Nowdays if such case occurs, that is if a woman's pregnancy prolongs beyond the normal period, then labour is 'induced' with the help of doctors to deliver the baby, or else the baby will die. Either hormonal medications are given or surgical techniques are used to do so.
Don't know if during Gandhari's time such treatment was possible or not. Though Ayurveda and surgery methods were well-known in ancient India.

TFS :)

It was so ruthless of Dhritarashtra to talk to his pregnant wife like that I agree... this issue is still prevalent in India, including cities! Hence it can be related to even today!

Thanks for the answer. I cant wait for today's episode. She got into labour by inducing pain and something horrible happened. 😭

In post term pregnancy baby is usually fully developed unlike gandhari's pregnancy where the baby's organs had not begin to be formed at all even after 15 months!
Induction of labour seems to be a simple procedure compared to putting pieces of that lump into hundred pots and developing it into 100 + babies! Besides they seem to have had surrogacy and sperm bank ...or did they 😕

the putting of the lumps and incubating them in the pots seems to me like a symbolic way of showing test tube babies

but can womb hold the volume and weight of fully developed 100 babies?
nowadays doctors say that in case of triplets or quadraplets if the total weight of babies reaches 12 pounds , the body incudes labour irrespective of the growth of the babies.
in case of a 100 babies this weight would have been reached before their complete formation. hence as self preservation the growth would have become stagnant inside the womb. maybe they had to be grown in test tubes and normal delivery seems impossible!
