CHAPTER 3- Battle Lines
Part 1
August 2008, Motihari
Dear Rishabh
My second letter to you and within a week of the first one! You should be proud of me. Even if you aren't, I am. And since you can't see, let me tell you I am sticking my tongue out
First things first. I saw your movie! (Yes I'm squealing)
It was the first time I've been inside a theatre and even though we couldn't afford the balcony and had to sit in the pit, I was so excited. Rajiv and Mukund had to scold me to get me to calm down. The scolding didn't work too. Anyways sirji, what an entry! I jumped up on the seat along with everyone else and whistled as loudly as I could. That, kind of shut the audience up for a moment but then they followed my suit. Yours truly, Ms Jungli Billi , always sets a precedent. I enjoyed every part of it except for the scenes between you and the heroine. How come you had such a milk and water miss to act opposite you? I didn't like her at all
School has started again. A couple of villagers came to inform Ma that I shouldn't be going to school anymore because I'm married but Roma chased them out with the kitchen broom. Arrey Ha! You don't know about Roma. Roma is our nanny. She used to work in films too as a junior artist. Do you know what that is? Either ways Roma is short and crazy (in a very nice way). That's all you need to know about her
Where was I? Oh yes, school. I have been going to school since 12 years and I still haven't decided whether I like school or not. Some parts of it are lovely. I love Hindi and History. In fact I want to be a History teacher. But some parts like Maths and the new English class that has started are horrible. What about you?
I am going to ignore the fact that you haven't replied to my first letter and giving you a chance to reply now. You have one weeks' time to write a reply answering all of my questions and giving me your news. Till then
Yours
Madhu
P.S- You will write, won't you?

Mumbai, Present Day
The brunette leaned up and whispered her room number into his ear before sashaying away to join the crowd. He winked at her and turned. The smirk on his face disappeared and his face relaxed back into its usual expression of arrogant boredom
Was picking up a woman supposed to be this easy? He hadn't spent 5 minutes her before she had invited him over to her place for drinks. He sighed. Either he had gotten really good at this or women nowadays were an easy mark. He could remember a time when he had enjoyed this, the thrill of the chase, the games, the uncertainty, the feeling of victory, but now...Now it just palled on him. Like everything else in his life. He sighed again
Bittuji looked up, watching his Chief approach him. He frowned. Lately RK had seemed distracted and off his game. Nothing interested him anymore. Bittuji could remember a time when RK was just a rising star, when everything was different. The two of them had done it all. From coming up with devious ideas to rise to the top of the ladder and consolidate their position to travelling to exotic places at the blink of an eye, chasing after even more exotic women, gambling, partying, they had done it all. There had been a zest for life in that RK, a craving to experience things in all forms and shapes. And now, when he was Superstar RK, the undisputed king of the industry, he seemed uninterested in almost everything except his career. When he was not acting, he was bored
Bittuji swallowed down his fears and forced a bright smile onto his face"Chief" he said with false heartiness
RK looked at him a faint smile of genuine amusement crossing his face "Why so chipper Bittuji? Anyone of the dozen society hags here slip you their number?" he asked, the sarcasm tempered with affection
Bittuji smiled at that and shook his head "You know me Chief, I prefer not to get entangled with the ladies"
"Brilliant decision, Bittuji. Especially with women who host parties like these. This one actually had the poor taste to pair pink flowers with a green carpet. Horror!" he shuddered theatrically
Bittuji laughed. RK continued "Moreover these so called jewels of society aren't worth the trouble. I was just invited over by a stunning brunette with even more stunning assets who will almost certainly bore me to tears within 10 minutes of conversation. Come to think of it, she already has. Tell me Bittuji, don't you get sick of all these!" the last words came out with a violence which startled his faithful secretary
Perplexed and worried, Bittuji fumbled for words. Fortunately he didn't have to find any. A voice came from behind interrupting their conversation and causing his Chief to stiffen. Praying that it wasn't who he thought he was Bittuji turned. It was.
"Good evening gentleman, mind if I join you?" A tall silver haired man in his 60s stood behind them smiling; a glass of champagne in his hands. His quietly expensive suit was in sharp contrast to RK's more flamboyant style
Bittuji smiled weakly. RK said nothing, his face expressionless. The man stepped forward and turned to Bittuji , saying with a charming smile " Bittuji, I believe my friend Mr.Mehta wanted to see you. Apparently he wants you to recommend a restaurant for him to hold his company's annual banquet in. It is well known that you are an authority in these matters" he finished, the smile not leaving his face
Bittuji cast a helpless look at RK before hurrying away, not wanting to be present at the inevitable explosion
The man stepped forward. "Hello Rishabh" he said. "I have been meaning to talk to you for quite some time"
"Get lost" was the only reply he got. The smile on his face slipped a little. Stepping closer, he said in a voice of determined lightness
"Avoid me all you can Rishabh, it doesn't change the fact that you are my son and I, your father. Nothing can change that"
RK finally turned. Voice and face devoid of emotion, he looked at the man standing in front of him, full in the face. Speaking clearly and slowly he said" Let me say this once and for all. The only relationship you and I share, Mr.Mohan Bhatiya, is the relationship between a kangaroo and a penguin. Which is to say, none at all. My name is Rishabh Kundra and you are currently disturbing me. Leave"
Mohan Bhatiya's jaw tensed as he watched his son turn his back to him. He reminded himself of what was at stake, swallowed his pride and tried again
"Very well then, I won't waste my time with pleasantries. I have come to speak to you on a matter of business" he bit the words out. Apart from a raised eyebrow there was no sign that RK had heard his words
"As you have probably heard Bhatiya group of companies is currently facing threat of a hostile takeover. Now, I am planning to retain control of my company by buying out majority of the shares. But for that I need..."
He suddenly found himself slammed up against the wall by his collar. Choking in outrage and fear, he stared down into the furious eyes of his son, his face contorted with rage
"But for that, you need my 40% shares which my mother bequeathed me in her will right before you killed her" RK spat out, his hold tightening, eyes glinting fire
Mohan Bhatiya struggled to breathe. They were in one of the more deserted corners of the ballroom and the chances that one among the buzzing crowd would notice them were slim. His vision blurred and he pushed ineffectively at his captor who suddenly dropped him to the floor
Struggling to his feet, he leaned against the wall, wheezing. All traces of charm had disappeared and his face bore an ugly expression. Glaring murderously at his son he said "I need the 40% shares my dear wife left you before she died in a tragic accident" he spat out
RK had returned back to looking bored. For all the emotion he showed, the past few seconds had never happened. His mouth curled imperceptibly
In a tone which might have been used to chastise a child, he said" I believe I have given you too much credit for intelligence Mr.Bhatiya. We both know, what you just proposed is never going to happen" He turned to leave
His face dark, the elder man hissed out "Very well. Have it your way. But keep in mind, the stake in the company isn't the only thing your mother left you"
RK stopped. His voice neutral, he asked "What do you mean?"
Smiling unpleasantly, Mohan Bhatiya dusted himself off and savoured the rare moment of victory. "It means it's time for you to pay a visit to your grandmother" he said sweetly and walked away
"Chief!" Bittuji hurried up, knowing instinctively that something had gone wrong. RK was staring into the distance, his brow furrowed in thought, eyes confused. With a start, he looked at Bittuji and said
"Don't look so worried, Bittuji. Barring a few moments where I nearly strangled Mr.Bhatiya to death, our conversation was extremely amicable" he said, ignoring Bittuji's gasp." We, however have somewhere to go to"
