meaning starbharat was right? his oath had nothing to do with serving lifelong to the throne of hastinapur? strange! may b that's why to explain him siding with kaurava they made him give a fictional promise to dhrit.

In Starbharat also he vowed to be a servant of Hastinapur.. then they forgot.. or they wanted to change it.. so he made a new fresh promise..

In Starbharat, he staged a coup so as to prevent the Pandavas from being thrown into the dungeons. And then he seemed a bit too pro-Pandava. So, Dhrit did the emotional atyaachar, and then came the new promise.

Bheeshma is a fabulous character! Love him! But again it may be wise to think before commitment to a vow ...the web that entangled him to Hastinpur and its King.
