Chapter One - The Senses
I opened my eyes slowly with great effort. I saw darkness around me and blinked my eyes to make sure they were open. I remembered back to being dragged away and instantly I felt the urge to scream. But nothing came out. No noise, nothing. It was then that I realized my mouth had been taped shut; my heart began to race out of terror.
A fear of the dark was something I had since I was a little girl, so being surrounded by darkness caused my pulse to increase as well. I decided to close my eyes tight. Then I tried to move my hands to un-tape my mouth but I couldn't move them. I felt my hands restrained behind my back and struggled to get free unsuccessfully. I tried to scream again but all I could hear was the muffled sound of my own voice behind the tape. I turned myself onto my stomach and got up on my knees. I felt the soft sheets on my legs and the cushiony feeling beneath me. I figured I was on a bed. An instant fear took place in my mind. I tried to remember back to what had happened after my eyes had closed but nothing came to mind. All I could do by that time was only hope that whoever had kidnapped me had not done something monstrous to me. I breathed in and out of my nose slowly to calm my nerves. Then I thought deeply about my body and realized I didn't feel any pain. I didn't even feel as much as a bruise. I wondered why someone would kidnap me and then leave me without even raising a single hand on me. I felt myself heating up with fear as sweat began forming on my body. I felt my body attempting to shake but the restraint on my arms prevented it. I began to use my knees to feel the soft cushion beneath me better to be sure that I was on a bed.
While I got lost in thought and tried to use my senses to figure out where I was, I heard a light voice speaking from afar. I froze. I blocked out everything in my mind and put all my focus onto my ears to listen to what was being said.
"You did a great job today! I didn't think you had it in you. No. Don't worry. I did what you asked. Nope. No lights. Haven't heard a sound yet. When will you be home bro? Alright, see you then."
I only heard one side of a conversation and figured he was talking on the phone to his brother. It wasn't the same voice I had heard when I was being kidnapped, so I came to the conclusion that the man, outside the room I was in, was not the man who had kidnapped me. As I thought about the voice, I forgot that I had been using my knees to feel whatever I had been placed on. It was a bit too late when I remembered because suddenly I hit a hard wooded floor, face first. I grimaced in pain and once again tried to scream but it was of no use. I felt a tear run down my face and then felt something flowing out of my nose. I couldn't move my hands and so I laid on the ground while writhing in pain. My nose stung and I knew the liquid flowing out of my nose was blood. I couldn't tell how much time had passed when I managed to block out the pain and calm my nerves again. I laid on the ground and closed my eyes, hoping to fall asleep and wake up back in the orphanage that I had come from. Yes, an orphanage. I was an only child who had been abandoned by her parents at the mere age of three. I grew up in the orphanage and then began working there after the age of eighteen. I was twenty-five now and couldn't remember ever even getting into an argument with someone. If the kidnapper had kidnapped me for my body, then he would've done what he wanted and left me for dead. But this kidnapper had kidnapped me, not laid a finger on me, and placed me onto a comfortable bed. Why? Nothing made sense to me.
It felt like hours had passed when suddenly I heard a door open. I kept my eyes closed but behind my closed eyelids I saw the brightening of the room. I was too frightened to open my eyes, so I closed them even tighter. I heard footsteps coming in my direction. I heard one step in my direction, then a second, a third, and then they stopped. I didn't move. I remained frozen on the ground with my eyes closed. There was silence for a moment when suddenly I heard the same angry, husky voice that I had heard when being dragged away.
"ADITYA, GET IN HERE."
A few seconds passed when I heard footsteps coming quickly into the room and then the voice I had heard outside my room earlier spoke.
"What is it br...oh my god, what happened?!"
"That's why I've called you here. What happened?"
"I don't know bro! She probably fell off the bed or something."
"I CAN SEE THAT. But you were supposed to watch her!"
"I was!"
"There's a difference between watching TV and watching a girl whom we kidnapped."
"Sorry bro."
"You better be. Now go get Neha and tell her to bring the first aid box. You know what to do. I'll be in my room, I'll talk to her later."
His cold yet raspy voice sent a chill down my spine. I'll talk to her later rang through my ears and caused my heart to race. I felt fear creeping over my body once again and then the lights went out. My eyes felt tired from being shut so tightly and so I decided to open them slowly. I saw darkness surrounding me again but I forced my eyes to stay open. My heart ran at full speed for a moment but eventually it slowed down. I felt as though I had no reason to fear these kidnappers because they had ordered for a first aid box for me. What kidnapper who means harm would do that? I felt a smile attempting to creep onto my face behind the tape as a feeling of relief overwhelmed me. I considered myself lucky for having been kidnapped by these guys rather than someone else. As I tried to smile, the lights suddenly flashed on. My eyes instantly closed, as the light was too bright for my eyes since I had been surrounded by darkness for so long. I slowly tried to open my eyes while adjusting to the lights above me. I heard lighter footsteps coming in my direction. When I felt a hand on my shoulder, my eyes shot open and I sat up with the help of my shoulder and elbows. I stared straight into the face of a middle-aged woman. She wore black and white and held a first aid box. I comprehended she was there to help me. After I took in her face, I realized my eyes were open and the lights were on. I looked around the room and saw blank navy blue walls with a white curtain to the left of the bed I had just been on earlier. The bed had white sheets and the door to the room was also white. To my surprise, the room was much bigger than I had ever seen in my life before. A big white dresser lined the wall across from the bed and I felt myself leaning against a bedside table. As I took in the room, I heard her quiet voice.
"Don't worry. You're okay dear. He won't hurt you."
A tear ran down my right eye and I shook my head at her. I wanted to ask her to help me but my mouth was taped shut. I gestured towards the door with my eyes, asking for help to run, but she looked behind herself confused. She looked back at me and I saw a question mark take place on her face. I continued to shake my head but she ignored me. She opened the first aid box and took out some wipes. I felt her wipe at my nose and then she pulled the wipe away. My eyes widened after seeing the amount of blood that covered the wipe. I froze, which probably made it easier for her to place a bandage over my nose. Once she was done, she closed the first aid box and I saw her walk out of the room. I heard her footsteps retreating when suddenly they came to a stop. I heard her speak.
"All done sir."
There was no response but I heard heavy footsteps getting louder and louder. I stared straight at the door as I leaned against the bedside table. My pulse sped up again as his steps got louder and I readied myself to see the face of the man who had kidnapped me. I hoped that it'd be someone I knew, just so I could get an explanation for why this was happening to me.
As I looked at the door, I saw a black, shiny shoe come in view in the doorway. The man wore dark black trousers. My eyes slowly moved up him and I saw a light blue-buttoned shirt, which fit his muscular build perfectly. The top button of his shirt was open and his arm sleeves were folded up to his elbows. His forearms showed how defined his muscles were and I could only image what was under his shirt. I noticed his body getting closer to me and then my eyes moved up to his face. His perfectly defined jawline made my heart stop. His smirk was so perfect, yet so wicked. His dark hair looked soft, but was tousled to look messy. Then our eyes met. His eyes...they were dark, emotionless...impossible to read, yet so captivating at the same time. But the only word they spoke to me was danger. And his husky, deep voice...
"RK's the name."
