Clear as it is that this Krishna leela track is coming out of nowhere to accommodate IPL and unfortunate as it is that it had to start with them distorting Draupadi's character, I'm not gonna lie - I'm loving it so far. As I mentioned before, I've been drawn to VasuDevaki since as long as I can remember, long before I even understood what their struggle was all about and what all can be learned from them. I used to get bummed that they get so little representation in devotional songs and paintings, and it especially pisses me off when their love for Krishna and the extent of what they went through for him is undermined by kathakars and in pop culture. One of my very first posts on IF when I joined almost 6 years ago was a passionate, looonggg ass rant in the JSK forum because they had SRJ (who I adored as Vishnu even then) deliver a line insinuating that VD weren't his "real parents" and their love for him was somehow less than perfect. That they perpetuated that misconception was bad enough, but having it come from God's mouth was just too appalling for me to handle, and sadly it was only their first step in butchering those characters. In contrast, MB gave me a scene with the same endearing SRJ singing the praises of those characters and convincing a sabha full of other favorites to see them as an inspiration just like I do - of course I'm going to find that satisfying and it's going to strike a chord 😆 Also, how much ever of an afterthought this track seems to be, they covered the origin of my favorite Hindu festival with more effort (technical, casting, and writing alike) and invoked more devotional fervor than either of the other two 21st century attempts managed to in spite of it being a bigger focus in those shows. The music (and the silence when needed), the visuals, SRJ's dialogues, came together for a very memorable, magical Janmashtami scene that I will probably rewatch again and again.
