Women were allowed to marry men of same or higher cast but men could marry women of the same or lower cast.
It was because a womens cast changed after marriage so it was to be maintained that either she has the same cast or becomes of a higher cast after her marriage.
And technically, arjuna was the son of god indra so he was a demi god himself.
Subhadra could not marry suta or vaishya, it had to be a kahtriya or brahmin.
