When he entered the scene, it was the moment to cherish for. It was the entry which marked the beginning of an interesting turn of events in Madhubala's life. It was the entry of a guy we all were waiting for. Sultan-the fearless don of the underworld.
I find it sometimes startling how can I appreciate a man and his words whose profession I cannot condone. Being a don,it is unthinkable that his character will be liked and even praised. That brings up the question what is it that we look for in individuals? Is it the socially acceptable, respectable profession, or a genuineness of a person, what he really is. There is the conflict and there lies the answer.
Sultan comes across as a person who with his steely exterior still nurses a kind heart. He loves his differently abled son and the old faithful caretaker. He can go to any extent to protect his little world. When I saw Aryan as the bait, It took me some time to digest the fact a father can use his son to lure his enemies out of their hiding places and settle score with them. To me it was terrifying. But, the son had unflinching faith on his father's capability so much so that he tried to prevent Madhu from rescuing him. And that particular incident also showed the bond that the father and the son shared with each other.
Many times I have concurred with Madhu the way he treats his son or the rigorous regimented life that he has forced his son to lead. But, there is a reason for this also. He is no normal kid of a normal parent. Sultan's own life is full of uncertainties. He ,therefore, prepares his son to accept any eventuality. And also trains him to lead a life without him.
He is being introduced as a don with a difference. He is no conventional don and that makes his character all the more interesting. He knows the difference between good and bad . He knows how far he will go, what he will accept and what he will not. He does not want any of his gang members to trade in things that destroys the young. And to prevent them from doing so,he can risk his own life and still set things right. He is extra careful that no one suffers because of him and no one pays the price for being good to him and his family.
Whenever we come across the people of the underworld, we always have a preconceived notion about what they are and to what level they can stoop to have their demands met. But, Sultan comes across as some one who is refreshingly different.
Sultan and Madhu's relation is not based on love but on trust. Though he is extra careful about his food and shelter, he trusts Madhu with his son. And the son acts as the delicate link between the two. Even if,hesitatingly ,Sultan shared about his wife . it seems the relationship ended with her betrayal, the reason not known. That makes Madhu and Sultan sharing an invisible bond of being betrayed by the people they loved the most. And that may in future draw them closer together.
Sultan has the ruthlessness, the brutality, the cynicism of a don,but he also has the sensitiveness, the compassionate attitude and the reliability of a gentleman. Those who know him, know him for what he is. Many have seen only one side of his powerful yet layered character and it is only Madhu who has unearthed what lies below the tough exterior .
His is a very interesting yet complex character and the actor has done full justice to it. It is when Sultan appears, I feel the episode is complete.
