MAIN SHAYAR TO NAHI...
Part 1

(Sep 2014)

Madhu: "I just want to have sex. Sex sex sex. Riggghhhttt now..."
Trishna: "Madhubala! God someone get hold of this girl. Madhu you've gone nuts you know that."
Madhu: "No Miss Trishna Chattopadhyay! I am not nuts. Natasha is nuts."
Natasha: "Oh hello! I am not even drinking tonight. It's the two of you who have lost it entirely."
Trishna: "Well I am sane."
Madhu: "Duh it's my birthday. How dumb would it be if I were sane? I want to partayyy. Let's put some Yo Yo Honey Singh music."
Natasha: "Oh please no. Not again."
Trishna: "Ok. Then I am going to put on some slow romantic old hindi movie music."
Madhu: "Nooo. Not today. That's what we do every day. I want some excitement today. Let's do something fun!"
Trishna: "Like what?"
Madhu: "Let's have sexxx"
Trishna: "Honey, sorry, I'm not a lesbian."
Natasha: "Well. I would have been happy to oblige you sweetheart - afterall, being bisexual has its advantages, doubles your options - but you're too straight for me. You need a man."
Madhu: "But men are so dumb and so boring."
Natasha: "Oh come on. Not everybody is boring. You just have really high standards."
Madhu: (pouts) "I am 24 and I have never had a boyfriend. Nobody likes me!"
Trishna: "That's enough. You've had five glasses already. Keep that bottle of wine away. Nuts, take this. Otherwise Madhu is going to go out of control. Madhu, stop. Drama queen!"
Madhu: (fake cries)"Now Trish doesn't like me either. Nobody likes me."
Trishna: "Oh shut up! You know I love you. And I've seen how many guys have fallen left, right, center for you in the last six years that I've known you. You just don't give them any bhaav."
Madhu: "They were all losers. I couldn't love them."
Natasha: "What's love got to do with the sex?"

Trishna: "Ask her. I suspect she read too many Mills and Boons when she was sixteen and has some crazy dreams about some knight in shining armor and one true, everlasting love. So until she finds that night, she can't love. And until she falls in love, she won't marry. And until she marries..."

Natasha: "...she won't have sex? Wow. I'd have never guessed from knowing her in office that she'd be such a hopeless romantic deep down. She is smart, ambitious, practical and most importantly - logical! Madhu, here's one tip for you. Virginity is seriously over-rated. Just a notion those MCP men invented to keep women in control while they themselves did whatever they wanted until they were ready to settle with an untouched woman and make her their property. I can understand believing in love, and if you're in a relationship you must be faithful, but I'd think you know better than sit around like a Sati Savitri waiting for a man to come and make you complete in some way by claiming ownership."

Trishna: "Madhu do you still write romantic poetry hoping some guy would read it and be swept off his feet, leave everything else and become totally devoted to you forever in one instant..."
Madhu: "Shut up both of you. Stop ganging up on me. I didn't introduce my old best friend and my new best friend so that you can both gang up and do my character assassination."
Trishna: "We are now flatmates as well (chuckling)."
Madhu: "For less than a week. You only came to Mumbai six days back Madam. And Nuts and I have been living here almost a year now."
Natasha: "Okay okay. We're teasing you. Now, stop fighting. It's Madhu's birthday. Let's get Madhu what she wants."
Trishna: "Eww. If you two are going to have sex right now, pls do it in Madhu's room. It's further away from mine."
Natasha: "Ha ha. No. As i said she's too straight. So we are all going out, we are all going to party, and we will see if we can get this one laid for real."
Madhu: "What? No I am not picking up some random guy in a bar."
Natasha: "Then what do you want. I can call someone who knows someone who we can pay..."
Madhu: "Oh shut up. I am not that desperate."
Natasha: "Well you're the one who's been going sex sex sex all evening."
Madhu: "I want sex. But first I want love. True love"

Trishna: "Yawn. And there it starts again. Baby, there's no marketplace for love where you can buy it. There's no ISI mark that certifies which love is true. And there's no such thing as true love at first sight, which is what it would have to be for you to potentially get any action tonight."
Madhu: (throws pillow) "I hate you Trish."
Trishna: "I love you too darling."
Natasha: "You're both crazy. Whatever. Get up. We are still going to the Blue Frog. Leave the wine, Madhu, or you won't be able to walk straight and get changed. It's your birthday!"

******************************************************************************

Trishna: "Wow this place is awesome."
Natasha: "Told ya. And great crowd too. Too bad I already have a boyfriend."
Trishna: "Oh come on. Vishal is so nice. And so hot."
Natasha: "Hello woman. You've met him once! And yes he's hot, but don't put your eyes on him. He's mine!"
Trishna: "Don't worry. I have no intention of stealing your boyfriend. Besides, I'm still not over Sultan."
Natasha: "Oh I'm sorry babes. I know you came to Mumbai partly to get over him. And heartbreaks suck, I know. But you're strong."

Trishna: "Yeah, yeah. I'm fine, I guess. It's just the alcohol talking. I do still love him a lot - it doesn't just disappear over night. But we broke up for good reason. He was so possessive. It just wasn't healthy. And he wasn't going to change. He was always like that. You know, when Madhu and I were in our final year in college, he used to stalk us every day. Madhu in fact...Oh hello, Madhu madam, where are you staring at?
Madhu: "Uh..nothing...I am not staring anywhere."
Trishna: "So I was just telling Natasha about the time Sultan used to stalk us on way from college and you went and threatened him and scared the shit out of him. She actually called the cops, but he ran away before they came."
Natasha: "Wow"
Trishna: "Yep. It was pretty crazy. You know these guys...they see these Bollywood movies and think they can just decide among themselves which girl is theirs and then they have an open license to stalk her or force her or try to protect her until she comes around. As if girls are just their property. It's so annoying."
Natasha: "Tell me about it. My ex-boyfriend used to boss me around on what I can wear and where I can go. As if I need to ask his permission for everything. So I told him unless he expected to ask me for permission for everything, he needed to back off. Relationship has to be built on equality and trust..."
Trishna: "I totally agree. Unfortunately I was too stupid and silly. Especially after college, I started doing my masters and Madhu also came here, so there was no one to talk sense into me. Sultan came back, and I started liking all the attention he was giving me. I knew he wasn't perfect but I thought I could change him once we were together. Rookie mistake."
Natasha: "Touche. But everyone does it. Glad you're out of it now."
Trishna: "Yeah. Madhu, what...- wait, where is Madhu?"
Natasha: "She was just here. Ummm...there she is. Wait, is she going to talk to a guy? Who's that?"

*********************************************************************************

Madhu: "Good morning"
Natasha: "Good morning beautiful. So how was last night?"
Madhu: "I don't know. But right now my head is exploding."
Natasha: "Ha ha. Here's something for you to feel better. Who told you to drink that much?"
Madhu: "No one. You know I rarely drink, and I've never drank so much as yesterday, I don't know what the hell was going on."
Natasha: "Well you really wanted to have sex for one."
Madhu: "Ha ha. You know I was kidding. Oh God, coffee feels so good right now."
Natasha: "I am not so sure you were kidding. (Madhu hits her) Ok Ok. Nobody's calling you desperate sati savitri. Ha ha. Ok. But what's the story behind this RK?"
Madhu: "Rishabh?"
Natasha: "Yep, Rishabh. That guy you met at the bar and abandoned us for. And then the whole way back in the taxi you were doing RK RK."
Madhu: I was too drunk, so stop making fun of me. I swear I am never touching alcohol again.
Natasha: Trish said he was your first crush.
Madhu: Umm. No. Nothing like that. He's just...an old friend.

******************************************************************************

Madhu: (reading to herself) -Marz aisa hamara be-ilaaj na hota |
Jaan jaate agar ishq tum se bhala kyon hai ||
Trishna: (knocking) Madhu! What are you doing? Come out of your room. Dinner's ready.
Madhu: Coming.

(living room)
Trishna: What were you doing in there all evening? I know today's Sunday, but doesn't mean you spend the entire day cooped up on your bed not having any fun.
Madhu: I had enough fun last night for the whole year. I was just relaxing and reading my old diary.
Trishna: Ah! That explains it!
Madhu: What?
Trishna: This smile that you have on your face.
Madhu: Nothing like it. Where's Nuts?
Trishna: She went out for dinner with Vishal.
Madhu: Hmm.
Trishna: So?
Madhu: What?
Trishna: What's the deal with RK, what else?
Madhu: There's no deal. Just a high school friend. I saw him yesterday so said hi.

Trishna: You did more than say hi. You were gone for a half hour. And when you came back, you were even more drunk than you left us. And then we had to carry you home in a taxi while you were happily mumbling his name. So, don't tell me there's nothing. I've known you for a long time, you can't lie to me.What really happened?

Madhu: Nothing happened Trish. I said hi. He didn't recognize me at first. I was about to leave when he suddenly did and came after me. Then we talked for a bit. He got to know it was my birthday, so his friends got some tequila shots. Then his girlfriend shows up.

Trishna: Girlfriend?
Madhu: Yeah, whatever. Then I came back. It was nothing.
Trishna: Hmm. (after some time) He is the same guy, isn't he?

Madhu: (pauses) Yes. And no. He's the same guy. But he's no longer the same person. And I am not, either. It's been years, Trish. Look at me and how much I've changed. RK is history.

PART 2

(later that night)

Madhu: Hello?
RK: Hi Madz.
Madhu: RK...I mean Rishabh? Is that you?
RK: Yep. Recognized my voice?
Madhu: Yes. No. I mean...nobody else ever called me Madz.
RK: Yeah, you hated that didn't you. That's why you insisted on calling me RK because it annoyed me so much.
Madhu: Not really. I mean, it was all a bit silly.
RK: I think it was cute.
Madhu: So what made you call out of the blue?
RK: Well, I told you yesterday I'd call, right? That's why I took your number.
Madhu: Oh you did. Umm...I'm sorry. I got too drunk last night. I never drink and...anyway, I don't really remember a lot.
RK: Ohh. You do remember meeting me, though?
Madhu: Yeah. Yeah. It was good to see you.
RK: It was. I never thought I'd see you again. Thank you for coming up to me.
Madhu: You should thank the wine for that. I don't think I'd have done that without it. Especially because you didn't even remember me.
RK: It's not like that. I mean...I am sorry Madz...I remembered you, but I didn't recognize you when I saw you last night. Here in Mumbai, in a pub of all places. And you look so...different. I mean...nice. You look nice. I mean you looked nice before too. It's just.
Madhu: Relax RK. I mean Rishabh. It's been too long.
RK: Call me RK only Madz. Sounds good when you say it.
Madhu: So what do you do now RK?

************************************************************************************

(Feb 2006)

Roma: Hello? Where are you lost Madam? (looks around) Oh really, are you staring at that Rishabh boy again?
Madhu: No nothing like that.
Roma: Oh come on Madhubala. You are the worst smitten kitten there is in the entire tenth grade. And Rishabh Kundra doesn't even know you exist. Why don't you talk to him?
Madhu: That's not true Roma. I don't like him.

Roma: Seriously. You're lying to me even now. I've sat next to you for two full years and I've noticed where all your attention is. I'm telling you, go talk to him. Today is the last day of class ten. Who knows, what if he doesn't come back to the school in eleventh grade.
Madhu: Stop it Roma. I am not talking to anyone. I don't care about Rishabh or anyone else. Stop teasing me.
Roma: Oh really? Wait a second. Let's see your diary.
Madhu: Hey, give me back my diary.
Roma: Not so soon. Let's read it out and see what you feel. I'm sick of your lies.
Madhu: Roma. Come back.
Roma: (running away) No way.
Madhu: Roma! I swear I will...

Roma: (reading loudly) Hours, days, weeks, months...and still the same voices. His same voice, and the same ease with which it rides over and above the din and reach my ears somehow, every single time. The noise of his breath, the screams of his soft footsteps, the clamour of the same old keychain in his hand, and the same eyes I can never-dare-look-into. The same him, the same me. And the same nothing. Just the voices. Just RK.

Madhu: (almost in tears) Give the diary back to me.
Roma: (manages to run away) Oh come on Madhu. Let's see this. One week ago. Annual day.

He was sitting next to me today, and time stopped. For the next thirty one minutes and twelve seconds, I could not move, listen, or talk. Perhaps the crowd around was still cheering for the performance, there must have been applause and hootings, my friend sitting next to me might have said something to me, or attempted to restore the chatter we were into before I fell silent, perhaps his animated conversations with all his friends alluded to me as well, perhaps he...ah, I don't know!
I just don't know what was happening till the hall was flooded with lights and celebrations , and everyone disappeared. It feels as if someone just stole a slice of time from my life; he has stolen a slice of my life itself.

Madhu: Roma please. (now crying)
Roma: Ok. Take it. But don't lie to me. And to yourself. I know this happened. I was the friend sitting next to you. And I know very well who came and sat on the other side after the break. Why do you keep denying it?

Madhu: Because I don't know. I am not supposed to be doing all this. It's driving me nuts, but I'm..what...16? What do I know about love? And then RK...I mean Rishabh. He doesn't even know my name. He's the rich popular dude and I am the shy mousy geek. Our worlds will never meet. This is just a stupid crush. It will go away.

Roma: Ok. I am sorry. Stop crying. I really am sorry. See, I'm holding my ears for you.

(Oct 2014)

Madhu: Hello
RK: Woah. What's with the angry hello?
Madhu: Oh sorry RK. I was just...
RK: What happened? Who is causing you to boil today?
Madhu: Ohhh I just want to kill all men today.
RK: Ok. I get it. I am going to hang up now. Bye Madz
Madhu: No RK. Wait. Sorry. I am just taking out frustration on you for no reason.
RK: So who is the irresponsible reprehensible man who's caused madam to be so furious? Your...um..your boyfriend?
Madhu: Boyfriend...no. No no I don't do boyfriend woyfriend crap.
RK: Even now! Madz how old are you? Don't tell me you still believe...

Madhu: No no. I mean. Whatever. I am not talking about me. It's just that my best friend Trishna. Her boyfriend - actually her ex-boyfriend - got hold of her new number and was harassing her. He's a jerk. Thinks just because she loved him, she would forgive everything. But she's moved on, and I guess his ego can't take it. You know he'd actually hit her when she broke up.

RK: Ok ok. First take a deep breath. Now tell me, is this guy dangerous?
Madhu: No. At least nothing I can't handle.
RK: I'm sure. I still remember how wild and furious you can be when angry.
Madhu: Shut up RK. I just want Trish to stay away and be happy. Anyway, sorry I'm rambling about my problems. What made you call all of a sudden?

RK: Well I told you last time when I called that we should meet up. And you totally dodged the topic. So here I am, calling you again to ask if you'd like to meet for lunch tomorrow.

Madhu: Lunch..umm..why?
RK: Because it's been three weeks and I can't keep the sight of you out of my eyes.
Madhu: Stop flirting with me RK. What would your girlfriend think?
RK: Girlfriend? What girlfriend? I broke up with my last one almost a year ago.
Madhu: Oh that girl...oh never mind. Still, don't flirt with me. You know I don't like it. I don't want to be a part of some long list of Rishabh Kundra's conquests.
RK: You already made the list six years ago. Remember?
Madhu: RK. I don't want to...
RK: Ok sorry Madz, let's not talk about that. But seriously, you still think I'm the 16 year old Rishabh Kundra who went around flirting with the whole school. I'm no longer that idiot, sweetheart.
Madhu: Still.
RK: Arey I'm not trying to hit on you. I just want to catch up with you, as friends. We were good friends once, remember.
Madhu: Yes.
RK: So I still think of you as my friend. Unless you don't want to be friends with me...
Madhu: No, there's nothing like that.
RK: Well, you were the one who moved away. And went to college and never kept in touch. So maybe...
Madhu: Okay. You win. Let's not go there. Now where do you want to meet tomorrow?

*****************************************************************************

(entering house)

Madhu: What's going on here?
Natasha: Trish and I went to the cops and got a restraining order against Sultan.
Madhu: And?
Trishna: He's been warned. Hopefully he'll stay away now.
Natasha: Yeah. We faxed the order to him and then I think the inspector's phone call took away all the Shahrukh Khan-ism inside Mr Shahrukh Khan away for good. I'm telling you, if he was in front of me...

Trishna: Leave it Nuts. It's over. I should have walked out of that relationship much before I did. We girls are so stupid sometimes. We think arrogance and ego is something good and cool, like some deserved attitude or something. It's bullshit. I wish I'd stopped justifying his actions in my head long ago. Every time he'd do something stupid or hurtful, then he'd come and apologize or justify and I'd let it go. But you know what, situations change, behaviors don't. He never respected me, and love without respect is nothing. Right, Madhu?

Madhu: Huh. Yeah. Yeah you're right. Love without respect is temporary infatuation.
Natasha: Ok, enough. It's Friday. We should party to celebrate. There's no heart break some wine won't solve. Anyway it's been three weeks since Madhu got drunk and asked for sex.
Madhu: Very funny.
Trishna: Ha ha. Actually I'm behind on my deadlines so I got some work to do. But maybe we can do lunch tomorrow?
Madhu: Let's do dinner instead. I have to meet a friend for lunch.
Trishna: Friend?

*******************************************************************************

(Aug 2007)

RK: Hi Madz!
Madhu: (looks around) What? Me?
RK: Yeah. Who else is here?
Madhu: You are talking to me? Really?
RK: Yes.
Madhu: Are you okay? Unwell? Is this is a bet?
RK: (sitting next to her) No Madz.
Madhu: Ok. So you want to talk to me?
RK: Umm. Yes Madz. Is that ok?
Madhu: My name is -
RK: - Madhubala. Jeez. We've been in the same class for 2 years.
Madhu: Four.
RK: What?
Madhu: Four years.
RK: Really? Right. So Madz...
Madhu: Madhubala.
RK: Madz is better. Listen Madz, I was wondering if you'd give me your Physics notes. You know the exam is next week and...
Madhu: (smiling) Yeah, sure. Here you go. I can even teach them to you if you want!
RK: Thanks, but no thanks. I'll get them xeroxed and return them to you. I don't really care about physics. I'll pass somehow. But Ria would be so happy.
Madhu: Ria?
RK: Yeah. Ria Choudhary. She's in 12th B. You know her?
Madhu: Hmm (nodding)
RK: She's hot right? Anyway, she told me she wouldn't make out with me unless I got her notes. Something about her father being strict etc. And I was afraid she'd start crying again. Thank you though. You're a genius. Now I will get a french...I mean...thanks. You're a good friend.

Madhu: Friend?
RK: Yeah, we're friends right? Ok bye.
Madhu: Bye RK.
RK: RK?
Madhu: Oops. Sorry. Rishabh. Bye Rishabh.
RK: Bye Madz

(Sep 2007)

Tumhe zulfon mein apni uljhane ka mann hai
Tumhe aur paas thoda bulane ka mann hai
Tadapta hai kitna ye dil tumhare liye
Nazron se aaj tumhe batlane ka mann hai

RK: Hey Madz. What are you writing there?
Madhu: RK! Hi! When did you come?
RK: When you were smiling to yourself and deeply engrossed in that diary of yours. Show me!
Madhu: No way. It's my personal diary RK.
RK: How many times have I told you not to call me RK?
Madhu: How many times have I told you not to call me Madz?

RK: But Madz is better. What kind of a name is Ma-dhooo-baa-laaa. It is as old-fashioned as these thick spectacles you wear. (seeing Madhu's disappointed face) OK I didn't mean to hurt you. But seriously, Madz. Look around yourself. All these girls in our class dress up. And you still put oil in your hair and braid it and come to class.

Madhu: I know I am not pretty.
RK: But you're intelligent. Anyway, I like that you're like this.
Madhu: You do?
RK: Yeah. That way none of my girlfriends get jealous if I hang with you.
Madhu: Hmm. How's Chetna?
RK: I broke up with her. She was getting too clingy.
Madhu: Seriously? That's your third girlfriend since the month started. But she wasn't your type anyway.
RK: So what? You say that about every girl I date. I am trying to make a record here. Of kissing every single girl in school before I graduate.
Madhu: (jaw drops) What?
RK: Yep. Maybe not every girl. But I want a half century and I'm at 36 already. Close your mouth or you'll eat a mosquito.

Madhu: You know that's stupid, right? Doesn't anything mean anything to you? Don't you actually really truly like someone? (dreamily) Like when you see them, the world lights up and everything becomes better. And then you want to be with them, making them happy, forever.

RK: No. I measure happiness by tongue, boobs and legs. Actually lips, boobs, legs - it's my propreitary score. If I can get to second base everyday, I'll be happy forever.
Madhu: Eww.
RK: But the way you were just talking about love, tell me, who's it?
Madhu: Who's what?
RK: Who lights up your world? Pun intended.
Madhu: No one. I don't do this love shove boyfriend voyfriend crap.

RK: Come on. You know Roma - she was in our class in tenth and then switched schools - she told me you wrote poetry for your crushes.
Madhu: (Shocked) She told you whaaat?
RK: I don't exactly remember. I didn't know her that well. But once we were talking about poets in class and she said you were the best. Wait, is that what you were writing in your diary when I came. Show me.
Madhu: Nooo. Besides none of my poems have boobs for you to be interested in.
RK: But I bet they have..ahem...interesting male organs. Assuming you're straight. Are you?

Madhu: Yes and ewww. RK you're disgusting.
RK: Madz you're blushing. Oh my God. I didn't think you could blush! Now I have to know. Who's your latest crush? Is it Pratyush?
Madhu: Pratyush? No!
RK: Arjun?
Madhu: No
RK: Mohan? Bobby? Pranav?
Madhu: Nooo. Please RK.
RK: Ok. I don't know any more geeks.
Madhu: Who says my choice is the geeky type?
RK: No? Oh well. Come to think of it there used to be a rumor in class that you had a crush on me once upon a time. So maybe..
Madhu: What????!??

RK: Oh it was nothing. I think Roma said something to Neha who said something to Bobby who...I don't even know if it was true. Maybe they made it up. They would link my name with a new girl every day those days. Maybe they ran out of names and came to you at last. Even though you're not the type...Anyway, where were we? Right, the current subject of your poetry.

Madhu: There's nothing. I don't believe in these stupid childish crushes. I got to go now.

Part 3

(Feb 2008)

RK: Wow Madz. You really dressed up today. Sari and all. You look great. And where are your glasses?
Madhu: Um. Thanks. It's the Farewell party, so. And I finally got contact lenses.
RK: Nice.
Madhu: You look great.
RK: I know. Come with me, I need to tell you something. (takes aside) So you know what, I dumped Smriti yesterday. You were right, she wasn't my type.
Madhu: So you came without a date today?

RK: Yeah, but it's not like I'd leave without one. Today's the last day at school, and it's special. Today I have to confess something to someone who's really really special to me. Not like these dumbwit bimbos who keep throwing themselves at me. All that was stupid meaningless stuff. But today I have to win over the girl who's the nicest and the most beautiful in my eyes. Beauty and brains And guess what, my count after Smriti is 49. Will you help me get a half century?
Madhu: RK...I...I...

RK: Madz, look there she comes. Will you please come with me and introduce me?
Madhu: Where?
RK: There baba. Look. Tanya. Wow. Her dress is so sexy. She's looking out of the world. Come no Madz please. You know her. She's the class president of section A, just like you are for us. And she's in your book club too. She's hot but also super smart and a little elitist. I know I can impress her with my looks alone, but it would be so much better if you introduce me as your friend once. Just once. She'd respect me more. I can handle the rest. Please.
Madhu: Yeah. Of course. Yeah, sure.

(later that night)

Madhu: RK? Is that you? What are you doing out here alone?
RK: I am just...where are you going?
Madhu: I am going home.
RK: Already. It's only 9 pm.
Madhu: Yeah. I...I wasn't feeling well. Besides, you know I don't like parties. And it's not like I have too many friends in there. But why are you here? I saw you dancing with Tanya.
RK: Yeah. Tanya...that...yeah it didn't work out.
Madhu: What happened?
RK: Well, I didn't like her attitude. Turns out she's not really as nice as she looks. She was saying some things...anyway, I don't think she's worth it. Not my type.
Madhu: RK. What's wrong? You know you can't lie to me.
RK: Let her be. I don't want to talk about it. Come, I will drop you home.
Madhu: Me. No, no. I can go. I'll find an auto. You go inside.
RK: Come on Madz. It's late. I'll drop you. I don't feel like going back to the party anyway. I don't want to see anybody there. People are a lot more fake than they come across. Come. I guess I am graduating on 49 not out (grins)

(outside Madhu's colony)

Madhu: RK. Stop here. I'll go from here.
RK: Outside the colony? Are you sure?
Madhu: Yeah. You'll have trouble reversing your car from here anyway. I can go.
RK: Ok. (steps out of car)
Madhu: (hugs RK) Thank you RK. Thank you for everything.
RK: Thank you Madz. You're such a good friend. (Madhu leans over and kisses RK on his lips) What was that for?
Madhu: Number 50. For completing your target. May not be the best one, but what the hell, at least you met your goal.. Hide that one off the list. (smiles and breaks away) Bye RK

RK: (lost in thought, then recovers) Madz, give me your phone number. I still don't have it and we won't see each other in school. How will we stay in touch?
Madhu: I have yours. I will call you.

Jannat-e-khwab na mila to kya
Aansoo-on se bheega aanchal hi sahi
Mohabbat mein sab kuch lutane wale
Hum pehle bhi na the aakhiri bhi nahi

************************************************************

(Oct 2014)

RK: You never called.
Madhu: Yeah. I...I lost your number.
RK: You never could lie to me either.
Madhu: Um..you know...
RK: It's ok. It's been too long. How have you been? You look good.
Madhu: You look good too. You joined your father's business?
RK: Yeah. My dad says I have become more responsible now.
Madhu: And my dad says I have become naughty.
RK: Interesting! Just how naughty are you Madz? (grinning)
Madhu: Shut up RK. (after a pause) So, still going at 4 girlfriends a month?
RK: Ha ha. No. I gave up after school. I had 2 girlfriends in college. The second one lasted two years, but then, you know it didn't work out. And then there was this family friend - I dated her for a while - our parents wanted to see maybe we could get married some day. She was sweet. But anyway that ended about a year ago. That's it.

Madhu: Why did it end?
RK: You know, she wasn't my type.
Madhu: Just what is your type?
RK: I don't know. You were the one who always knew who was my type. Anyway, she loved someone else. No sweat.
Madhu: Hmm. God, we were so crazy back in school. I said the stupidest things.
RK: (laughing) You didn't even come close to my level, Madz.
Madhu: (joins laughter) That's true. What did you have - a lips, boobs, legs score?
RK: Yeah, RK's LBL score.
Madhu: That was so silly.
RK: True. (pauses) And apparently, I was blind too. I never rated you.

(one week later)

Trishna: Madhu! What...you're sitting with your diary again? Show me what you're writing. Ever since you met RK, you've been so much more lost. What happened to my stupid bouncy crazy fun Madhu?

Madhu: Nothing like that darling. I am right here. I was looking for a book that Nuts wanted, when I saw this. Last year's diary.

Trishna: Show me. Hmm. Poetry.
Yoon to tumhein bhool gaye hain hum
Kayi kayi mahine beet jate hain
bina tumhari yad ke
Par achanak kisi kisi raat
khud ko fir usi mod pe paate hain
Jahan tum...

Natasha: Trish! Madhu! (entering room) What are you both doing here?
Madhu: Nothing. Here. Found your book. Come let's go outside and catch a movie.
Trishna: I'm still reading.
Madhu: Leave it, it's crap. Let's go. Commmeee.

(in living room)

Trishna: It wasn't that much of a crap.
Natasha: What was it?
Trishna: Madhu's poetry. You still love him, don't you?
Madhu: What? Are you crazy? It's just stupid poetry. No reason, no inspiration. Come on, Trish, you've known me for so long. I write whatever comes to my mind. It's got nothing to do with RK.

Trishna: I didn't take RK's name. (pause) I used to believe you, but now I think, you never really got over him. That's why you kept rejecting everyone in college saying they're all shallow. You were comparing them with RK.

Madhu: That's not true at all Trish. In fact, in school, RK was the shallowest guy there was. You know he kissed 50 girls!
Natasha: (whistles) I am impressed. He kept a count?
Madhu: Yeah. And I helped him. (grinning)
Natasha: You helped him keep a count of his girlfriends. That's hilarious.

Madhu: It was stupid. But anyway, even at that time I knew I wasn't his type. All there was, was a stupid crush once upon a time, before I even knew him. You know how puppy love is. But then I grew up, and then I got to know him better. He was nice, but you know he kept a score - Lips, Boobs, Legs - for every girl. I knew I was looking for true love. RK was never going to be it.

Trishna: And what about now? You said he's changed.
Natasha: Yeah, and don't think we don't notice you talking to him everyday. What's going on madam? Spill.

Madhu: Nothing is going on at all. He was a friend even back then and he was always nice. He's just a friend. Yes, he's changed, but I don't know him that well...and deep down, people don't really change that much.

Trishna: (staring at me) I can see that. That's why I think the 14 year old Madhu who was heads over heel in love with RK is still in there.
Madhu: Trish stop...(phone ringing)
Natasha: And...that's RK calling. I think that's a 'hence proved' for us.
Madhu: That proves nothing.
Natasha: Oh really. Then invite him over. Make him meet us. We will judge it if we'd see it with our own eyes. Go on, pick up the phone and call him. Or wait, I will invite him myself. (picks up Madhu's phone before she can) Hi RK, this is Natasha...

(2 hours later)
RK: Hi, I'm Rishabh.
Natasha: And I'm Nuts. For you.
RK: Excuse me?
Natasha: Kidding. I am Natasha. Nuts. Come in. Madhuuu, your RK's here.
Madhu: Shut up Nuts. Hey RK. Thanks for coming.
RK: No worries. Thanks for inviting me. So what's the occassion for the party?
Natasha: Oh it's out monthly Friday bash where Madhu likes to get sloshed drunk and make outrageous demands and makes us all crazy. So we called you for some help. Last month she was asking for sex.
RK: What?

Madhu: Shut up Natasha. She's only kidding, RK. And the only time I got sloshed drunk was last month because it was my birthday. Come in RK. Ignore her. (walking in) RK, that's Trishna, my other roommate and college friend. And that's Vishal, Natasha's boyfriend.
RK: Hi.
Trishna: Hi RK.
Vishal: Hi bro! Nice to meet you.

(a little while later)
RK: What are you doing here along in the balcony, Madz?
Madhu: Ah nothing. Just came for some air. Thanks for coming though, RK. I hope you're not too bored.
RK: No this is fun. Natasha and Trishna are both drunk and dancing like crazy on Honey Singh songs right now.
Madhu: Yeah. It's becoming a ritual around here. We're all pretty crazy.
RK: It's nice to see you have fun like this. You used to be so different in school.
Madhu: Yeah I was too serious and too uptight. Total opposite of all those girls you chased after. That's why you didn't like me.
RK: I did like you, Madz. You were my best friend.
Madhu: Really?
RK: Of course. You didn't know that.
Madhu: No. I mean you were the most popular kid...and I was...
RK: You were the only one in front of whom I was myself.
Madhu: (pauses) I am sorry RK. For not being in touch.
RK: I missed you.
Madhu: I missed you too. That's why I didn't keep in touch. It was...it was too painful.
RK: I didn't realize at that time, what we had...
Madhu: Forget it RK. The past is past.
RK: Hmm.(holds Madhu's hand while they both stare at the sky away from the balcony)
Madhu: What are you doing?
RK: Feels right to me. Doesn't it?
Madhu: (intertwines her fingers with RK's, then after a pause pulls away) I should go in and get the food heated for everyone. It's late.

(while eating)
Trishna: So RK. I mean Rishabh, sorry, I have spent all life hearing RK for you.
RK: (quizzically) All life? I didn't know Madhu used to talk about me.
Trishna: Only all the time.
Madhu: Stop exaggerating Trish. I might have told her once or twice. In the THREE years we were together at college, mind you.

Trishna: (giggling) Anyway, Rishabh, Madhu was saying you were the casanova at school.
RK: Yeah, don't I look the part? (smirks)
Natasha: You totally do, handsome.
Vishal: Ahem, ahem.
Natasha: Nobody beats you babe, obviously.
Vishal: Right. So Rishabh, what was your score like?
Natasha: Madhu said he kissed fifty girls in one year.
Vishal: 50! Wow! I don't think I reached 5 in my entire school career.
Natasha: 5?
Vishal: Oh come on babe. I am sure you have kissed more than 5 girls. Don't be jealous. Look at me, you stay with two sexy girls and I say nothing.
Natasha: That's true.
Vishal: So how did it feel like bro? 50 girls?
RK: Oh it was nothing. You know at the age. It's all hormones. None of those meant anything. Nothing special.
Madhu: None of them?
RK: Well, except one. But that one kiss was so incomplete. I'm only now starting to understand how profound that one experience was.

Part 4

(an hour later)

Madhu: I want more wiiinnneee!
Natasha: What? Now? Wait did you just finish that bottle.
Madhu: Or tequila!
Trishna: What's wrong with her? All evening you barely had one glass and now as soon as the boys left, you are getting drunk. Is everything okay Madhu?
Madhu: No. I just want winnneee.
Natasha: Trish will you sit with her for a bit. I need an aspirin. My head is killing me.
Madhu: (jumping up and down without music) Trishhh...I love you Trishhh...
Trishna: Madhu. (trying to make her sit) Yeah, yeah I love you too. Now sit down please. It's 2 am and you've suddenly gone nuts. (yelling) Sit down!
Madhu: (fake cries) You're yelling at me! You don't love me! Nobody loves me!
Trishna: Oh God not again! What happened to this girl? Madhu, Madhu. What happened darling? Did RK say something to you?
Madhu: (nodding head vigorously in denial) No. No. He said nothing.
Trishna: So is that the problem?
Madhu: It's what he didn't say. I just want wiiinneee.
Trishna: No. You just finished half a bottle in less than five minutes. I know your capacity. You'd be puking all over yourself if you had any more. Now sit here. I'll make coffee for you and me.
Madhu: I don't want a coffee. I want a kiss. Kisss.
Natasha: (coming out) Kiss? What, you've downgraded your demands from sex to just a kiss?
Madhu: It sounds so nice. Kiss kiss kiss.
Trishna: Madhu. Stop yelling. You'll wake the whole building and they will call the cops.
Madhu: I don't care. I am going to yell. Kisss kisss kisss wine kiss kiss.
Natasha: Oh my God, girl. You're losing it everyday. (doorbell rings) See, someone's already here. Trish, will you bhagao the neighbour? (kisses Madhu on the cheek) Here, I just kissed you ok. Now calm down. Shhh.
Madhu: Nooo. Not this kiss. Not your kiss.
Natasha: Then what? You want to kiss RK?
Madhu: Yes, I want to kiss RK again.
Natasha: Again?
Madhu: Yes. Again. It's been seven years. Kisss kisss kiss kisss kisss

(at door)

Trishna: Rishabh?
RK: Yeah, sorry if I woke you up. I forgot my...(hearing Madhu's yelling kiss kiss) Is that Madz?
Trishna: Ummm. Yes. She creamed half a bottle as soon as you left. Come.
RK: What? But it was just 15 minutes...
(entering in)
Madhu: I want to kiss RK again.
Natasha: Again?
Madhu: Yes. Again. It's been seven years. Kisss kisss kiss kisss kisss

RK: (coughs)
Madhu: (looks at him and immediately quiets down, then whispers) Nutss...psst..Nuts...
Natasha: (grinning at the whole situation) What?
Madhu: (whispers) I think I am hallucinating.
RK: (walks past Madhu and picks up his phone from the table) You're not hallucinating, Madz.
Madhu: (shuts her eyes) Nuts, I am going crazy.
RK: (Walks closer to her) Well you are crazy, Madz.
Madhu: (opens her eyes) RK?
RK: Yep. (smirking) So you got drunk as soon as I left.
Madhu: No. Umm...I...
RK: So what are you new demands this time?
Madhu: Nothing. Nothing. I think I should sleep.
RK: Yeah, you should.
Natasha: (grinning) Come, let's go sleep babes. (holds Madhu)
RK: I'll help you. (picks Madhu up) Where's her room?
Natasha: Follow me.
RK: (to Madhu in his arms) Sleep babes. (to Natasha) Is she always this crazy?
Natasha: She's crazy, but this drunk crazy seems a relatively recent development. (both laugh)
Madhu: What?
RK: Nothing. Go to sleep. (puts her on her bed, then pulls her blanket) Good night. (Natasha switches off light and leaves. RK stands to leave too, then turns back and gives Madhu a soft kiss on her cheek) Good night Madz.

****************************************************************

(next morning)

Madhu: What the f*** happened last night?
Natasha: Oh well. Madam is up.
Madhu: (looks at clock) It's noon already! Oh God, I am so screwed.
Natasha: Chillax babe. How are you feeling?
Madhu: Like crap. Gawd, did all that really happen? I was screaming around the house at 2 am, wasn't I? What's wrong with me? Why did I drink?
Natasha: Yeah Madhu, why did you drink? What happened suddenly after the party ended?
Madhu: I don't know. I was just...Oh God. Never let me close to alcohol again, ok? I am so stupid.
Natasha: (giving her some lemonade to drink) Yep. You are. You have zero capacity and no filter whatsoever when drunk. Anyway, are you going to tell me what happened between you and RK?
Madhu: RK? (remembering RK giving her a good night kiss) RK came back here, didn't he? Oh f***!
Natasha: Yeah, he forgot his phone. Must say he was super amused to see you.
Madhu: Shit. Now he'll think I am a bewdi.
Natasha: I don't think you need to worry too much. I saw how he was looking at you last night. And when you said you wanted to kiss him, he...
Madhu: I said what?!!! (sitting down) Oh God!
Natasha: Yeah, about that. You said you wanted to kiss him again. The first time was seven years ago. Now that's a story you've never told us before.
Madhu: Damn. It was nothing. Hardly a kiss. I just...it was the last time I saw him...he...I wanted him to have his 50 kisses...miss his target.
Natasha: (smiling) Is that all you wanted? No personal interest?
Madhu: Sigh. I am whipped, am I not? I spend years trying to get over him, then I run into him and in no time I am acting like a love-crazed puppy all over again.
Natasha: Love? You love him?
Madhu: Yes...no...I don't know (holds her head) No. No it's not love. It was just my first crush, and it was just so strong, it's hard to forget that feeling. This is just stupid hormones or something. RK was always the wrong guy for me. Damn. I don't love him. I need to stay away though till I learn how to behave.
Natasha: Hang on. Don't get ahead of yourself. You're rationalizing. Breathe. (pauses) Okay. You like RK?
Madhu: Of course. He's my friend.
Natasha: But you like like RK? And he likes likes you?
Madhu: He doesn't. He never did. Oh God this is so wrong.
Natasha: But you said yourself that you're not the same person. He's not the same person. And I saw the way he looked at you when he was holding you in his arms. Wouldn't you give this a chance? Maybe, just maybe, something would happen...something new? That is if you still like him for who he is.
Madhu: (thinks, then softly says) I do. I mean, I think I do. And he did hold my hand yesterday (Remembers the kiss but doesn't say it)
Natasha: Then take it easy. Don't over think it. Maybe something would happen. Maybe you'd really grow to like him, for real. Or maybe not. But if you run away from now, you'd never find out. Ok?
Madhu: (to herself) I suppose he cannot break my heart more than he already did in the past. (to Natasha) Ok. I wouldn't run (holding her head) I am so screwed Nuts. You promise you would never let me drink so much again.
Natasha: (Smiling) Yes. You're such a handful to handle anyway.
Madhu: (grins) And you will not tell anyone what we just talked about. Not even Trish or Vishal. Ok?

*********************************************************************

(a week later)
Trishna: So how was brunch?
Madhu: Was fun. We went to my favorite book cafe.
Natasha: That boring book place of yours? Poor Rishabh.
Madhu: He didn't say he minded.
Trishna: Well he must have liked it, or why would he go otherwise? It's not like you forced him.
Madhu: (thoughtfully) No. But he did look restless and fidgety.
Natasha: Well, did you at least kiss him?
Madhu: No!
Trishna: Why would she kiss him? Wait, are you dating him?
Madhu: No. Of course not.
Natasha: Yeah. Of course not. And doesn't look like it's going to change very soon.

(another week later)
Natasha: Where are you so lost Madam?
Madhu: Nothing. Work.
Natasha: Yeah, right. (pointing at her laptop) I can see how much you're working.
Madhu: No. It's just...I got a wedding invite from a high school friend a few days back. She was in my book club. I had run into her a few months back, she works close by. Anyway, she is getting married to someone who also was in our class at school, though they were not a thing then.
Natasha: So?
Madhu: So nothing...I wasn't going...
Natasha: Why not?
Madhu: I wasn't exactly friends with many people at school. I kind of knew Tanya...but...anyway, I never fit into that crowd. I was serious, studious, ugly. I wasn't their type and they didn't like me much. So I am not looking forward to meeting them again.
Natasha: Hmmm
Madhu: Anyway, the guy Tanya is marrying happens to be RK's close friend. And he told him that I was invited to. RK texted me this morning if I wanted to go together and I am trying to think of the right excuse.
Natasha: Maybe you should go, Madhu. RK would be there so you wouldn't be totally bored. Besides, your high school friends should also see what an awesome person they missed being friends with. In fact, I say you should wear my new low cut black dress. They'd be totally dazzled and all those guys who never looked at you would be cursing themselves.
Madhu: Oh please! I don't want any of those guys!
Natasha: Okay. But how about RK? Maybe he'd like seeing you in that dress.
Madhu: Nuts don't be silly. I can't seduce him.I am anyway not his type. He likes...he used to be crazy about Tanya.
Natasha: The girl who's getting married?
Madhu: Yep. And she's insanely pretty as well as super smart.
Natasha: Well you're no less.
Madhu: Nuts but...
Natasha: Enough said. So when is the wedding?
Madhu: 20th. Three weeks.
Natasha: Ok. Tell RK you're coming. That's final.

**********************************************************************

(two weeks later)

Na kaha jaaye na rahaa jaaye
Na dil ka dard sahaa jaaye
Tere ishq ne dil ko kiya jo ghayal
Teri yaad aaye, meri jaan jaaye

RK: What you writing Madz?
Madhu: Oh! (surprised to see him) You're early. Nothing much.
RK: Come on Madz, show me. I didn't know you still write poetry for your crushes like you used to. You never showed me in school, at least show me now!
Madhu: (putting diary away) No RK. It's secret.
RK: But secrets are meant to be shared with at least some people.
Madhu: (playfully) Arey but I haven't yet shown it to the person I'm writing this for.
RK: Who?
Madhu: Now that's a real secret. But after I show him, I'll show you. Promise! Ok?
RK: (hurt) Uhh. Is he special?
Madhu: (grinning) Very very special! Now come, I am so hungry. Let's get some bhel poori before movie starts.

(two days later)
RK: Hi Madz.
Madhu: RK! What's up? Wait, aren't you in London for your conference.
RK: Yeah.
Madhu: What happened? Anything urgent?
RK: No. No no...I was just...I was missing you...I wanted to hear your voice.
Madhu: (speechless) RK...
RK: Um..soo...my presentation is in two hours. Would you wish me luck?
Madhu: Yes, of course. Best of luck RK. Though you don't need it, I am sure you'd do well. Don't be nervous.
RK: Thanks.
Madhu: Feel better now?
RK: Yeah
Madhu: You know you used to do a better job of hiding your nerves when you were younger.
RK: But you always knew if I was nervous. No matter how confident I eventually came across as, for things that matter...initially...but you'd always find out.
Madhu: Well, I was you best friend, like you said.
RK: Yes you were. You still are. You are the best. I... (stops himself)
Madhu: (awkward silence) Go RK, kill it...you're awesome. I need to get back to work. I'd see you when you're back.
RK: Right. Thank you.
Madhu: Bye.
RK: Bye Madz. (hangs up) (to himself) I love you so much.

(two days later)

RK: Madz!
Madz: RK, are you back?
RK: Yes, and guess what...
Madz: You got the deal.
RK: Yep. Listen can you meet me right now!
Madz: Um..now...RK...sorry I am with someone.
RK: (listening to the voices in the background) Oh right. Of course. Sorry.
Madz: Umm...one second (to someone in distance) I'm coming. Why don't you start Rohan? (some guy's voice) I'm not starting without you Madhu. I love you. I love you. (Madhu's laughter) (back on phone to RK) Sorry RK. So I was saying...I'm stuck today. But I'll see you tomorrow right. At the wedding.
RK: Yeah.
Madz: Ok got to go RK. Bye. (hangs up)
RK: (disturbed, to himself) Bye Madz.

***********************************************************

(next evening)

Natasha: (whistles) Wow Madz! I told you you're going to rock this outfit.
Madhu: Hmm. But don't you think it's a bit too...
Natasha: Nopes. Oh honey. If I want to make out so badly with you right now, I can't even imagine what RK is going to do...
Madhu: I don't know. He doesn't seem interested...oh well, maybe it is for the best. If he's not into me...
Natasha: What are you saying? Haven't you seen how much time he spends with you. Goes wherever you take him. Keeps calling you. And then, the way he looks at you. Madhu you have to be blind to think he doesn't want you.

Madhu: I thought too that maybe something...but he's been so weird lately. Last week when we went to that movie, he got super silent and even left early. He looked stressed and didn't eat but wouldn't even tell me why. I was so worried. Anyway I assumed it was because of his London deal, and he even called me from London on Wednesday, but then again yesterday...and then today he texted me saying he's not coming to pick me and will see me directly at the wedding. Maybe he's bringing a date or something...Oh God. Maybe I shouldn't go. If he brings a date, and I can't control myself and be normal, he will know, and then I'll cry and then I'll lose him (sits down)

Natasha: (makes her stand up) You're again jumping ahead of yourself. We'll deal with it when it happens, don't jump to conclusions. Besides, are you even listening to yourself. You're worried for him, you care for him, you miss him and you're jealous. You still think you don't love him.
Madhu: Oh Nuts. I am screwed right. I thought things would get clearer with time, but it seems like I'm drowning more and more. What should I do?
Natasha: Exactly what you told Rohan to do yesterday. Confess your feelings. And just like Trishna was swept away, RK will be swept away too.
Madhu: (smiling) How's she doing btw?
Natasha: Spectacular. She texted me 20 minutes back saying they're going for dinner. So when a lunch date stretches to dinner, you know it's a good first date.
Madhu: Yeah. I am so happy for her.
Natasha: Me too. It was nice of you to bring Rohan here.

Madhu: I didn't have a choice. Apparently he liked her since college, but he's always been so shy he never said anything. But that day, when Trish and I ran into him in the mall, I saw his eyes when he was looking at her. Anyway, once I found out, there was no way I was not letting Trish hear his truth from him. He needed a little push, so I rehearsed a script with him and brought him here.
Natasha: So now take your own advice, and stop fighting your feelings. Smile, and dazzle the hell out of Rishabh Kundra tonight. And tell him what you really feel. Whatever happens after that, we'll deal with it. OK? (Madhu nods) Ooh, I know just the earrings you should wear with this.

****************************************************************

RK: Madz.
Madhu: RK! Oh thank God! I was beginning to think you weren't going to come and maybe I should go back.
RK: No I was here. It just took me ten minutes to get from that corner of the hall to here once I saw you. And you know why? (staring at her face, then her plunging neckline, then her face again) You took my breathe away Madhubala Malik.
Madhu: (blushing) RK you just..
RK: (stepping closer, lighting letting their hands brush) You are looking gorgeous.
Madhu: You're looking really nice too.
RK: (stares into her eyes, then hears some people calling him) Did you meet the others from school? (Madhu nods) Come.

(after a while)

Madhu: They look wonderful, right.
RK: (staring at Madhu) What?
Madhu: Tanya and Abhay. They look so nice. Especially Tanya.
RK: Yeah. But you look great. What did you do Madz?
Madhu: (laughs) I didn't do anything. This is Natasha's dress. Though I have to say, it was fun when Chetna and Shreya didn't recognize me until you said my full name. Their eyes were...
RK: They're still dumb girls.
Madhu: Well, they were your girlfriends, so...
RK: I was an idiot back then with the worst taste possible, I've decided.
Madhu: Oh really. How about Tanya? You were crazy about her for months...until the farewell night...
RK: That (gets interrupted as Madhu's phone rings, sees the name on caller ID)
Madhu: Hi Rohan! Is everything ok? (pause) Oh roses. Pink. Yeah, definitely not red.(pause) No problem. (laughs) I am sure. Bye.
RK: That was...
Madhu: Rohan. He's really cute. Oh RK you should meet him. I'm sure you'd love him. He's so...
RK: You seem to like him?
Madhu: Of course. He's the nicest guy I've met.
RK: (jealous) But he doesn't know that you like pink roses, not red.
Madhu: Me? But he was asking what Trish liked. They're on their first date, and it sounds like it's going great. I finally managed to convince him yesterday to confess to Trish...I literally had to drag him to our house and make him practice a simple I love you like ten times.
RK: I love you.
Madhu: What?
RK: I mean, that was the script? I love you? You had to make him practice that?
Madhu: Yeah. He was so nervous! Took me one hour! But look at him today. All confident and spontaneous. Wants to surprise Trish tonight. (after a pause) Wait, when he called did you think, he called for me?
RK: Umm. Maybe.
Madhu: What?
RK: Well, you said you had someone very very special. You wouldn't tell me about him and you wouldn't show me your diary. And your eyes lit up when he called...
Madhu: Oh RK you're so funny. I'm not dating someone on the side without telling you.
RK: (holds her arm and then wraps around his elbow tight, then smiles) You better not! You're mine!
Madhu: (holds her breath, then looks at him and asks) What?
RK: Come with me. (drags Madhu out with him)

(outside)

Madhu: Where are we going?
RK: Away from the eyes of every man in the room who's staring at you.
Madhu: RK. What...(looking around, Marine drive visible from the roof) so you want to keep me hidden at this roof all evening.
RK: (making her face him, then caressing her cheek) If I have to.
Madhu: (shortening breathening) RK...
RK: You're so beautiful Madz.
Madhu: Stop lying.
RK: You know, I never did get to my target of 50 kisses in school?
Madhu: (questioningly) What?
RK: (staring into Madhu's eyes) Yeah. It was somehow left at 49.5. You robbed me of my last kiss Madz, by leaving it incomplete. (walks even closer) And by disappearing so I could never finish what we started. (holds Madhu's cheeks with his hands) Can I?
Madhu: Yes (leans in and places her lips on RK's, kissing him, closing her eyes)
RK: (moans, as the kiss deepens) Madz...(wraps her in his arms and lets the tongue dig deeper)
Madhu: (feels RK's hands crawl up to her bosom, caressing her hardened nipple) RK!! (pulls away) No...I can't (steps farther, then turns and runs away)

RK: (running behind) Madz...Madz...Madz...
Madhu: Go away RK.
RK: Madz what's going on. Why did you...listen...wait...at least tell me...wait.
Madhu: (runs outside the venue and sits in the waiting taxi) Andheri
RK: (to taxi driver) Nahi. Nobody's going anywhere (getting in the taxi from other end) Madz, what happened? Listen you can't run away. At least tell me. I am sorry if I...
Madhu: (exiting out of taxi and walking away) Nothing RK. I just need to go.
RK: (follows her, then finally catches her and stops her, moving to the side of the road) Madz stop. Sit here. You're not running anywhere like this. Oh God, Madz please stop crying. What happened? Listen if I hurt you I'm sorry...I...
Madhu: (Crying) I am not like them.
RK: Like whom?
Madhu: Like the girls you like. I am not like them. Even if I am wearing these clothes...or whatever...I am still that geeky sky girl you knew. I am not your type and I can't do that with you.
RK: Do what? And who's my type?
Madhu: I know your type. That Shreya...and Tanya...and...I'm not good enough.
RK: They're not my type. Even then, when I was a rank idiot, even then, I didn't know what my type was. You yourself said they were not my type. And those girls, they were just pretty at the surface and I was a 16 yr old horny teenage jerk. But they weren't good inside. They weren't you.
Madhu: But...

RK: Shut up and listen first. I know I was an idiot in school for not realizing what was what, but you were always special to me, weren't you. You were the only one who got me. You're the only one who I wanted to really be with. And those stupid girls...I wish I can go back in time and kick 16 yr old Rishabh for being such a fool, but honey...you know nothing with them ever meant anything. The only kiss that meant anything, the only girl...it was you. But I was too late to realize it. That night at our school farewell, I finally got to have a dance with Tanya, and all I was thinking about was running to you and telling you about it. And then, she started bitching about people, and then she started saying something stupid about you and I totally lost it. I yelled at her and ditched at her and stormed out. A few minutes later, you came out, and the ten minutes when I was dropping you home in the car, I was suddenly so happy and so much at peace. And then you kissed me. It felt so...different and real. I couldn't understand it then, and then you left...and then I couldn't find you again...but that feeling didn't ever leave me. And when I met you again on your birthday, when I saw you, the feeling came back to me. I've never felt so happy, so good about myself and so at peace with the world as I do with you. God, I love you so so much Madz.
Madhu: You do?
RK: Yes. Of course yes. Can't you see it.
Madhu: But you didn't say anything...
RK: I tried. But I was ashamed. Of how I used to be, and then I realized how awesome you are and I felt I wasn't good enough for you. And then I thought maybe you like someone else. I have been so nervous, and you know how I get when I get nervous. This is the most important thing of my life. You, you Madz are the most important and the best thing that's ever happened to me.
Madhu: But why didn't you say something today
RK: Oh I was going to. But you looking like this, you knocked my socks off! I mean I took you to the roof to tell you how much I loved you, but then I looked into your eyes and I lost it. All I wanted to do was kiss you. I am sorry. I am so so sorry Madz I did not want to hurt you ever. I don't even know what I did...
Madhu: No. It was me. I am sorry. I just...all those girls you used to make out with...and then come back and boast about getting to second base...it just came back to me suddenly and I didn't (chokes) I didn't want to be one of those girls.
RK: (guiltily looks away) I...I am so sorry...
Madhu: (stands and makes him look at her) No it's ok. It's all in the past. The problem is, whenever I look at you, I become the 14 year old Madhu again who was crazy lovesick for Rishabh Kundra.
RK: What? You...
Madhu: Loved you. Love you. Always have. From years before we even ever talked. And with time, it's only become deeper and deeper, sucking me in.
RK: Madz, you really...
Madhu: (smiles) Yes. I love you RK.(hugs him)
RK: I love you too. (bends forward and kisses Madhu)

**************************************************************************

(two years later)
Trishna: Hi Rishabh.
RK: Trish? At this hour? Are you fine? Is everything ok? Is Madz...
Trishna: Relax...relax...everything's fine.
RK: You are at the Bachelorette party, right?
Trishna: Yes. And everyone's here. I'm just calling to warn you that your would-be-in-five-days wife has totally lost it and is most likely going to end up in bed with Natasha tonight, naked, who apparently has a free pass from her husband for tonight.
RK: What? How can Vishal? And Madz...I'm coming there.

(ten minutes later)

RK: (barging in the club) Madz
Madhu: I am going to strip for you Nutsss...
RK: (runs in towards her) Madz. What's going on? Oh God Madhu, didn't I tell you not to drink so much?
Madhu: But it's my bachelorette. It's my special day. And I want to have hawwttt sexxx.
Natasha: Yeah, baby. Let's do it.
RK: Sorry Nuts. This is exclusively my department. (smiles and picks Madhu up on her shoulder like a cowboy) Bye girls. Enjoy your night.
Madhu: But I want hot sex...right now.
RK: Yes baby.

*****************************************************************************

(five days later, after the wedding)

RK: So how are you feeling Mrs Madhubala Rishabh Kundra?
Madhu: Good. But I'm not changing my name after marriage.
RK: That's ok. You can keep your name. But I can still call you Mrs Kundra in private right.
Madhu: Nope, you can only call me Madz. My sexy, sweet, innocent wife Madz.
RK: Innocent. Yeah right. (RK grins) That reminds me, I have a present for you.
Madhu: Present? Now? But the function's not over. Everyone's eating.
RK: Yep. Now. Don't worry, it's only one of your special presents you're going to get tonight (winks)

RK: (stands up and grabs the microphone, asking the DJ to turn down the music) Ladies and Gentleman! Thank you for coming to our special day and blessing us. I'd say that today is the happiest day of my life, but that's not true. The truth is, with Madhu, each new day of my life is better and happier than anything I've lived before and that's why I'm sure that I'd be even happier tomorrow than I am right now. And for all this happiness, I really wanted to find a way to thank Madhu for coming in my life. My Madhu, her words have magic, and the little she's shown me of her writing over the years...I'm blown away each time. In fact, the first time I read some of her poems I can't even understand them (laughs). Well, she was always the smarter one and I'm the one who takes time to understand things. And each time I manage to understand the depth of her words, I'm blown away at the innocence, the purity and the passion of her soul.
So dear wifey, as a thank you, I have a few words too, even though they're no way as good as yours:

Main Shayar to Nahi
Magar ae haseen
Jab bhi teri aankhon mein jhaankta hoon
Gazal khud-b-khud likhi jati hai
Tere aane se mehekti hai zindagi
Tere jaane se saans theher jaati hai
Jeene ki aarzoo teri muskaan mein hai
Marne ka bahaana bhi hai wahi kahin
Main shayar to nahi
Magar ae haseen
Woh lafz jo keh sakein tum kya ho
Kisi shayar ke paas nahi

Author's notes

[Part 1; 08/11]
Hi everyone! Don't ask me why I wrote this one. I just did. It's supposed to be a short story - only four parts, so will finish it over the weekend. Not sure if you'd like the story though, so anyway don't want to make it longer.
It's also supposed to be different from what (and how) I usually write here. Different writing style, dialogues-only. And some poetry.
Kya karein, aaj mijaaz kuch us tarah ke hain!
Hope you like it!
-Teekay.

[Part 2; 08/11]
Yep..I'm back already with the second part. As I said, want to finish this one quickly, before I forget and lose the inspiration 😛
Enjoy the poetic detours!

[Part 3; 09/11]
Part 3 is now up too. Only one to go. Writing this is fun.

[Part 4; 13/11]
And...done.
Phew. That was LONG. Much longer than I thought it would be. But seriously, words kept writing themselves. I considered breaking it into two and posting five shots instead of four, but it would be messy and I thought, what the hell - you guys can read a long chapter, right?😳😳

Anyway, the story is done. And I had tons of fun writing it. I loved all the characters in the story too.

Thank you for those who've read. I'd really appreciate feedback. Cheers!
