Part 2
"Thank you so much for what you did for us," Madhu begin, "actually thank you isn't nearly enough."
"How did you come to know about me? You are far too young to be a fan," RK asked.
"Your case has been in the news off and on for nearly 20 years. It was one of my case studies when I was in law school. I continued with my research and investigation until very recently when I had all the pieces of the puzzle," AK explained.
"Your parents must be very proud of you," Madhu smiled as she served him.
"I didn't know my mother. She died when I was very young, my Dadi raised me," AK informed.
"And what about your father?" RK questioned.
AK rolled up his bhindi sabzi in his roti to eat it; a very peculiar thing to do. So it was no surprise when it obviously caught both RK and Madhu's attention.
"That's an odd way to eat roti and sabzi," RK stated with amusement clear in his voice.
Madhu on the other hand wasn't surprised but more puzzled by his behavior, "What does AK stand for?" she inquired.
RK gave her a strange look, like where did that come from?
"Aryan Kundra" AK stated.
At that moment the confusion was transferred from RK's face to Madhu's.
"You are Sultan's son," RK states. That statement only made Madhu even more confused, Sultan's son, Aryan and the bhindi roll add up but where does this Kundra name fall into place.
Sensing Madhu's confusion, Aryan explains, "After Sultan's death when Mr. Kundra enrolled me into a school and set up the help needed for Dadi to get well, he gave me his name too. Sultan didn't have a name and using his would only bring problems into my life. So during the formalities for the admission, he gave me the family name. He took care of all the requirements so all of my official records reflected the change, that's how I became Aryan Kundra."
Madhu looks at RK in shock and with pride. She had no idea he had done all this, he never mentioned it. She knew he did what he could after Sultan died for Meera and Aryan but she never knew this small gesture he made to save a child's life and protected his future.
"My father was in the same situation I was when he was my age; alone, abandoned with no hope for the future. He took that as an opportunity to lash out at the world, to justify becoming the man he chose to become. He believed he was helping those in similar situation as him but he was only helping spread violence and death. I was in the same spot but I decided to work hard. I too wanted to help people in my situation but I chose to do it using the law rather than going against it. I can do what he thought he was doing but there won't various states' or country's police departments looking for me or the need for me to look over my shoulder constantly. He never thought of the blood on his hands because he blamed his past. As he helped those like him, he still took away sons from their mothers, husbands from their wives, brothers from their sisters. I took what Mr. Kundra gave me and luckily I was able to use that to repay a small percentage of the debt I owe by helping him with his case," Aryan told his tale.
"I never knew the vile man he had become, the things he put you both through. The prize he wanted and the lengths he went to gain it, disgusts me. I'm sorry for what my father did to both of you. I didn't know the extent of the damage and pain he inflicted upon this family. I only learned of his actions when I was researching the case. He not only threatened your life but carried out those threats so Mrs. Kundra would leave you for him. It is sad he never knew from the moment she came into our lives, she was never ours," Aryan finished his head bowed in shame.
"No son should have to pay for the sins of his father," RK said sincerely.
Aryan smiled a sad smile as he spoke, "I wish my father knew that. What your father did, you were not part of it? You were just as innocent as my father was, as I was. You should have never had to pay for the mistakes of your father which you yourself had no knowledge of nor the control to change the outcome."
"Trust me it is a hard lesson to learn. It took me many tries before I learned it. Thankfully, I have some great people in my life who point me in the right direction when needed, which is often. You had no hand in what your father put me and my family through, you were a child yourself. I realized you shouldn't be punished because he was your father. We don't choose who our parents are," explains RK.
Madhu looks at these two men in front of her in complete amazement. Shouldn't they hate each other? RK killed Sultan, granted it was self defense but Aryan held no animosity for the man who killed his father. And RK, he was so jealous of Aryan back in those days from ages ago. She remembers vividly that even with everything that had happened between them, RK refused to share her with anyone even if it was a young child. But here today nearly 20 plus years later, they both understand each other and their situations. RK and Aryan were in similar situations but what RK's father did was used against him to hurt him where as RK chose to separate the crimes of the father and not punish the son.
"So what did you do to get this all cleared up? I mean about my identity. Biwi has been trying for 20 years. Everyone knew it but the courts never seem to take the evidence that was presented to them," RK inquired.
"There was always a hand at play in your case from the beginning. A pupetter pulling the strings. KRK didn't disappear with the money; he was made to disappear. When Mrs. Kundra caught "you" with his mother; she was actually being held hostage by Bhujang. He was using KRK's mother as leverage to make him do everything. Bhujang came to know about your plan to capture him while the police "helped" Mr. Kundra escape from prison. There was someone in this household feeding him information. Bhujang was calling the shots from his lair. As your family gathered proof to prove your identity; he bribed, threatened, and killed the judges, lawyers and police to prevent any evidence from being admitted in court. KRK wanted to come back but he feared for his and his mother's life. Bhujang had told him if he can get to her once, he can surely get to her again, at anytime, at any place. KRK and his mother had been hiding until very recently. My first goal was to get in touch with Bhujang, find him and bring him in front of the police. The hardest part of all that was the initial contact; how do I get in touch with him? Using some of my contacts in the prison system; we fed one of his man on the inside info which we knew would reach him. It didn't take long after that before things started moving; by the week's end I received a message to meet Bhujang. It took a few meetings and some proof before he was ready to believe who I said I was and why I was back. In his thirst for revenge, he easily bought how I was willing to do anything to destroy the man who killed my father. After that it was easy to get the information out of him regarding everything he had done to keep you in jail and KRK away from Mumbai. My next step was to meet KRK but finding him was a big challenge; that took few months. When I did locate KRK, for obvious reasons he was unwilling to come out in the open, he still received constant threats from Bhujang. He had kept up with Mr. Kundra's case and all the setbacks; he mentioned he even sent proof to the appropriate authorities but I believe Bhujang intercepted those as well. As much as I hated putting KRK and his mother's life in danger, I needed to put Bhujang and KRK in front of each other. One day I called Bhujang and KRK to the same place to meet, the video recorder was set; all I needed to do was light the match so Bhujang would spill everything about his hand in this house of cards. The moment Bhujang threatened KRK's mother, the dam burst; KRK threatened back with all he knew about Bhujang and his business. Of course, Bhujang was a gangster how dare someone like KRK out do him? He gloated about all of his accomplishments in the underworld especially about keeping you behind bars for 20 years. After that day everything fell into place. I handed the video recording over to the people I trusted in the police force and the judicial system. Bhujang was arrested five days ago. KRK was indicted but for his testimony against Bhujang and the fact he too was a victim; he was released yesterday. By noon yesterday I had the police commissioner standing in front of a judge to grant your release immediately. After this major screw up from both the Mumbai Police Force and the judicial system neither could refuse any of my demands. Your release was granted within the hour even though nothing had been presented to prove your identity. Unfortunately, the processing took longer than expected else you would have been released yesterday evening."
RK and Madhu sat their stunned as Aryan finished recollecting the events that led them to today.
"Who was helping Bhujang from this house?" Madhu asked as she sat trying to process all of the information.
"It was your step father-in-law, Khulbhusan Bhtia aka Kuku Bhatia. Sadly nothing can be done about him, he was arrested about 10 years back in a beer bar raid and died a prison altercation," informed Aryan.
RK and Madhu sat stunned at the new information they had just learned. A family member, even if he hated them, neither thought that Kukuji would stoop this low.
"So it's all over? It's finally all over?" Madhu spoke barely audible still unable to believe the reality.
"Yes, Mrs. Kundra. It is finally over. There is a press conference tomorrow following a quick court appearance for the sake of formality. The press conference will be held by Mumbai Chief of Police and Mumbai Supreme Court judge and the Inspector General of Prisons. If either of you like you can address the media but it's not necessary," explained Aryan.
Madhu seemed to have found her voice as she asked Aryan about his personal life, what had he been up to since she last saw him.
"Kaka died a few years after we left Mumbai but by then Dadi was nearly fully functional again. She raised me like she never got to raise her own son. She worked some odd jobs to run the house because my education and her treatment were paid for until neither were needed by us. I graduated the top of my university then joined law school. I got married about 2 years ago. Her name is Preity. We are expecting our first child soon; she is 7 months pregnant so as soon as I wrap this up tomorrow I will be flying back to Delhi. At the moment Dadi is taking care of her and she is driving Dadi up the wall or Dadi is driving her mad depending on whom you ask," Aryan finished with a chuckle.
"I'm happy for you. We both are," Madhu said as she slipped her hand into RK's and he squeezed her hand in return. Neither men missed the disappearance of her smile at the mention of the baby.
The following morning bought on a buzz of activity and a ton of nervous energy at RK Mansion. They all knew the court hearing today was just a formality but they had all been disappointed one too many times that the reality hadn't quiet sunk in yet. A few short hours later, they were standing on the steps of the Supreme Court, awaiting the start of the press conference. At podium stood the Director General of Police, flanked by the Chief Justice of Supreme Court and Inspector General of Prisons. Behind them stood RK, his wife Madhubala, his mother Radha, his manager and friend, Bittuji and RK's lawyer AK.
"It is with great pride that I stand before you today to celebrate the freedom of a man loved by us all. But it is also with a heavy heart that I stand before because I as DGP, have failed him, my police force has failed him. An innocent man spent 20 years of his life behind bars because my police force is corrupted, our judicial system is corrupted. Every aspect of our system that is build to protect our citizens, protect the innocent failed him. There is nothing that I can say that will be enough of a repayment for the time Mr. Kundra has lost, the time his family has lost; the opportunities that have been lost, the life moments that have been missed forever. But today I vow to do better, to look harder, to believe that sometimes even with all the evidence stacked against someone they could be innocent. My sincerest apologies to Mr. Kundra, Mrs. Kundra, and Mrs. Bhatia; I'm very sorry for what you all went through these last 20 years," concluded Director General of Police.
The Director General of Police shook hands with RK then stepped aside for the Chief Justice to make a brief statement.
"There is nothing that can be said that will tip the scale in my favor. Our judicial system failed Mr. Kundra from the beginning. From the beginning he claimed his innocence and his identity yet even with proof; we didn't believe him. We only saw the tainted version that was presented before us. The scales of justice were tipping in the favor of those pulling the strings. Mr. Kundra could have easily done the same but his belief that our judicial system will prevail, cost him time that can't be returned. The blind fold on Lady Justice is to prevent her from being biased but the blind fold needs to be removed for the innocent people who are suffering because of the miscarriage of justice. I know promising that a story like yours won't be repeated is futile but we as a society must demand the change from our leaders. We must acknowledge the cracks and flaws in our entire structure so that we can begin to repair them. I wish Mr. Kundra and his family that they are surrounded by all the goodness in the world so they too can begin to heal," concluded the Chief Justice.
The Chief Justice shook RK and Madhu's hand as did the Inspector General of Police. The man stepped aside as RK took the podium. He pulled Madhu to his right and his mother to his left then asked Bittuji and AK to join them. Bittuji took his place next to Radhaji and AK stood besides Madhu.
"I want to thank you all for finally setting me free. I hold no animosity towards these great men behind me who carry a heavy burden. There were too many hands at play that it would have been impossible not to form the conclusion everyone formed for many years. I want to thank my family for never giving up hope. My wife, who refused to give up fighting till I was home safe; my mother, whose prayers were finally answered; my friend my brother Bittuji whose relentless pursuit of finding me justice is only second to his love for me. And an angel I didn't know I had my lawyer who found a way to bring the entire truth to light. I thank all of them because without them I wouldn't be standing here before you. I want to also thank my fans who never gave up hope; their prayers, letters and cards helped me through the darkest days. I do have a request that please give me and my family some time; we need to heal, to be a family again. Thank you all," RK finished as tears freely flowed from his wife and mother's eyes.
It was time for time to take a pause; the time had come for healing to begin. It was time for broken pieces and broken lives to be reassembled and be whole again.
Later that night when RK and Madhu retired to their room for the night; silence echoed in the room. It hadn't been their room in 20 years yet it was exactly the way he remembered down to the pen holder on the desk. The only thing that was new was the blanket and pillow on the floor by the foot of the bed. Madhu's 20 years old secret had finally been caught by the one person whom she never wanted to learn the truth.
"You have been sleeping on the floor for 20 years," RK stated more than asked.
Madhu shook her head in the negative, trying to lie.
"You never could lie to me Biwi, even when you hated me. All this! Just because I wasn't sleeping on a comfortable bed?" RK asked walking closer to Madhu.
The tears and the pain that Madhu had kept in for 20 years finally broke as she buried herself in her husband's chest, sobs escaping her.
RK held her tight, held on to her because it was so good to hold her after so many years and because they both needed these tears to wash away the pain so they can began living again not just existing.
Later when they were both lying in bed, Madhu's head on RK's chest while he held her close to him, sleep the farthest thing on their mind.
"We can't tell Ma about Kukuji. Her focus these past years has only been you; she won't be able to deal with the fact he tried to destroy you," Madhu spoke solemnly.
"Hmmm," RK said.
"How did we get to this point RK? Were we not nice people that God has punished us like this? Weren't we kind to those around us? Why was the happiness of our home so short-lived? Why didn't we get the chance to fulfill the dreams we had weaved? What about our perfect home and our kids? Why is it always us, RK? Why?" Madhu asked RK and may be the universe for answers as tears flooded her eyes yet again.
"I don't know, Madhu. I just don't know. I'm a Kameena. I won't deny that. I have done things to you, hurt you in ways that I should be punished but my mother and you are innocent. I know my ego is the cause but I thought you evened out the bad in me with your goodness. I don't know why we can't be happy for long before the next disaster comes to turn our lives upside down. I don't know for what sins we are being punished. May be God knows we are strong and even stronger together that we can fight and survive. May be God knows our love is strong enough to survive anything," RK spoke solemnly.
"I know I'm being selfish when I say this but when do we get our happily ever after? When do we get the fruits of our labor? I have begged Bappa for you and for our happy life, when do we get the reward for our suffering?" Madhu said as her anger rose.
"Biwi, I have already gotten my reward. I have you and for me that's enough. The rest would have been icing on the cake but after everything, I have learned to be happy with who I have not what I have. I know we both wanted a family but may be it wasn't meant to be, who know what's in store for us now," RK spoke with a smile.
Madhu wipes her tears as she spoke, "I think you are right. I have you and the rest will happen when and if it happens. I'm going to enjoy having my husband back next to me. As for family, we already are a family; you, me, Ma and Bittuji. Now we have a guardian angel looking over us as well."
"We should go and visit Aryan and his family in Delhi soon, after all whether I liked it or not he was, is family," stated RK.
"I still can't believe you gave him your name, RK. I don't know what made you but it made his life. You broke the cycle of hate your father started and Sultan continued. You choose to see Aryan as a person rather than a product of his father. That small act of kindness changed his world. I will forever be grateful to him because if it weren't for him, you wouldn't be here today," Madhu said as tears welled in eyes.
"We aren't born evil. The world around us and our choices make us the devil we become. Aryan was innocent, his father chose to be the devil but he chose to be an angel sired by the devil himself," RK explained.
As they lay in bed talking about everything and nothing, just pleased to be by each others' side once again. The long dark night for RK and Madhu had finally passed, the sun was finally shining on them and time had once again begun moving again. Time surely does bring different tides with it, this time the Kundra family hoped it will bring only tidal waves of happiness.
The End
