever her eyes light up at the very mention of his name, one such scene being that of her first night with Bhima (The day when his turn, the Second Turn, begins).

Bhima looks on, ready for the first night of his turn, very modest decorations done at his abode, after Draupadi's year-long honeymoon with Yudhishtira, the eldest of the Pandavas, has come to an end. That night, the Pandavas and Draupadi sit around the bonfire, as she listens wide-eyed to Arjuna, who incidentally has come home that evening after a brief hiatus. Later, at night, when Bhima moves close to her in bed, lust rippling through his veins, she dreamily mutters Arjuna's name, lying sleepily by his side. Bhima, then gets up, goes out and makes his bed on bare ground and lies down, staring up at the star-lit sky. He would have none of her cold body tonight, Bhima decides, when her mind dreams about Arjuna, even while she is beside him in bed.

On yet another occasion, she mentions her desire to wear the Sougandhika flowers, famous for their heavenly perfume, in her hair. Though Bhima gets the flowers from a heavily guarded pond after a minor adventure, he gets caught and is kept captive by King Kubera. It's only after the arrival of his brothers and Draupadi that Bhima is released. Though it is an occasion to be embarrassed, Bhima proudly hands out the flowers to Draupadi, but she tosses it away disdainfully and later, when they walk past, the Sougandhika flowers lie, soiled and crumpled on the ground (This is purely the author's innovation), a beautiful symbol of rejected love.

Draupadi always looks up to Bhima as a protector and someone who would grant even her extreme desires. Bhima realizes after a rare romantic rendezvous with Draupadi, when she pleads him to go instead of Arjuna to fight King Jarasandha, a formidable opponent, in a wrestling bout, that the lure of romance was just a bait. To her, Bhima is always the man who loves her unconditionally, someone who could be emotionally swayed with the slightest gesture of love.

Her pledge to let her hair loose, till it becomes wet with Dusshasana's blood is yet another indication of her trust in Bhima. It is a trust which borders on the attitude towards a devoted servant. Bhima, during the war, tears open Dusshasana's chest, in an action unbecoming of a Khshatriya and returns to smear Draupadi's hair with his blood. Could there be any more that a lover could do? Could there be a sweeter revenge? Yes, it had to be Bhima, when it came to satisfying Draupadi's most unreasonable whims.

The whole relation is captured in a nutshell, in the final scene, during Swargarohana, when the Pandavas ascend the path to heaven. They walk, in the order of seniority, with Draupadi behind them. Then Bhima hears a rustle of clothes, a sigh and a faint thud behind. Draupadi has fallen by the wayside.

Then Yudhishtira says, "She has sinned, she has loved Arjuna the most amongst us, instead of seeing all her five husbands with the same eye. That's why she has fallen. Do not turn back, do not fret, and keep walking. Erasing worldly memories is a prerequisite for attaining heaven." All of the brothers obey him, not turning back to look at their beloved wife.

Now comes the author's classic intervention, a detour from the original storyline, raising Bhima's love to a feeling bordering on ultimate, selfless submission. Ultimate submission, they say, is the highest degree of love; which is why; in poems and songs the woman whom one loves is often compared to a Goddess.

Bhima stops, ignores his brother's wise words, turns back, walks up to Draupadi, bends down next to her and cups her face in his palms. She looks up at him, smiles, turns her head away and breathes her last. Peacefully. In Bhima's arms.

Draupadi

Her mind stopped a moment.. .what does it mean to have loved? Ulupi, Chitrangada, Subhadra " Arjuna had loved so many women!.. Or had he? Had Arjuna given his heart to any woman? Women had loved him but he had given his heart to Krishna. She knew how from the beginning, from the settling of Indraprastha, Arjuna and Krishna would sit talking by the hour. In their talk there was always some new idea " perhaps about building a city; but they talked as friends, each one speaking from his heart and listening to the other. No woman could win Arjuna's heart. .. Is love always like that? Is it always one-sided? I pine for someone who doesn't return my love; someone else yearns for me... Suddenly, as if shocked, she stopped. The realization pierced like lightning; there was one who had given his whole life for her. She sighed with her new understanding. Again pictures came before her eyes; Bhima along with Arjuna, fighting the enemies outside the svayamvara pavilion; Bhima ready to burn his brother's dice-playing hands when she was dragged into the assembly; Bhima, so angry he had to be held down by Arjuna; Bhima, comforting her when she was tired; Bhima, bringing her fragrant lotuses; Bhima, drinking the blood of Duhsha-sana; Bhima, plaiting her hair with gory hands. Arjuna could have killed the Kichaka, but it was Bhima who did. How many things she remembered " greedy Bhima, rough, tempestuous Bhima, always railing at Dhritarashtra and Gandhari. In the same sense that Draupadi was earthy, so was he. She was a daughter of the earth, he was a son. Draupadi heard a dragging sound, then a great sigh. Her whole body quivered with fear. She had been waiting quietly for the moment of her death. Was a wild animal coming? A hyena? In all the days of walking on the plateau they had seen no animals. Better that it fastened on her throat at once, without mauling her. She closed her eyes hard. As she lay waiting for the unnamed danger to strike, suddenly a shadow fell over her eyes. A curtain had dropped between her and the sun. A low deep voice called, "Draupadi." It was Bhima's voice. It was he who had dragged himself, gasping with effort, over the ten, fifteen feet that separated them. On the way he had seen Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva lying dead, and had thought Draupadi must be dead too. When Draupadi, frightened at his approach, had quiversed, he had caught with joy this sign of life. "What can I do for you?" The words came out with difficulty. It was the same question he had asked all his life, but in this situation it was utterly meaningless and incongruous. Draupadi smiled. Bringing Bhima's face close to hers, she said with her last breath, "In our next birth be the eldest, Bhima; under your shelter we can all live in safety and joy."

A LOVE STORY IN LIFE

IT IS A VERY KNOWN STORY BUT THERE IS A LOVE STORY INSIDE,WHICH IS LITTLE UNKNOWN.THIS IS THE STORY OF A MAN WHO LOVED A WOMAN MADLY,THOUGH THE WOMAN LOVED ANOTHER MAN BLINDLY.IT'S A TRUE LOVE TRIANGLE.

THIS IS THE STORY OF DRAUPADI,ARJUN AND BHIM.DRAUPADI LOVED ARJUN.IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT.BHIM LOVED DRAUPADI,IT WAS ALSO ALOVE AT FIRST SIGHT.ARJUN WAS A PLAYBOY-VERY HANDSOME,SMART,A VERY GOOD WARRIOR,A GOOD TALKER.GIRLS USEDTO FALL FOR HIM LIKE AS IF HE IS A MAGNET.EVEN MOST FAMOUS DANCER OF HEAVEN-URVASHI HAD FALLEN FOR HIM.

BHIM WAS NOT THAT GOOD LOOKING.HE WAS HAVING A HEAVY BODY ,MORE LIKE A PEHLWAN.HE WAS ROUGH AND TOUGH.HOT TEMPERED.HE WAS NOT A GOOD TALKER.HE WAS ALSO A GOOD WARRIOR,BUT THOSE DAYS THE MAN WHO CAN FIGHT WITH BOWS AND ARROWS WAS GENERALLY REVERED.

WHEN DRAUPADI HAD TO MARRY ALL THE FIVE BROTHERS,SINCE THEN IT WAS BHIM WHO USED TO GUARD HER MOST.HE WAS ALWAYS AT HER BECK AND CALL ,WHERE AS ARJUN WAS FLIRTING WITH OTHER GIRLS LIKE SHUBHADRA,CHITRANGADA ETC.ETC.

IT WAS BHIM WHO WAS ABOUT TO THRASH DURYODHAN,WHEN HE REMARKED ABUSIVELY TO DRAUPADI,DURING GAMBLING.ARJUN WAS SILENT.WHEN DURYODHAN SHOWED HIS NAKED THIGH TO DRAUPADI,IN FRONT OF ALL INCLUDING ELDERS,ARJUN STILL REMAINED SILENT BUT BHIM SHOUTED AND VOWED THAT HE WILL BREAK THAT THIGH ONE DAY.HE ULTIMATELY DID WHILE KILLING DURYODHAN IN KURUKSHETRA WAR.WHEN ,DUSHWASHAN ABUSED DRAUPADI OPENLY AND PULLED HER BY HER HAIR,IT WAS AGAIN BHIM WHO VOWED TO KILL HIM BY PIERCING HIS CHEST AND TO DRINK HIS BLOOD.WHEN DRAUPADI TOOK A VOW -NOT TO TIE HER HAIR UNLESS SHE HAVE A BATH WITH DUSHWASHAN'S BLOOD,IT WAS BHIM ,WHO PROMISED HER TO BRING THAT BLOOD TO HER.HE DID SO.IN THE BATTLE FIELD HE KILLED DUSHWASHAN AND DRANK HIS BLOOD AND BROUGHT THAT BLOOD FOR DRAUPADI AND SHE HAD HER BATH.ARJUN WAS A MERE SPECTETOR.

WHEN THEY WERE IN DISGIUSE IN BIRATNAGAR,THE BROTHER IN LAW OF THE KING WAS SEXUALLY HARASSING DRAUPADI AS SHE WAS WORKING AS A MAID IN KING'S PALACE.WHEN DRAUPADI COMPLAINED,IT WAS BHIM WHO KILLED THE MAN,WHEN HE WAS ABOUT TO RAPE DRAUPADI.HE ALSO BASHED JAYODROTH,SON IN LAW OF DHRITRASTRA,AS HE HAD TARGETED TO KIDNAP DRAUPADI IN THE FOREST,DURING THEIR FOREST DAYS.

SUCH SMALL SMALL INCIDENTS ARE NUMEROUS.BHIM KNEW THAT DRAUPADI ONLY LOVES ARJUN,YET HE COULD NOT STOP LOVING HER.IT WAS AN ONE SIDED LOVE.

AT THE END,WHILE CLIMBING SWARGAROHINI PEAK,THEY WERE DYING ONE BY ONE.DRAUPADI WAS WEAK AND HAD FALLEN ON SNOW,SHE WAS CRYING FOR ARJUN.ARJUN WAS EAGER TO REACH HEAVEN AND DID NOT HEAR OR LOOK BACK AT HER.BHIM HEARD THE CRY AND CAME BACK AS HE WAS A LITTLE AHEAD.HE TRIED TO CARRY HER,BUT ULTIMATELY FAINTED WHILE DOING SO.BOTH OF THEM DIED,BHIM WAS HOLDING HIS BELOVED'S HAND TILL LAST BREATH.

A MAN,A LOVER,A SIMPLE HEARTED BUT CRAZY FELLOW ,WHOSE LOVE STORY NOBODY REMEMBERS,WAS ONE OF THE GREAT LOVERS IN THIS WORLD-EQUIVALENT TO ROMEO,MAJNU,FARHAD AND MAHIWAL.YOU CAN KEEPASIDE A FEW DROPS OF TEAR FOR HIM.
