I suggest all here read Jaya: an illustrated retelling fo the MB
It has within it many tales of the Mb and many retellings and much folklore
rather than me stating many points here; it is recommended that Jaya is read because it may have stories and retellings that have not been heard
Just a suggestion.

Hey everyone,

I'm posting in this thread after a very long time.
Well, we all know that this Mahabharat is full of distortions- some good while some absolutely unbearable. But I've never talked much about it. Because, honestly I loved some of the distortions. Being a die-hard Parth-Panchali fan, I LOVED their filmy meeting, extended Swamvar, their walk through the jungle n even their first fight.
Thus, when people, who didn't like these distortions, complained about these scenes, I thought, why are people grumbling so much? Why can't people take it just as an entertainment?
But, then I went to Facebook, n visited some pages related to Mahabharat. Honestly, I was shocked.
I realized, what "distortions" of an epic shown in a serial can do to the audience.
I have not read the original Mahabharat n do not claim to know everything, but we had an abridged version of it, in our syllabus at school. So, from a very young age, I knew about Mahabharat. Besides, I've done a lot of net-surfing, thus giving me the basic knowledge dat I need to participate in a forum like this. However, there r many people who haven't read any version of Mahabharat, don't know wat's really there in the original epic, but have gained their knowledge only from B.R.Chopra's serial n some fictional books, based on the fantasies of various authors. These people bash the characters of Mahabharat like anything on Facebook pages.
For example, I noticed, many people hate Draupadi to the core. Even women call her a disgrace to womanhood. The reason they hate Draupadi:-
1.) Bcoz she insulted Karna, by calling him a sutaputra n comparing him to demons as shown in the serial. Well, it is obvious to feel bad for Karna. But these people don't even know, wat Draupadi actually said in the epic.
2.)Bcoz she insulted Dhritarashtra for his blindness. From wat I know, "blind man's son is blind" was not there in the original epic. So, these people have taken the distortion in B.R.Chopra's serial as the ultimate truth.
It is alright to like/dislike a character. But some people use abusive language against Draupadi, n even her fans, calling her evil, dirty, prostitute n wat not.
Clearly this people have not understood the epic n the characters. It is alright to dislike a character, but the way some people react is really aggressive. The thought-process of these people seems so one-dimensional.
Then, there's Drupad's character. Some people have actually believed, dat Drupad was really so bad, as shown in the serial.
Then, it's Draupadi's marriage. Some people believe polyandry is adharm, bcoz Lord Krishna in the serial, has said it to be adharm. They don't know wat Lord Krishna actually said in the epic. These same people however have no "dharm" issues with men having many wives.
These people, believe in the distortions shown in the serial n argue with so much animosity.
It was only then that I realized, y so many people on this forum are complaining so much about distortions.
Although, I'm not against distortions, but I certainly was shocked to see the level of knowledge, some viewers have n the level of aggression they show to prove, that their misconception about certain characters are right.
I didn't intend to offend any fan group. I'm sorry, if anyone has got hurt.

@amritat: thanks for sharing what you came across.. I was shocked and also understood what damage distortions can make when someone had updated wikipedia Chakravyuha page with information on this serial's 'Drupad ka Chakravyuh'

Many members and I have been complaining on the effect these distortions have on people. Mahabharat is a major epic that most everyone has heard of or knows characters' names and these makers dont realise that their lies (distortions) are not only being taken as entertainment but as the truth- I see comments on google plus, facebook, twitter etc and its angers me that these people will absolutely anything they show!!

From my impression BRC Mahabharat is close to the real thing. And yes I have raised the point of if Polyandry is adharm then why isnt Polygamy?

I have posted my concerns on star plus posts, correcting people and telling them that no Drupad never asked for misfortune for Draupadi, but people are so receptive to media, but if more people point out that the makers are distorting the epic then maybe people will take it as entertainment, I urge everyone here to tweet, facebook do whatever and spread the word about these distortions, because I hate mis-education, it is not dharm!!

on twitter I have used the hashtag #DontRuinMahabharat

Actually, w/ all the epics, it's been a learning experience. When Ramayan aired, I'd check valmikiramayan.net to see what the originals said, and was surprised at some of the things I learnt.

Same thing here. I have been constantly surprised at a closer reading of the originals. Like I always thought that Shakuni was behind the enmity b/w the Pandavas & Kauravas, until I read his advice to Duryodhan in Sabha Parva. Similarly, I thought that Drona never taught Karna, but actually, he did for the initial stages. Similarly, I was surprised to learn that the name Karna didn't come to him until he had given away his kavacha-kundalas

It's important to keep an open mind in having one's prior misconceptions corrected while watching & reading.

@amritat:thanks for sharing that like i said earlier whether we like it or not people do believe whatever they see in the show .I mean what should i say about others my own family does that most of the times i find myslef defending Bheem's character to my family when they call him stupid i keep telling that epic's bheem was great and he did alot other than eat food and not beleive this serial. The other day my sister said that she feels bad for arjuna and drau as they sacrificed their love for each other and i had to tell her that Drau never loved arjun when she married him becuase she didnt even know it was arjuna she thought he was a brahmin. So when even my own family believes this MB what should i say about others
@interpedia:agreed.I wont say BRC was flawless it did digress at few places but still it was way better than this MB and quite close to the epic when compared to this MB.I mean i dont remember distortions like including fictional characters(primvada) or showing things earlier than when they happpened(arjuna and subhadra meeting)
and like interpida pointed out earlier there is something known as moral responsibility.Even if viewers dont beleive this MB dont the makers have a moral responsibilty to show our heroes in the correct and respectful way?

Exactly Vrish. These people on Facebook WILL NOT accept the truth. They will argue n abuse with little knowledge thay have. One should be flexible while reading an epic like Mahabharat.

It's alright to have favourites. But every character has its own flaw, except Lord Krishna. Loving a character does not mean dat one will overlook its faults n focus on the faults of others.

amritat, the FB guys who are correcting this serial are right, but there are a lot of preconceived ideas that most people have but are surprised by, were they to actually read the originals.

Some Facebook people don't even know wat is right. They try to defend their misconceptions. How disgusting!!
