Retirements
Shantanu - In the single episode that he appeared, Shantanu was first shown on a boat date w/ Satyavati, who successfully navigated the waters and caught a huge fish. After Satyavati demanded that her son be made yuvraj instead of Devarath, Shantanu balked, but Devarath intervened and made his famous vow. Following that, Shantanu granted Bheeshma the boon that he'd only die when he was willing

Satyavati - following Shantanu's death after the above incidents, she initially would order Bheeshma. She spoiled her son Vichitravirya, and ordered Bheeshma to abduct the 3 princesses of Kashi for Vichitravirya. That caused an altercation b/w her and Princess Amba as well.

After Vichitravirya's death, she forced his widows Ambika & Ambalika to beget children through Vyasa. The 3 sons born to them & a maid were Dhritarashtra, Pandu & Vidura. She decided to support an arrangement where Dhritarashtra would be king, Pandu the commander of the army, and Vidura prime minister. However, Vidura intervened and caused Pandu to become king instead. Satyavati also had altercations w/ her bahus - first Ambika & Ambalika over niyoga, and later, Gandhari over her blindfolding herself for life.

After Pandu abdicated, Satyavati initially supported Dhritarashtra, but when it became clear that he was biased towards his sons, Satyavati decided to go w/ Vidura and get Pandu reinstated. But by then, Pandu had died as a result of consummating Madri, and so Satyavati handed over the well being of the Pandavas to Vidura, and asked him to ensure that Yudisthir became the future king. She then retired into exile.

Vichitravirya - He first appeared after a leap, in which he was a prisoner of Prishatha, the ruler of Panchala. After Prishatha listed his crimes, Vichitravirya spat on his face. Prishatha then resolved to execute him, but Bheeshma came in time & salvaged him. However, later, when Bheeshma tried to train him, he was too drunk to fight effectively, and Satyavati scolded Bheeshma for being too harsh.

After Bheeshma got Ambika & Ambalika to Hastinapur, Vichitravirya married them. However, while ascending the steps of his throne, he collapsed & died, throwing Hastinapur into yet another crisis.

Ambika - She was first shown, along w/ her sisters Amba & Ambalika at the Kashi swayamvara. When Bheeshma barged into the swayamvara, Amba protested @ his intrusion and his wounding Shalva. However, when Ambika & Ambalika were asked whether they had any suitors in mind, they partly out of fear, and partly out of hope @ becoming queens of Hastinapur, agreed to accompany him. They married Vichitravirya, but were soon widowed.

Ambika later gave birth to Dhritarashtra, and admired his performance in the arena. When Gandhari married Dhritarashtra, Ambika was concerned that Gandhari blindfolded herself out of protest. Later, when after a long delay, Gandhari failed to produce a live baby, Ambika abused her for her failure.

Ambika was last shown alongside Ambalika when Kunti returned w/ the Pandavas to Hastinapur.

Subala/Sudarma - They first appeared after a leap following Amba's death. Bheeshma arrived @ Gandhara hearing about the boon Princess Gandhari had received from Shiva about getting 100 sons. Bheeshma arrived there and asked for Gandhari's hand. Subala & Sudarma thought it was for Pandu, and were enthusiastic, but Bheeshma told them that it was for Dhritarashtra, disappointing them and enraging Shakuni.

After the marriage, the couple, along w/ Shakuni, stayed on for Dhritarashtra's coronation. When that was scuttled by Vidura, they decided to leave Hastinapur. Shakuni refused to join them.

While Subala or Sudarma were never shown again, Bheeshma referred to him after Shakuni's attempt w/ Duryodhan to poison Bhima. Bheeshma told Shakuni that he had proposed to Subala to retire to the forest so that Shakuni could become king, and stop inciting turmoil in Hastinapur. When Shakuni returned to Hastinapur for the tournament, Bheeshma condoled him on Subala's death, and Shakuni showed him some dice that he had made out of Subala's bones 🤢

King Shantanu of Hastinapur is in love with a Fisherwoman Satyavati. Later his first wife Ganga hands over their son Devavrata whom she took away with her 25 years ago. Shantanu crowns Devavrata as his successor upon which Satyavati gets upset as her sons from Shantanu cannot be Kings in future and refuses to marry Shantanu. Devavrata who learns this meets Satyavati and vows that he will let go his status of crown prince and also that he will remain celibate throughout his life so that his future generation does not claim the throne. Shantanu in favor of Devavrata's sacrifice give him the boon of Ichcha Mrityu and also gives him the title Bhishma'.

25 years later, Vichitravirya the son of Shantanu and Satyavati, is captured by King of Pancha for trespassing. Bhishma rescues him fighting the Panchal troops and earns a curse that someone who is born in Panchal will be the reason for his death. Bhishma is harsh with Vichi while training warfare. Satyavati (now a widowed Rajmata) is unhappy about this.

King of Kasi arranges a Swayamvar for his three daughters Amba, Ambika and Ambalika. Bhishma as ordered by Satyavati reaches the Swayamvar and abducts Ambika and Ambalika. He leaves Amba there as she is in love with King Salva, one among the contenders. Salva rejects Amba and suggests that she should approach Bhishma for marriage. Bhishma too rejects her and asks her to seek help from Parasuram, his Guru for justice. Parasuram also rejects her saying his student cannot do injustice.

Vichitravirya is about to be crowned as King, but unfortunately dies during the ceremony. Satyavati's maiden son Ved-Vyas is appointed to complete Niyoga on his brother's wives. Ambika, Ambalika and their servant maid give birth to Dhridrashtra (Blind), Pandu and Vidura respectively.

Amba convinces Parasuram who calls for Bhishma to fight. The fight is balanced and powerful. Lord Shiva appears to stop the fight and gives a boon to Amba that she can be the cause of Bhishma's death if it is for a good cause. Amba decides to finish her life and revenge Bhishma in her next birth.

25 years later, Amba is reborn as Sikhandini to Drupad the King of Panchal. The Princes of Hastinapur have grown into strong and wise men. Dhrid speaks harsh to Pandu and Vidura as he thinks that they both remind him of his disability often. Bhishma seeks the hand of Gandhari, princess of Gandhar for Dhrid. Gandhar King Subala hesitates as Dhrid is blind but finally agrees due to fear of Bhishma. Gandhari and her brother Shakuni are unhappy. Shakuni urges to stop the marriage but Gandhari decides to marry Dhrid. Gandhari blindfolds herself to accompany her husband in darkness. Hastinapur disagrees but Gandhari manages to convince them and she is married to Dhrid. Dhrid is unhappy and disowns her.

Vidura and Pandu are appointed as Chief Minister and Commander of army respectively. Vidura stops Dhrid's coronation as King quoting his disability. Dhrid is annoyed and no one could convince him. He drains his anger on Gandhari. Half hearted Pandu agrees to be crowned as King. Raged Shakuni refuses to go back to Gandhar until Gandhari becomes the empress of Hastinapur. To remind his vow he pierces his thigh with his knife and makes a non-healable wound. Shakuni begins to poison Dhrid's mind against Pandu and also reminds him about Gandhari's boon from Lord Shiva to get 100 sons. Dhrid grows hope that his son can become King in future.

Pandu wins Kunti in her swayamvar. Pandu also marries Madra Princess Madri. Dhrid reconciles with Gandhari with hopes of making their son the Future King of Hastinapur. Later, Hastinapur celebrates the news of Gandhari's pregnancy when Pandu who killed Rishi Kindama accidentally in his hunting tour decides to quit the throne and to become a vanavasi. Bhishma tries hard to convince Pandu but in vain. Dhrid is also unhappy about Pandu's decision but Shakuni is happy. Dhrid is made the provisional King.

Gandhari does not deliver the child inspite of 15 months of pregnancy. Dhrid is upset with the news of the birth of Pandu's first son and calls Gandhari's maid to his Chamber. Distressed on Dhird's action, Gandhari beats her womb hard to deliver a lump of flesh. Everyone is upset when Satyavati identifies that Ved Vyas can give a solution. Vyas cuts the lump of flesh into 101 pieces and puts them into individual pots along with other required materials. He confirms that 100 sons and 1 daughter will be born from the pots soon.

After some days, the first child is born when bad omens start showing off everywhere. Vidura and Kripa suggest abandonment of the child who will be the reason for destruction of mankind. Bhishma says that the father of the child will be the one to decide. Dhrid decides not to abandon the child and names him Duryodhan. Later 99 sons are born from the rest of the pots while Gandhari awaits birth of her daughter. Gandhari's maid Sukhda is pregnant now.

15 years later, Dhridrashtra's sons are found to be involved in misdeeds with the fishermen of Hastinapur. Shakuni superficially wounds Duryodhan and reports to Dhrid that the fisherman have wounded Dury badly. Dhrid out of his blind love evacuates the fisherman clan from Hastinapur. While they leave, a fisherman reminds Satyavati about how good Pandu was.

Satyavati questions Ganga about why she did not stop Bhishma when he was about to take his vow. They have and argument when Ganga blames Satyavati to be the reason for all calamities to which Satyavati finally agrees and plans to correct it. She decides to bring back Pandu to the throne. Shakuni knowing this plan informs the same to Dhrid and Gandhari. He says only their children will be called Kauravas not the children of Pandu. Satyavati reaches the forest of Pandu only to find him dead due to Kindama's curse. Madri commits suicide. Satyavati asks Vidura to take Kunti and the 5 sons of Pandu to Hastinapur while she leaves to Ved Vyas's hermitage.

Shakuni and Dhrid plan to use Vidura's and Satyavati's absence to crown Dury as prince. Bhishma knowing this confronts with Shakuni and threatens to kill him if he does not convince Dhrid to revert the plan. Shakuni obeys. Pandavas along with Kunti arrive. Kaurava kids are not happy with this. Bhishma tells that Yudishtar being the eldest among all is the rightful one to be respected by the others. Dury is unhappy and has an argument with his parents and uncle. Gandhari says that he will be King only when he develops to be worthy of it. Dhrid disregards her words to say that his son will be King. Kunti is welcomed into the palace and Dushala greets her.

Dhrid, Shakuni, Vidura and Bhishma have a discussion and decide that the princes need to be educated under a guru. The Kaurava kids try to bully the Pandavas and Bhima teaches them a lesson. Duryodhan agrees with Shakuni that Bhima is their threat. The Kids play in the Garden. Dushala throws the ball that hit her doll into a well. Dronacharya gets the ball out using dry grasses. Arjuna runs to the court with the ball to inform Bhishma about Drona. Dury isolates Bhima from his brothers to an island, poisons him and pushes him down the river.

Bhishma and Vidura meet Drona and request him to be the Guru of the princes. Drona demands that the princes have to be outside their luxuries. Dhrid refuses and Drona leaves. Later Bhima who was considered dead is saved by a Naga King. He returns and informs what Dury did. Bhishma uses this act of Dury and convinces Dhrid to accept Drona's demands. Bhishma sends Shakuni back to Gandhar as King Subala has planned to retire to the forest. The kids leave to Drona's school.

Dury and Dushi meet Ashwathama the son of Drona and befriend him. Drona promises Ashwi that he will be made King of Panchal and that he will not need the help of his friends for that. Ekalavya, a tribal prince comes into the picture who claims that Drona is his Guru too. He had practiced archery with Drona's statue as his Guru. Dury, Dushi and Ashwi try to befriend Ekalavya but Drona comes and seeks Ekalavya's right hand thumb as his fees and also asks him to leave to Magadha. Ekalavya leaves. Drona is unhappy for doing such a sinful act. He explains to Arjuna that he had to do it as Magadha was the rival nation of Hastinapur.

After 12 years, Ashwi meets Shakuni in a place nearby Hastinapur. Shakuni's father is now dead and he made a new pair of dice from his father's bone which will obey him same as his father. Shakuni promises to make Dury the King of Hastinapur. Shakuni moves to Hastinapur and meets Dhrid, Gandhari, Bhishma and Vidura. Drona too arrives and all decide that a competition will be held to present the skills of the Princes.

In the Arena all the elders are present. Dushala also joins them. The competition begins and Ashwi aims at the rotating wheel engraved with the names of the Princes and hits the names of the princes one by one, first being Dury. Dury defeats Nakula and Sahadeva in fair fight. Next is Bhima who makes Dury bleed and is disqualified. Yudi backs off from the fight as Dury had enraged him by talking fowl of Kunti. Dury defeats Yudi from behind. Finally Arjuna manages to trap Dury in ice bergs and is announced the winner. Drona also announces that he is the Best Archer of the world. When Arjuna is about to release Dury, Karna releases Dury and also argues with Drona that he cannot announce Arjuna to be the best of Archers before Arjuna can defeat him. He is rejected by Kripa as Karna is not a Kshatriya but a Suta-putra. Karna is dejected and leaves. Dury stops him and crowns him the King of Anga and befriends him. Karna-Arjuna compete and the show ends without result due to sunset.

Kauravas meet their father and seek blessings. Dury is interested in another combat but is put down by the elders. Dury makes a statue of him as he assumes that he will be the future King. Later Bhima breaks this statue and Dury is angered. Ashwi is happy that Dury will be crowned as Yuvraj. Drona is not happy and leaves to the court. In the court Bhishma tries to convince Dhrid that Pandu had immense faith in him and Dhrid should not do anything that would harm that. When Dhrid is about to announce the crown prince, Drona arrives and demands his Guru Dakshina of conquering Drupad his childhood friend who turned him down on status basis. The princes leave to Panchal and Dury says that the Pandavas and Kauravas will not war together. Kauravas fail in accomplishing the task while the Pandavas succeed.

Dury threatens Dhrid that he will crush the honor of Hastinapur if Yudi is made the Yuvraj. Dury compels Karna to leave dharma which always hinders his path to the throne. Karna hesitates but finally agrees. Dhrid tries to manipulate Yudi to forsake his right to the throne but Arjuna reminds him his dharma. Dhrid confirms that Yudi will be the crown prince. Yudi is crowned as the Yuvraj of Hastinapur. Dury pretends to accept Yudi as the crown prince. Karna and Shakuni are upset.

Gandhari understands Dury and tries to console him. Dury says that he will do anything for the throne. Bhishma meets Ganga and tells her that he wishes to leave this world as now Hastinapur is in the hands of dharma. Ganga tells him that the time has not come.

Dury announces in the court that he will get Dushala married to Jayadradha, King of Sindu. There is commotion in the court as Sindu is a rival of Hastinapur. Dury and Shakuni speak some harsh words to Yudi and Bhishma so that Yudi gets uncomfortable in staying with them. Yudi meets Bhishma in private and wishes to give away the throne to Dury. Bhishma refuses on account of Yudi's dharma as a crown prince.

Purochan the architect convinces Kunti and Yudi to leave to Varanavrat a nearby city. Vidura tries to stop Yudi but Yudi is firm. Dury Dushi and Shakuni discuss their plan to burn the Pandavas and Kunti alive. Karna is shocked to know this. He opposed the plan but Dury is adamant. Pandavas leave to Varanavrat. Vidur watches Karna being upset and send a spy behind him. Karna meets his foster parents and shows his distress. Adiratha suggests Karna to do charity and pray for peace for himself and his friend. Karna's words reach Vidur who understands that the Pandavas life is in danger. Dhird calls for Dury to check what his plans are and tries to stop him. Dury is in no mood to change. Vidura sends a clue to Varanavrat which the Pandavas failed to understand. Adiratha also meets Bhishma and informs that Pandavas lives seem to be in danger. Bhishma leaves to Varanavrat. Dury, Dushi and Shakuni discuss and change the plan to kill the Pandavas immediately instead of the planned new moon day. Shakuni send the message through his messenger bird, Shukra.

Purochan ignites the palace from outside but Pandavas escape underground. Bhishma reaches there just after the Pandavas escape and puts off the fire with his Varunastra. He collects the weapons of Pandavas and reaches Hastinapur upset and crying. Citizens of Hastinapur mourn the death of their Princes and Queen. Dury, Dushi and Shakuni are very excited on the news of the death of Pandavas. Karna is unhappy. Bhishma drops the weapons in Ganges and is very dejected as Hastinapur's future is now a question. Vidura tries to console Bhishma.

Bibliography
The Mahabharata endures as the great epic of India. But while Jaya is the story of the Pandavas, told from the perspective of the victors of Kurukshetra; Ajaya is the narrative of the 'unconquerable' Kauravas, who were decimated to the last man.

At the heart of India's most powerful empire, a revolution is brewing. Bhishma, the noble patriarch of Hastinapura, is struggling to maintain the unity of his empire. On the throne sits Dhritarashtra, the blind King and his foreign born Queen Gandhari. In the shadow of the throne stands Kunti, the Dowager-Queen, burning with ambition to see her firstborn become the ruler, acknowledged by all. And in the wings:

  • Parashurama, the enigmatic Guru of the powerful Southern Confederate, bides his time to take over and impose his will from mountains to ocean.
  • Ekalavya, a young Nishada, yearns to break free of caste restrictions and become a warrior.
  • Karna, son of a humble charioteer, travels to the South to study under the foremost Guru of the day and become the greatest archer in the land.
  • Balarama, the charismatic leader of the Yadavas, dreams of building the perfect city by the sea and seeing his people prosperous and proud once more.
  • Takshaka, guerilla leader of the Nagas, foments a revolution by the downtrodden as he lies in wait in the jungles of India, where survival is the only dharma.
  • Jara, the beggar and his blind dog Dharma, walk the dusty streets of India, witness to people and events far greater than they, as the Pandavas and the Kauravas confront their searing destinies.

Amidst the chaos, Prince Suyodhana, heir of Hastinapura, stands tall, determined to claim his birthright and act according to his conscience. He is the maker of his own destiny or so he believes. While in the corridors of the Hastinapura palace, a foreign Prince plots to destroy India. And the dice falls.

Aryavarta the ancient realm of the noble.

For generations, the Firstborn dynasty of scholar-sages, descendants of Vasishta Varuni and protectors of the Divine Order on earth, has dominated here. For just as long, the Angirasa family of Firewrights, weapon-makers to the kings and master inventors, has defied them. In the aftermath of the centuries-long conflict between the two orders, the once-united empire of Aryavarta lies splintered, a shadow of its former glorious self.

Now, the last Secret Keeper of the Firewrights is dead, killed by a violent hand, and the battle for supreme power in the empire is about to begin.

As mighty powers hurtle towards a bloody conflict, Govinda Shauri, cowherd-turned-prince and now Commander of the armies of Dwaraka, must use all his cunning to counter deception and treachery if he is to protect his people and those whom he loves.

But who holds the key to the fantastic and startling knowledge of the Firewrights, which in the wrong hands will bring doom upon the empire? And does Govinda have it in him to confront the dark secrets of his past and discover the true meaning of being Arya, of being noble?

About the Author

Govinda is Krishnas first published novel. She is currently working on the second and third books of The Aryavarta Chronicles and a collection of prose-poems entitled Objects of Affection. A resident of sunny Singapore, when shes not busy writing and teaching, Krishna loves to watch Rajinikanth movies first-day, first-show, complete with applause and whistles, and to go on long drives with her husband, Jai, and two Siberian Huskies, Boozo and Zana.

Nothing left to fight for is nothing left to lose.

Emperor Dharma Yudhisthir of the Kauravas and Empress Panchali Draupadi rule over the unified realm of Aryavarta, an empire built for them by Govinda Shauri with the blessings of the Firstborn and by the might of those whom everyone believes long gone the Firewrights.

Now the Firewrights rise from the ashes of the past, divided as before in purpose and allegiance, and no one, it seems, can stand in the way of the chaos about to be unleashed on the land not the Firstborn, not the kings of Aryavarta, and not Govinda Shauri.

As sinister plans are put in play and treacherous alliances emerge, Aryavarta transforms into its own worst enemy. Dharma Yudhisthir gambles away his empire, the tormented empress is forced into a terrifying exile and the many nations of the realm begin to take up arms in a bid to fight, conquer and destroy each other.

His every dream shattered, Govinda is left a broken man. The only way he can protect Aryavarta and the woman in whose trusted hands he had left it is by playing a dangerous game. But can he bring himself to reveal the terrible secrets that the Vyasa has protected all his life secrets that may well destroy the Firstborn, and the Firewrights with them?

In Kaurava, the second book in The Aryavarta Chronicles series, Krishna Udayasankar continues to recreate the world of the Mahabharata and the lives of its characters through stunning imagination and powerful storytelling. This is the epic like it was never told before.

The Palace Of Illusions, written by Chitra Divakaruni, is a tale of honor and humiliation, love and passion, kings and queens, featuring the epic story of the Mahabharata, but from a female perspective.

Summary Of The Book

The Palace Of Illusions is a modern retelling of the epic Mahabharata, through the eyes of Panchaali (Draupadi), the wife of the famous Pandava brothers. Divakaruni has rewritten this epic from a female perspective. The focus of the story has shifted from the original war and honour, to more humanistic concerns. It is an epic saga, surrounding the events of Panchali's life, while growing up in a male dominated world. The Mahabharata is a narrative about the Kurukshetra war between two families, the Pandavas and the Kauravas.

Panchali is the protagonist of Divakaruni's story. She is a young girl born out of a special fire ritual that was performed by her father, King Drupada. Right from the start, she leads a lonely and unusual life, without the care of a mother. Her sole companion is her brother, Dhristadhyumna, who was also born out of fire. Panchaali is characterized as an atypical female as she is a woman who is outspoken, self confident, and defiant. She is also interested in the art of warfare and the politics of monarchy.

Her life changes when she falls in love and ends up married to all the five Pandava brothers. As a result of unfortunate circumstances, she ends up living as a servant, and watches her family suffer through a terrible turn of events. The story explores different areas of Panchaali's life, such as her husbands' fight to regain their kingdom, and her intriguing friendship with Lord Krishna. Things become more complicated when she is attracted to Karna, a fierce and noble warrior, who is also the Pandavas' enemy.

The Palace Of Illusions is a woman's struggle for survival in a man's world. This book was published in 2009 by Pan Macmillan India.

True. He could have gone either way. However, he wasn't included in the Pandava AT, and he was a part of the Kuru clan in the same way that Vichi or Shantanu was.

Also, when Dhritarashtra, Gandhari & Kunti went into exile, Vidura went w/ them, rather than stay back w/ Yudisthir.
