MEMORY
Madhu had understood the reason behind her husband's weird behavior in the last dreadful days of her life. She knew why RK was finding everything in his life so bitter. She knew he was growing jealous and insecure. Everybody knew it well that RK's career was on a steep decline and hers on rise. His health was not going on in his favor, not to forget the partial paralysis he had to suffer though it had recovered a few days back. In spite of all these, Madhu knew that her RK still loved her dearly. But he could no longer remain happy in her love. She knew that it was she and only she who was proving to be the barrier between his happiness. She knew she had to leave him and let him live on his own. A divorce would be useless that she knew well. Also, she could not bear to live without him. She made her final decision.
She left him...she went to a place from where there is no coming back, leaving no notes behind...
TWO DAYS AFTER HER DEATH...
It is another new day. The sun shines brightly above in the sky, trying to fill its rays with hopes and happiness as it scatters them on Mumbai, the City of Fame. It pours its rays into every home through every open window.
Rishabh Kundra wakes with a start and sits up on his bed. He feels the tear that is rolling down his left cheek and knows he was dreaming of her again. He takes a few deep, labored breaths to steady himself. He looks at the wall clock. It is seven in the morning.
He stands up from his bed and looks at his image in the mirror just beside him. Dark circles are beginning to form under his eyes. He realizes he had forgotten to change into his night cloths. He doesn't remember when he had fallen asleep last night. All he can recall is him staring blankly at the ceiling above his bed. He gets freshened up.
After a while, Bittuji enters the room and sees that RK is busy wearing his watch.
"Chief, Mehul Sir has come to meet you. He is waiting in the living area."
Keep him waiting was what RK wanted to say but instead, "I'll be there."
Mehul Chopra sits on the sofa in the hall. He looks at his watch.
He hasn't got over his talent to keep people waiting. He thinks.
Just then RK descends down the stairs and to the hall. He says a formal "good morning" to his guest and takes his seat opposite him.
Chopra suddenly finds himself in a fix. He hadn't really prepared for this. He doesn't know how to begin. RK keeps his patient gaze on him.
"So...are you coming for shooting tomorrow?" He finally manages to say a part of his entire conversation.
"No."
"Come on RK, this one's your second home production.""
"I think you've forgotten that we have no heroine now. I don't want any audition."
"Okay. If you want, I can make changes in the script""
"I had already told you yesterday that this movie is cancelled." RK replies sternly.
Chopra sighs, "I'm really sorry for what has happened. It's not only your loss, but also mine and everyone's. The entire industry's'."
"Was that all?" RK says, "Thank you. I appreciate your coming. You may leave." He points decently at the door.
This is where Chopra gets his chance. "Look. I don't like you that much but""
"Same pinch," RK interjects, "I don't like myself too nowadays." He looks down at the ground for some reason.
Chopra pretends to ignore, "I'm not here to grieve with you on your losses. For humanity's sake I feel sorry for you." RK raises an eyebrow at that but doesn't look up at the speaker. Chopra takes out an envelope from his jacket pocket and places it on the table.
"On that day itself," Chopra continues on a softer note, "Madhu had come to meet me. She gave me this and requested me to give it to you when I feel the time is right. I asked her how I would know about the right time. She just said that I would know. She felt that I would more understand in this case than all the others, even more than your own mother. I hadn't got anything whatever she had said until..." He trails off. He notices that RK is now looking at the white envelope on the table.
Chopra pushes it towards him, "Probably she knew that I won't be drowned in any emotion""
"Leave." RK says.
"RK""
"I said leave!" RK now looks up straight at Mehul and says loudly this time. Chopra opens his mouth to speak but the look in his host's eyes prevents him to say anything further.
RK walks into his room and slams the door locked behind him. He sits on the couch in his bedroom, the envelope in his hand. He looks at it properly for the first time. On the top, his name is written in block letters in a handwriting he well knows. He opens it and finds a letter. He reads on without any further thoughts crossing his mind...
Dear Rishabh,
Before you wonder anything, I want to say that please don't misunderstand me. I know you were doing that.
Believe me. I did not do this to get rid of my life. I just wanted you to stay happy. It's weird to think of your satisfaction considering the circumstances you are in, but I don't think there were any other ways left. You considered me your life, but I'm hell sure I was not appropriate for you. You considered me your lucky charm'. But I wasn't. I did everything that was possible for you. Yet those weren't enough. I was your only piece of bad luck, my stars striving to steal your life.
Move on. Head for your life's biggest dream, your destination.
Please forgive me if possible. This was not for me. This I did was for you. Because I love you...

Both the paper and the envelope slip away from his hands and drift on the floor. He stares at them with disbelief. He can feel the fresh stream of tear that wells up in his eyes and spills over.
Then, she was with him...
She laughed with him, cried with him...
She held his hand and fought with him...
She loved him, cared for him...
Now, she is nowhere...she is nothing...
Just a memory...a fading memory in his frozen heart...
